Type A & B free agents named

Hawkins, Tejada and Valverde have been slated as Type A free agents.  You can check out the entire list at http://mlb.fanhouse.com/2009/11/09/free-agent-compensation-rankings-released/   This could be a big season to pick up some future draft picks!

Also of note - Brocail was included as a Type B free agent.

Seems like a pretty tame year overall for the free agent market (relative to last year anyways).  Let the Holliday sweepstakes begin.

As far as Astros go....

no big surprises. I think we expected Type A for Tejada, Hawkins, and Valverde.

Now the biggest question is who do you offer arbitration too?

If I were Wade I’d offer to Hawkins and Valverde b/c IMO we need Hawk back and if he doesn’t come back so be it at least we get a couple picks out of it and Valverde will definitely sign a big contract somewhere. Now do you offer to Tejada? I’m on the fence about keeping Tejada. Of course if you want to keep him then offer, but I might consider offering even if you’re not thrilled of him playing the hot corner. The biggest problem I see with that strategy though is that having to give up 2 picks might scare off teams from signing him and then you’re stuck with him. I think we need to try to get 4 picks out of these guys and if we can then that’d be amazing!

i just want picks

For valverde and hawkins…i dont think hawkins is really that good, and im not the biggest fan of valverde…i also would rather not keep tejada but it looks like we will which is not such a big deal…

yeah 4 picks or more and I’m happy and smiling. any fewer and I’m sad, disappointed and totally saw it coming. it wont be a synch to get 4 but it wont be terribly difficult either. although I’m saying that without knowing all the details, w/o knowing what each player really wants and so on. essentially I think 4 picks replenishes our system fully whereas I think we still have to wait to see how the 2009 draft does next year as well as how 2010 does down the road. with 6 picks in the first 2 rounds you’re almost guaranteed to hit a major prospect on at least one of those and the way hecks been picking them so far I like our chances of scoring plus prospects on no less than half of them. come on stros! please! if you do anything this offseason just get the picks!!! I can deal with drayton selling Oswalt for an ice cream cone if we get 6+ picks. ok thats a bit far but I want them BAD!
