Astro - iest Contest: The Championship

Well, this is it.  Jeff Bagwell facing off against Craig Biggio.  We did this a few weeks ago, but that was the question, who's your favorite Astro.  This time, it's who is the face of this ball club.  The person who best embodies what it means to be an Astro.  Is it that guy who tasted a lot of success, but fell just short (much like our beloved franchise) or the Guy who scrapped out every bit of talent he get from his body to achieve his goals (also much like our beloved franchise often does)?

I'm just gonna say it

I think that Jeff Bagwell’s career path, more so than Biggio’s, truly represent what it means to be an Astro.

A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

yeah,

me too. Bagwell’s career really fits the guys whom I really consider to be the embodiment of the organization: Dickie Thon, JR Richard, etc.

Biggio finally got recognized by the overall baseball community as one of the greatest second basemen of all time when he got to 3000 hits. If you asked the typical baseball writer who were the ten greatest second basemen, and Biggio’s name would come up more often than not.

But if you asked them to name the five greatest first basemen, Bagwell might not be as prevalent in the responses. The fact that he was so great and yet unable to get recognition of that greatness mirrors the franchise’s spectacular collections of talent over the years and its horrible luck.

Voted Biggio

I’ve written before I see Bagwell & Biggio as Batman and Robin, with Batman Bagwell & Biggio the boy wonder. I think Bagwell was the guiding spirit for the 90s. Bagwell is my favorite Astro.

Biggio had the spark for the unusually dramatic. Need a catcher -here I am – second base – no prob – center field – I’ll look goofy if the team needs me to pay there -left field – why not .

Want a positive interview strewn with appropriate cliche and a big boyish grin – get Biggio

While Bagwell was being embarrassed by his wife, Biggio was touting his Sunshine Kids.

While a shoulder injury made it painful for fans to watch Bagwell throw, Biggio saved a five hit night for THE night.

Bagwell moved away from Houston when he retired, Biggio became a high school coach in town and still makes frequent appearances at the Minute Maid

Bagwell leaves the Astros sullied a little by the bad vibes surrounding the club’s attempts to collect insurance money for his injury whereas the fans would have carried Biggio out on their shoulders if they could..

The better player and the most important to the Astros: Jeff Bagwell.
The Astroiest : Craig Biggio .

I like the way you laid that out

I guess I just can really sympathize with Bagwell on the athlete forced out of his sport by an injury—not by his own choosing.

I guess I always try to block out the negatives with Baggie, especially the insurance money. That was really just bad.

Biggio seemed to have a way of coming through in big moments.

At least, that’s the way it seems from memory. I recall in the late 90’s, when he was in his prime, he had some walk off HRs in the 9th to win games at important points in the season. In more recent years, I think about his winning hit against Billy Wagner in Philadelphia in 2005 which cemented the Asttros WC lead. Sometimes those memories are defied by the stats…so I looked at his WPA/LI at fangraphs. He only had four negative seasons out of 19, two in his first three years in the MLB and his last two seasons. So that seems to confirm my impression.
