Five games out. A 2.74% shot at stealing the Wild Card away from Milwaukee. (Source: Baseball Prospectus). Raise your hand or tap your mouse here if you thought that would be the case a month ago. We're playing with house money folks. Simple as that. Nobody- not the naysayers, the homers, the stat heads or the casual fan seriously thought the Astros would be this position. My take is simple: enjoy it. Revel in it. We've got a nice schedule to close out the season. The Brewers have three series against the Cubs (twice) and Phillies. Yeeesh. It'd be one thing to have been in the hunt all year, and then miss out on a spot in the last week. It's another to have been out of it, then to gradually become relevant through some luck, but also through outstanding play. Randy Wolf pitches tonight, and I'm still all warm and tingly from that start he made in Chicago. Mark Saccamano went all Roy Hobbs on us last night, hitting a tater to right field in his first AB at home since being called up from AAA Round Rock. Signing the Darin Erstad's of the world may not have the brightest financial move, but you could justify him being on a contending club. Another strong hand to steady the ship. Pieces are falling into place. What's more with the success of Chris Johnson, Alberto Arias making good on his first start as an Astros, and the solid early returns on our youngest members of the farm system, there seems to be a decent foundation in place for the future. Whodathunkit? Ed Wade, I doft my cap in your direction, and ready myself to watch the club you assembled hopefully take down a former Yankee tonight.

Sorry

Whoever it was that pointed out that Randy Wolf, and not Roy Oswalt was pitching tonight- thank you. I couldn’t remove the Roy O widget, so I just decided to create a new game thread. Root, root, root for the Red Legs too.

Sorta funny

This is an excerpt from a Hardball Times article, giving each of the 30 MLB teams a song to describe their season:

Houston Astros: “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” by the Beach Boys. Wouldn’t it be something if their late-season charge could amount to something for them? On July 11, the Nationals beat them by 10 runs, causing the last place Astros to fall to 42-51 on the year. Since then they’ve kept rising up. Despite playing brilliantly lately, they are still stuck in fourth place, with apparently little chance to play in October. Their streak will likely mean nothing . . . but wouldn’t it be nice for them if either the Brewers and/or Cubs collapsed allowing Houston a shocking wild card?

Doumit's eyes

Creepy. Looks like he has no soul.

by Evan Hochschild on Sep 9, 2008 7:13 PM CDT reply actions

I tried to post this on the last thread.. i guess I'll post it here.

I check the match ups for relevant games tonight and we have pretty favorable match-ups for most games.

The Marlins are throwing a good rookie up against the Phils tonight with a 3.32 ERA while the Phils have Kyle Kendrick who has an ERA above 5 on the season and a 9+ ERA in his last 5 starts. As you can see from the score Joe just posted (on the old thread.. the score is 7-1 Marlins) , that ERA has probably gone up quite a bit. Advantage: Marlins (I thought this before the game started, but it’s pretty clear now.)

For the Reds and Brewers game, the Reds are using a rookie pitcher themselves. He’s pitched only 10 innings this year and has an ERA of 2.70 with 10 strike outs. This was against the Pirates and Giants however. A better team might be able to do some damage against him. As for the Brewers, they are going with Jeff Suppan. He’s been OK, but he had a good August. Fortunately for us, he can be lit up (we did with 8 runs on July 27th) and his last start wasn’t that great, giving up 4 earned runs in 5.1 innings against a weak team: the Padres. Advantage: Brewers (slightly – let’s hope the rookie surprises us.)

The Cubs and Cards are going with Ryan Dempster and Kyle Lohse. I’m sure you all know these two guys so I won’t go into details, but they have both been good recently. I’m going to give the advantage (another slight one) to the Cubs on this one.

And finally, the game we are all watching. Wolf vs. Olhendorf at Minute Maid Park. Wolf has been pretty good since joining the team, so we should expect another good performance out him tonight, especially against the Pirates. Olhendorf was acquired in the Nady trade from the Yankees and he pitched two innings against us this year, giving up one run. He is making his second Major League start tonight and sports a 6.26 ERA, so we should have an opportunity to run away with the game early. Advantage: Astros (by a large margin)

So we are looking at something like:
Marlins over Phillies
Brewers over Reds
Cubs over Cards
Astros over Pirates.

