If we could get a deal similar to what Cleveland got for Cliff Lee...

Would you trade Roy-O? What would it take to make you think about it? There are a lot of big market teams who need an ace (or at this stage 'near ace') and may give major league ready arms. I have seen and heard that the Rangers have Brandon McCarthy possibly available as a part of a deal for an ace, and Nolan knows Roy very well, personally and professionally, so that is one of many possibilities. I'd love to see some reasonable scenarios and maybe inspire Uncle D.

No McCarthy

B-Mac is young and talented but hasn’t proven anything to this point. He is always hurt and can’t seem to get over the injury bug. I’ve had some interaction with him and of course he wants to be out there pitching and works his ass off to get back but IMO, its wasted space on your team until he can prove he can stay healthy

Not right now

Maybe at the trade deadline depending on the team’s outlook at that point, and if Roy has bounced back so we can get a better deal for him.

I agree that maybe at the trade deadline but

not not and maybe not ever. Honestly I wouldn’t be satisfied with the package the Indians got for giving up Lee but the problem is we won’t and don’t deserve a better package. Maybe fewer prospects but better prospects if we can but I want one major major prospect. That’s how I feel about an Oswalt trade but then again in regards to an Oswalt trade now I would be more prone to ask for less. It’s very likely that we aren’t going to be anything too special while Oswalt is still around or at least still around in ace form so why not get something for him while you can? If nothing else it’d at least be encouraging to see an Oswalt trade to know that Drayton is loosening his grip on being so against the WIN NOW strategy. As much as it pains me to say it if Oswalt goes I’d like to see Berkman traded also if he’d except a trade. It seems Lee is probably the least likely to go and it’d be fine with keeping one of the 3 but if you’re gonna trade one it’d be nice to see 2 go so our (non existent) rebuilding process is sped up quite a bit.

I don’t think Cleveland got enough in the Lee trade. It’s early, but so far that trade isn’t looking great for the Indians.

I would rather keep Oswalt.

I don’t buy into the idea that Oswalt is on some kind of severe decline. I would rather see him pitching in the Astros’ rotation. That’s not to say that I wouldn’t go for some kind of deal which blows us away. I agree with those who say that McCarthy isn’t enough. I might consider a pitcher of the caliber of Buchholz or Phi Hughes along with several other players.

I agree

I don’t by into the decline either as I’ve stated before pitchers age different than hitters, and Roy is one of those pitchers that can pitch for a long time if he so desires.

Problem is he’s been pretty firm for awhile now that he doesn’t want to keep pitching after the end of his current contract. Says he wants to retire. Maybe he’ll change his mind, but I wouldn’t count on it.

That’s part of what I’m scared of. If Roy is only going to pitch for like 2 more years(?) then I almost want a trade b/c sadly I don’t see us contending this or next year.

I think 2011 could be a big season so if they want to hold onto him it should be for that. I could see a lot of impact players coming up from the minors that year, because AA should be pretty special this season.

Andy Pettite

has been saying that for years.

If anything it’s leverage in negotiations, and do you really think Roy will quit after 2011 if the Stros put together a good team?

by timmy_ on Nov 10, 2009 11:13 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe. He doesn’t strike me as the type to bullshit (pardon the French) or make idle promises. Perhaps I’m wrong about him. I don’t know.

There’s also the issue of his back.

by OremLK on Nov 11, 2009 8:48 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Those aren’t necessarily reasons to trade him, IMO. Those factors would decrease his value from the perspective of other teams, reducing the liklihood of getting the huge trade return that would justify a trade. The Astros know him better, and staying with the Astros probably increases the liklihood he won’t retire. If the Astros think Oswalt’s back is manageable, based on their staff’s knowledge of him, they probably discount that risk more than other teams. I don’t have any idea whether Oswalt will retire at the end of his contract, but if anyone can talk him out of it, it’s probably Drayton McLane, who regards Oswalt almost as part of his family.

If the Stros don’t compete for the playoffs for the remainder of Roy O’s contract I could see him retiring.

perhaps a trade to the White Sox?

I know he’d love to pitch with Peavy. And the Sox have a bunch of talent coming through the system. Can you say Gordan Beckham?

by astro_boy on Nov 10, 2009 11:14 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think the White Sox have the budget to do it, even if all the other obstacles fell. Chicago added Peavy and Rijos who have significant multi-year contracts. The White Sox aren’t likely to trade Beckham, and they are depending on him at their starting 3d baseman.

by clack on Nov 11, 2009 2:53 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

True – Peavy and Rios decrease their payroll flexibility, however they bought out Dye’s contract ($12M). There were rumours, pre-Teahan, that they would go after Figgins which would have cost a pretty penny. That being said, I highly doubt that they would trade Beckham. He’s high on Kenny’s list and cheap to boot for the time being.

But imagine that rotation….

or the Red Sox

Still a lot of talent in their system. Buchholz, Bard, and perhaps the best of them all, Bowden.

All in all though, I just can’t see Oswalt in another uniform.
