Acta hired as Indians manager

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, Manny Acta is set to become the Indians' next manager.

The Indians did their due diligence, interviewing Angels bench coach Ron Roenicke, Dodgers hitting coach Don Mattingly and Bobby Valentine. But clearly they were most impressed by Acta, the former Nationals skipper. Source: Jon Heyman on Twitter

JdJO has details

It sounds like both the Astros and the Indians offered him a contract and that length of contract was an issue…Indians gave Acta a 3-year deal.

More thoughts on the manager search

AndyZipp over at spikesnstars, who usually has good inside info, said the following:

For what it’s worth, I’m hearing Mills made a hell of an impression. (Grain of salt here) McLane wanted Acta prior to the interviews, but Mills really gave them a lot to think about.

Now that the race to hire Acta is off, I wonder if they’ll slow things down a bit more and give a second chance to Mackanin (the Phils’ bench coach, who still has work to do this season) or any of the other guys who didn’t make the short list.

This quote from McLane is hard to interpret:

Astros owner Drayton McLane didn’t want to comment on Acta either Sunday.

"We got some more to go," he said. "Until we get that down. We’re just not going to make any comment. It would not be appropriate."

The “we got some more to go” could be interpreted as looking at additional candidates, or it could just mean that the decision process isn’t finished.

Yeah, I suppose I would take Mills over Garner.

I can’t blame a guy for taking the better deal.

I’m more upset at the organization, I can understand if Acta just outright chose the Indians, but this was a case of the Astros just not being competitive with their offer. The Astros for all their talk about wanting to fix the farm system and stay competitive, sure made a bonehead move here.

Sure we can give Carlos Lee a 6 year $100 million dollar contract, but when it comes to the manager let’s slap him in the face with a 2 year offer and an option year.

Carlos Beltran

Also said he wanted to play for a winning team, but chose the 2005 Mets to sign who had just gone 71-91 in 2004. Just cause a guy says he wants to play for your team doesn’t mean you can under pay the guy.

I kind of was split between him and Acta and will lose it if Garner is hired!