5 games back from the Wild Card and 3rd in the Central by the end of the night with our Wild Card elimination number dropping to 13.

That’s my prediction.

I’m confident Wolf can keep them in check though.

At the time I was driving on an errand and listening to the radio guys...

Milo was ranting about the bad defense tonight and last night. The other guy implied that one of the runs wouldn’t have scored if Pence had hustled more. He said Doumit would have stopped at 3d but he looked at RF and saw that Pence was taking his time. I didn’t see it…just heard the radio guys.

not so much that pence was slow

but the ball really died in the corner and once he got to it, he dropped it. even if he plays it perfectly i’m not sure they make the play.

by lnewcomer on Sep 9, 2008 7:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Q's throw however

was stupid. it looked like he intended to throw to third, but saw the runner was not far off 2nd and changed his mind mid throw. either that or he was trying to fake the runner and ended up air mailing it to center

Over the Phillies.
We won’t be losing any ground to them tonight.

The Cubs are jumping on Lohse early.

3 consecutive hits and now a 2-0 lead in the first.

Now, hit a bomb, Berkman.

In the 1st against the Brewers.
Brewers managed to score 1, though.
1-0 Brew Crew

Berkman is out of his slump

We saw him come out of it last night. He confirmed he is back with that much needed 3 run homerun in the first to erase that ugly Pirates lead.

And Tejada hit !

Mets Phillies and Cardinals trail in their respective games. Brewers lead the Reds but it’s not the ninth inning yet.

i’m w/ jd, how did the other umps overrrule the home plate ump?

by lnewcomer on Sep 9, 2008 7:45 PM CDT reply actions

Foul pop caught by catcher

Question was did ball hit the roof and thus out of play or not in which case Newhan was out . Home plate umpire initially said ball hit something . After conferring with other umpires he called Newhan out.

but gets caught stealing for the 2nd out.
I’m sure “caught stealing” was just the scorer being generous. He probably just got tired of standing up next to first and lay down for a nap. :p

by lnewcomer on Sep 9, 2008 8:53 PM CDT reply actions

yeah, not one of his finer moments...

he started off with a mistake about Cincy’s ramon ramirez, a rookie. bill brown said he was with the Rockies earlier this year, and JD said I think that is someone else. bill said, “well that is such a common name, kind of like John Smith…then went off comparing it to "Abu” in the arab world, and from there started talking about terorists.

i’m not offended, but it’s probably something that on further review he should have left unsaid.

i think it was a rushed decision, driven by a couple bad calls in NY.

baseball has always had the human element and i’m happy to settle for that. it’ll only get expanded to more and more stuff over time.

by lnewcomer on Sep 9, 2008 9:10 PM CDT reply actions

I'm not impressed with the practice of tossing opposing HR balls back on the field.

It seems like we are just copying the Cubs’ fans. And who wants to copy them?

by clack on Sep 9, 2008 9:18 PM CDT reply actions

Randy Wolf leaves after 7 innings

After a poor start giving up 2 runs on 2 hits in the first inning, he pitched a one-hitter the rest of his stay (the one hit being a homerun). He deserves a win tonight, and a pat on the back.

Oh well.. still only half a game up...

Cubs in a free fall. They are lucky the Brewers are too.

Meanwhile.. in the more important game, an error by Weeks leads to a bases loaded, 1 out situation for the Reds. and the Reds hitter is immediately 2-0.

but only the lead runner matters since they are playing in St. Louis. I thnk the chances of the Cards scoring may have gone down with that walk. Wouldn’t you think?

In both '04 and '05

we had the wild card lead my September 10th. Believe it or not, this would be the best of our runs. It feels different though? Maybe it’s because we’re doing it with a bunch of new guys.

Erstad, Wiggy, Wolf, Blum, Newhan, Valverde.

indeed

I don’t remember the exact date, but I was definitely there on the Sunday afternoon home game against Colorado when we clinched the WC. I hope we can put ourselves in a similar position this year.

by Evan Hochschild on Sep 10, 2008 8:11 AM CDT up reply actions

interesting to see how fast that 2004 team made up ground...

On Sept. 22, the Astros were 3 games behind the Cubs for the WC lead. The Astros took their first lead only one week later, Sept. 29, with a 1/2 game lead over the Cubs. They made up 3.5 games in 1 week.
