Should the Astros consider Tim Redding?
Harry Pavlidis, of Beyond the Box Score and Cub/fx, breaks down SP FA Tim Redding and shows him to be extremely average, but worth about $4.5 million dollars in value and set to provide about 170 IP and 1 WAR. That's a lot better than Brandon Backe and Mike Hampton can be projected. At around $1 million for 2009, I think Mr. Pavlidis should get some percentage of Mr. Redding's contract because he makes Redding seem like a no brainer, no risk signing. If even if it's mediocre depth, it can't hurt to spend a million dollars to ensure that there is at least some level of competition to make our rotation at Spring Training.

My impression is that Redding won't be that cheap.
I could be wrong. But, judging from the number of teams which are after him, I am guessing he might cost $5 or $6 million. At that cost, I’m not too wild about him. But if Redding would sign for $1 million or so, I think he is worthwhile. Frankly, I’ve been surprised by Redding’s popularity among GMs. Maybe he fits a weak niche of mediocre starting pitchers who won’t cost $9 or $10 million. But he seems like the back up plan for a number of teams, like the Mets, Rockies, Orioles, Cardinals, and Brewers. The downside of Redding is that he won’t pitch deep into games, generally. He had that problem as a young Astro and he continues to follow that pattern. But he will usually keep you in the game while he pitches.

Need depth...
Signing him couldn’t hurt, especially if Petitte doesn’t sign here. The staff has no depth and our farm hands are not ready. Redding is no better than average, but he’s the best option we have.
