An article concerning the relationship between Ks and Contact% which indicates Felipe and Bud may be in for pretty solid seasons in 2010.

Nice article. This bolsters what a lot of us have been saying about Paulino and Norris. The part I find slightly humorous is that the author seems to just recently have realized that contact% is inversely correllated with K%. I don’t think this relationship is as stunning a revelation as he thinks. Just like hitter contact rate is inversely correllated with K rate, the same is true of pitchers. Before fangraphs existed with its array of pitch data, I used to watch for pitcher rankings for swings and misses. (Swing and miss %, of course, is just the inverse way of saying contact rate.) I always figured that swing and miss rates, which are even better than you would expect from the K rate, are a good predictor for pitchers who might improve in the future. Wandy showed up early (when people thought he wasn’t very good) on swing and miss rankings. I recall when I thought Zeke Astacio would be a candidate to break out in 2006 because he outperformed on swings and misses; unfortunately that didn’t turn out to be a precursor for him.
