Wolf and Astros Mangle the Red: Day by Day, the Astros NL Wild Card Odds (9/25/08)

Wolf was filthy last night, Lance hit a two-run jack, and Hunter Pence walked in a run (think about that last one for a minute, you read it right).  It was a crazy night, but one that had all the right karma going for it.  The Cubs would end up stealing the game from the Mets after a back and forth affair in extra innings -- Luis Ayala for Astros MVP?  The Brewers won, but in the end that doesn't really change the challenge ahead for the Astros.  The point is, we're still alive in the Wild Card standings, meaning we have at least one more day of hope and drama from the 2008 Astros.

Let's check the standings:

National League Wild Card Standings

Milwaukee 87 71 .550 0 Won 3
New York 87 71 .550 0 Lost 1
Houston 83 74 .528 3.5 Won 1

Five possible left for us, four for our rivals.  Today begins a stretch in which they where they just need to forget how to win baseball games in the worst way.  Otherwise, all our efforts will be for naught.

They got better, but they're still not good.  Let's not dwell too long on those.  Instead, let's see who need to root against tonight:

Next Game

Chicago Cubs
@ New York Mets

Thursday, Sep 25, 2008, 6:10 PM CDT
Shea Stadium

Rich Harden vs Pedro Martinez

Mostly cloudy with a 70-percent chance of rain. Winds blowing in from center field at 20-30 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 65.

Let's be honest for second with this one.  Pedro always been overrated...alright, I lied, he used to be the best thing since sliced bread, but not anymore.  Hopefully we can spell implosion M-E-T-R-O-P-O-L-I-T-A-N when all is said in done on Sunday.

Next Game

Pittsburgh Pirates
@ Milwaukee Brewers

Thursday, Sep 25, 2008, 7:05 PM CDT
Miller Park

Zach Duke vs TBA

Clear. Winds blowing from left to right field at 5-10 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 70.

This match-up is Zach Duke vs. Yovanni Gallardo.  I held onto YoGa in my fantasy keeper league all year because I think he's that good, but I don't think he's good enough to pitch effectively/deep in tonight's game (coming back from a torn ACL).  Hopefully Duke can just not suck too much.

I think

the very fact that Hunter Pence didn’t come to the plate with his usual “grip-it-and-rip-it” mentality is a great omen. Both for him and for the Astros’ chances.

Hell, the night before, Tejada walked. Incredible.

I know...

The next thing you know, Tejada, Pence, and Bourn will lead the lead in OBP at this rate.

A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

D-Backs Gone.

Elimnated, history.

And if Roy can bring us home tonight, we’ll be alive for the final weekend.

Alright, time to deport Bourn.
