Duchscherer to return to the Athletics

Source.

Some of us had discussed the possibility of Justin Duchscherer becoming an Astro, so I thought this might be interesting to you guys.  The deal is reportedly incentive-based, for a maximum of $5.5 million.

I'm a fan of Norris and Paulino both getting rotation slots, so I wouldn't want to see us sign a starting pitcher unless it means Moehler goes to the bullpen.  But if the Astros were willing to put Moehler in the pen, this strikes me as a missed opportunity to shore up the rotation for a relatively low price.

Duchscherer also has experience pitching in the back end of the bullpen, so his flexibility might have been appealing in a number of mid-season scenarios.  Well, I guess it's too late now!

I suspect Duscherer's relationship with the A's organization...

gave them an advantage in signing him up. I know that several other teams were bidding for him. I have read that Duscherer appreciated the support/compassion that the A’s showed him during his bouts with mental health problems. And maybe this is best for him, since both he and the A’s are comfortable together.

Fair point, I figured that might be the case too, though one does wonder if a guaranteed $5 million (no incentives) would have swayed him.

Bummer

especially given his contract ($2M guaranteed + $3.5M in incentives) being so cheap. Oh well, here’s to Paulino busting out!
