Dick Justice is a Moron (Part 307,212,081)
I don't really feel like re-typing this, so I'm just going to copy and paste from my blog:
From Justice's blog:
They ranked in the top five in OPS in just two positions--first baseman and left field. They were in the top five in OBP in the same two positions. They were near the bottom of the NL in production in center field, third base and catcher.
Wade's first difficult question will concern Ty Wigginton and Michael Bourn.
Bourn I can understand - he's been absolutely awful this year and might lose his roster spot to Bogusevic sometime next season. But Wiggy's been nails all season long. Even before he had that ridiculous August, the guy was 3rd in OBP on the team.
Here's why we've gotten so little production from 3rd - Coop doesn't play Wiggy every day. He's played the last month in left, and even before then, Coop felt compelled to give Blum or Loretta playing time at third. Wigginton is not why the Astros had poor production at the left corner. He's why it's not completely dreadful.
Here's the thing: Wiggy has only had 419 PA's this year. That's the lowest he has had since he was called up in 2002. The guy is good. He can play. Just put him in, dammit!
So what do ya'll think? Am I wrong here? Was Wigginton's season a fluke? Is he to blame for third-base's low production?

Disagreement, and Agreement
Agree- I agree Wiggi has done amazing this year
Disagree- Bourn has done terrible, yes he hasn’t done good at hitting. But Defense he is great, we need someone who can cover that CF out there at Minute Maid. We can afford to have someone hitting .220 we don’t need everyone hitting .300
Wigginton
I assume what Richard Justice means is Wigginton is great trade bait. Realistically the best the Astros can lose. But he has a larger than average salary for 2009. Will the team benefit by trading him for another player or great prospects more than what they lose. A big part of that calcuation depends on eh production of Wigginton’s replacement at third – Blum has done well this month. Will Loretta be back. is Newhan a possibility ? Or a minor leaguer? Or a free agent?
I’m guessing management will like to have both Bourn and Erstad back next year.

I would consider trading Wigginton.
I have my doubts that he can be this good next year. Yes, there is a chance that he can, but I also think Wiggy may fit the “sell high” description. The Astros should have sold high on Ensberg after 2005 (yeah, hindsight is 20-20), and that makes me feel that you would at least consider trading Wigginton if you could get a lot in return.
I think Wigginton
can be this good next season.. I mean, he raised his career numbers some… but it’s not like he had an off the charts season…
Go 'Stros!
Wiggy's OPS is almost 100 points higher...
than his career average OPS. Maybe not an off the charts season, but a pretty good chance it is a career year.
Unfortunately it
was only a 2/3 of a year :(
Had he been healthy(and played more), he could have broken 30 home runs…
Go 'Stros!
no telling what he might have done if his late season injury...
hadn’t occurred. He was one of the hottest hitters in baseball at the time.
I like Wiggy
But I miss HUFF more :) haha

Honestly
I really really liked Huff when he was with Houston, when he was average, loved to see him muscle up and hit one.

I had no issues with Huff
I wasn’t sad to see him go… but not happy to see him go either… kind of indifferent.

From my understanding of it,
Wiggy only had a one year contract with us this season. So we can’t trade him, unless you want to do the whole sign-and-trade thing.
And I don’t think we have anyone who can match his production in the farm system. And his PECOTA projections look pretty good for next year. I’d sign him for two seasons, maybe three if you can get it cheap enough.
I mean, if the Astros are really in “win now” mode, then we should keep him unless we can get something better. And I think any money that could be spent at 3B would be better spent in pitching or at catcher.
I may be wrong, but I think he is still arb-eligible.
If that is the case, he can be traded because he is still under team control. I think he is still under team control, but if he isn’t, that would make his future with the Astros more problematic, since he could demand a lot more money than if he is arb-eligible.
2009 - Arbitration eligible
2010 – Free agent
