Tejada Charged - May have plea deal
Charged for lying to Congress over steroids. Indications that there may be a plea deal arranged.
WASHINGTON (AP)—All-Star shortstop Miguel Tejada has been charged with lying to Congress about steroids. Tejada is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday where he is expected to plead guilty.
The charges against Tejada, who currently plays for the Houston Astros, were outlined in documents filed in Washington federal court on Tuesday.
The documents indicate that a plea agreement has been reached with Tejada.
Messages left for his attorney, Mark Tuohey, were not immediately returned.
The documents were filed a day after superstar Alex Rodriguez admitted to past use of performance enhancing drugs.

Key Words - Plea agreement
Sounds like Tejada will stay in the country (and out of jail) to finish out his baseball career.

Replacement?
Who would replace him at SS if he has to serve jailtime?
Kaz to move over and Aaron Boone play 2nd?
Aaron Boone at SS?
Free Agent?
AAA Round Rock?
What do you guys think?
I suspect that the Astros would pick up a free agent infielder.
Wade has already said that he might do that, even before the Tejada charge. The Astros already knew that they were weak in terms of back ups at shortstop. There are a lot of second basemen left on the market, if the Astros were inclined to move Kaz to shortstop (probably risky). Hudson, Gruzelanek, Kennedy come to mind. Gruzelanek can play shortstop too, though I doubt he is starter material. Manzella and Sutton are potential minor leaguers.
I am guessing that Tejada will play this season, though. His attorney probably wouldn’t have agreed to a guilty plea at this point unless they believed that he would be allowed to play the season with the Astros.
More details
The charge doesn’t appear to be lying about using steroids himself, but rather lying about whether he knew about a former Oakland teammate’s use of steroids.
yes, he did not admit to conversations with Adam Piatt.
Piatt said Tejada complimented him on being in shape when spring training started, and that Piatt later told Tejada that he used steroids/HGH. Tejada told congressional investigators that he had never talked to any teammates who said that they used steroids.
honestly
that seems pretty weak. I’m glad that the government is spending money and time on this crap.
Yes..very weak..
I fail to get a heart full of righteous indignation over any of this.
..agonizing since 1983...
Differences in reactions among Chronicle columnists...
Justice says he forgives Tejada and will hug him when he sees Miguel in spring training.
McTaggert says the Astros should release Tejada and eat his salary.
JJ Ortiz talked to McLane by phone, and quotes McLane as saying that fans will probably forgive Tejada if he is forthright and honest in his apologies.
According to Ortiz, a press conference is scheduled for Tejada and his attorney in Houston tomorrow afternoon….after the morning appearance in federal court in D.C. That should be interesting.
To both raise animosity towards Cubs fans and brag
George Will both broke this news to me and heckled me about it today. It was demoralizing.
My opinion, at this point, is that Tejada is a small fish in this; and it appears that he wasn’t even under-oath. It’s probably necessary to make a scape-goat out of Bonds and Clemens, but the punishment for people like Tejada and A-Rod needs to be the fact that for the rest of their careers/lives, everyone will second guess their accomplishments. I’m sure A-Rod will be booed in every stadium all year long, if not longer. Tejada has managed to escape, for now, but clearly he has had his imaged shattered too. I think that’s the best deterrent possible—humiliation and loss of credibility.
The Crawfishboxes
A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.
I don’t know if I would say his image is shattered. He was already mentioned in the Mitchell Report. I don’t know that much about particulars of different players, but it doesn’t surprise me that he probably took some steroids. The difference between him and Arod is Miggy seems like a guy who loves playing baseball and he’s going to do it for a little while longer. Arod seems concerned with being considered one of the greatest players of all time and I’d guess the HR all time leader. The former will probably be a “coulda” and the latter, if he gets there, will be tainted.
