What's going on in Arlington?
Michael Young wants to be traded rather than be moved to third-base. Elvis Andrus is the heir apparent at short stop, but so far the veteran is reluctant to make another defensive switch. Astros fans have to be unfamiliar with this kind of situation on two fronts:
1) Knowing what it's like to have major league ready talent at the minor league level
2) Having a player ask/demand to be traded
Young is likely to stay put in Texas, given that he is owed $62 million over the next five years. FanGraphs had him worth $7.5 million last season.
For comparison's sake, based on the metrics used to determine real value, Miguel Tejada outpaced Young slightly at the plate and was dramatically better in the field in 2008.

I Think...
You need to take a look at Andrus’ minor league stats. Everything looks good until you get to the errors column, which is totally outrageous. Granted, Michael Young was undeserving of the Gold Glove last year, but Andrus is hardly a defensive improvement for a ball club that gives up a TON of runs.

Andrus
has much better range than Young who is mediocre at best, meaning he’s basically getting to balls Young can only dream of getting. That’s one part of why he made so many errors; the second one is that minor league fields cannot be compared to ML fields in terms of condition. I have a feeling that even the best ML shortstops would make errors on minor league fields.
The guys at LSB are more worried about what Andrus will produce with the stick (he only hit .270 in AA) rather than his glove.

Moving Young to 3d make sense from the Rangers' standpoint.
Young probably could become a superior defensive player at 3d base, which requires less range. Assuming that Andrus is as good a defensive player as the Rangers front office thinks, then moving Young to 3d would improve defense at two infield positions. Young may be over valuing himself if he thinks the Rangers can trade him. He just isn’t worth the contract.

It's like
moving Jeter to third and having A-Rod play SS when he arrived back in 04 for the Yankees would have made much more sense defensively.

you can't do that!
He’s Captain Clutch! Mr. Intangibles! HE’S A TRUE YANKEE! You can’t move him to any position he’d be remotely good at.
