Jason Castro Scouting Report

John Klima over at Baseballbeginnings.com has put up a scouting report of Astros farmhand and top prospect Jason Castro after seeing him play 12 innings in the Arizona Fall League.

I won't poach his material since it's a quick read, but it's got some really positive stuff about the Astros' up-and-coming catcher.  I knew Castro was good defensively, but Klima is calling his defense plus-plus and says his D is better than 90% of the big league catchers he's seen recently, with a chance at being the best at his position once he makes it to the majors.  You rarely see guys hit scores of 75 on the 20-80 scouting scale, but Klima gave Castro a 75 for fielding ability.

I'm looking forward to the day when Jason Castro is a Full-Fledged Astro, but I hope they don't bring him up too quickly...don't want to Towles him.

I saw this scouting report last night and found it quite interesting. Its a good report and extremely positive and encouraging to us as fans. Previous scouting reports i’ve seen have said things like he is improving in areas like framing pitches, but never indicated as to where he was at, this gives better indication and i like where he is at currently. I’d prefer to see him in RR next year as opposed to giving him a shot at the major league level. I wouldn’t even get angry by him being sent back to CC to work with lyles and seaton if they are assigned there as well, also he can work on power some more to before getting to better pitching in RR.

I have to say that it was refreshing to make it through a discussion of an Astros prospect without the writer calling the farm system a disgrace or talking about how Drayton has meddled in baseball decisions.

It made me excited about the possibility of our up-the-middle D when Castro and Mier both crack the majors!

Nice report on the defense. I’m not sure how he could evaluate Castro’s offense from watching the AFL, since Castro hit below .100 in the AFL.

I assume he was dog tired by that point.

My hope is that his power will shoot up next season, after he has rested from the rigors he was put through. His power outage at Corpus Christi may have been as much from his own tired body in the second half of the year as it was leaving Lancaster.
