Oakland A's dip into pool of 3d base minor league free agents
We have occasionally discussed the pool of minor league free agents who can play 3d base, since many of us question whether Chris Johnson is a good option. It turns out that the Oakland A's are also looking for 3d basemen among the Quad-A crew. The A's signed Dallas McPherson and said he would compete for the major league job. McPherson is one of the most frequently mentioned Quad-A 3d baseman because of his huge power potential.

3rd base
Hi guys. I have thought and thought about this 3rd baseman dilemma. IF the ‘Stros could afford him I like (FA) Hank Blaylock. I believe he still has a lot of upside. When he won the All-Star game a few years back, everyone thought he’d be reliable power source at 3B. I’m pretty sure he could handle first base in a pinch as well.
Thanks, Happy Holidays
I may have mentioned him previously too. If he is cheap enough, he might be worth a gamble. I think the ideal use would be a platoon with Keppinger, since his career stats indicate that he hits righthanders with an OPS more than 150 points higher than lefthanders. But at this point, Blalock is no sure thing. After injuries in recent years, Blalock has been on decline. Despite hitting 25 HRs last year, Blalock’s batting average was only .234 and his OBP was only .277. At this point, we don’t know if he will continue to decline or whether he will rebound as he puts his injuries behind him. I like the idea of signing him as a platoon player if he would agree to a salary in the $2 million range.
