Andy marte Released by Cleveland

Andy Marte at one time was a top pick in The Braves and Indians Minor league system. He was released yesterday as he was out of options. I am hoping that the Astros take a good look at him he is a 3rd baseman and he is only 25 years old. He hit .275 with 20 hr and 74 in 2005. Here is a look at his stats http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/M/andy-marte.shtml We have 2 old men at 3rd wouldnt it be nice to bring a former top prospect and see if we could get him to be our 3rd baseman of the future???

DFA

Marte was designated for assignment, not released. There’s a big difference between the two. If he was released any team could sign him as a free agent and not worrry about roster issues. The Indians have 9 days to trade him or, if he is unclaimed off waivers, designate him to their minor league system. They could end up releasing him but that won’t happen (and is unlikely) until the DFA process runs its course. If the Astros trade for him or make a waiver claim they have to keep him on the 25 man roster since he is out of options.

Interesting idea.

Marte was at one time Baseball America’s No. 6 prospect in baseball. I think it is unlikely that he will ever become as good as people expected. His OBP really dropped off the table, even at the minor league level, and that is a warning sign for a 25 year old, in term of a limited potential for developing into a ML starter. That’s not to say that he might not become a decent role player in the majors if he catches on with another team.

Total Zone indicates that he is a plus defensive player at 3d base. His major league defensive stats are mixed, but the sample size probably is too small to tell us much. If Marte is a good defensive third baseman, I wouldn’t mind if the Astros took a flyer on him.

The Astros would have a tough fit getting Marte onto the 25 man roster. Boone has a guaranteed contract and is unlikely to be jettisoned unless he drops dead. Marte would have to take a utility infielder slot, but he doesn’t really play a middle infield position.

charlie pallillo had a good take on this last night

if the Astros are going to give a marginal 3B prospect a chance we’ve already got Chris Johnson

yeah but Marte is a better overall prospect than Johnson!!!

...well... "was" a better overall prospect....

Marte hasn’t played like that kind of top prospect in a while.

"Was" is right!

If you want to aquire Marte, go play MVP baseball 2005. But I do think we should give Johnson a shot, have him plattoon with Boon at third, and Blum be our backup infielder.
