Houston Astros at Pittsburgh Pirates, 12:35 PM CDT
Houston Astros at Pittsburgh Pirates, Sep 21, 2008 12:35 PM CDT
Tough loss last night as Brian Moehler made it through 2 innings, allowing 5 runs to pretty much close the door on any chance the Astros had to winning last night. The Astros have now lost 6 of their last 7 games and watched any chance they had of making the Wild Card all but vanish.
Berkman is making no excuses for their current position.
Berkman pointed out that poor play earlier this year is as much to blame as their losing stretch now. The Astros' longest losing streak was eight, June 11-19, and they've had a bunch of other shorter stretches that were still just as damaging standings-wise.
"That's the reason why you play 162 games, to sort out who has the best team over the long haul, not who plays the best for a month and a half," Berkman said. "It's who plays the best for six months, and we've had not only this rough spot, but others that have cost us.
"People want to focus on this right now, which they should, because that's where we are in the season. But you forget about stretches in the past that have hurt us. That's why if you play a little better in the beginning or middle parts of the season, you don't have a mad scramble and have to win every single game you play at the end of the season to have a chance to make the playoffs."
A win today gives the Astros a .500 record against the Pirates this season... sad really.

Bourn
Attempting to steal multiple times during the Loretta/Tejada at bats… all foul balls.. he must have went 5-6 times

Nice play by Hunter
Sanchez didn’t think it would be caught and was standing on 3rd base when Pence doubled him off at 1st

Not watching this game. Watching the Texans game,
But didn’t that almost happen with Sanchez last night? He ran from 2nd to 3rd, fell down, and ran back to 2nd to avoid getting doubled off.
Well, my stream cut out about the middle of the 2nd quarter, when it was 14-6
but the run defense just looks awful. And Schaub seriously needs to calm down in the pocket – he’s throwing too early and missing receivers.
Steve Slaton is surprisingly good.
So if it’s 14-12, Brown probably missed the extra point.
Kinda
he’s even displaying “crap I don’t wanna get hit while making a read, so I’ll just throw to Johnson” syndrome.
beauuutiful ballpark
terrible team

Doubles off the wall in DEEP center field… misplayed by the CF’er, but I’ll take the double anyways.

Why was he taken out?
He’s not hurt, is he?
Christ, that would just be a great ending to this day for Houston sports.

You know,
if we hadn’t been swept by the Pirates a few months ago, we’d still be in this thing. If we hadn’t been swept by the Orioles, we’d probably be leading the WC race.
It’s like Lance said, there’s a reason they play 162 games, and if you win in March, April, May, June, and July, you don’t have to have a frantic race to the playoffs. You can afford to lose a few.
You know,
If a frog had wings he wouldn’t bump his butt when he hops either :)
I know man, it’s frustrating… You look back on the season and say…
If only we hadn’t gotten swept against the Pirates; if only we didn’t give Michael Bourn the leadoff spot for the first 1/3 of the season etc… Just think.. if we only won 1 more game each month, teams would be chasing us for the Wild Card.
Go 'Stros!
When you think about in those terms (one extra game per month)
it really makes you wonder what would have happened had Roy been healthy all season.
Or if Coop didn’t throw away outs on the bases in the first half. Or if we had batted Kazuo and Wiggy leadoff. Or if Carlos hadn’t been injured and we were forced to replace him with Blum.
It is frustrating. But this offseason should be interesting, at least.

If you had told me
in June that the Astros would finish with a winning record, I’d have called you a liar.
Too bad it’s not going to be enough. Whatever.
It's enough
to make things interesting right to the end. It never feels like it was good enough unless there’s a World Series win, but we have it an awful lot better than fans of the, say, Pirates.
Or Rangers.
Though I’ve never actually met a Ranger fan in person.
Or Orioles fans.
Or Padres.
Or Nats.
Or Jays.
Or Reds.
Yeah, there are plenty of fan bases worse off than ours.
I consider myself
a Rangers fan. We happened to have them on TV in Austin on a somewhat regular basis when I “discovered” major league ball. That was 1996, when they won the division, and did so for another couple years. But they always lost to the Yankees in the first round (in fact, I think they won Game 1 of that first series, and then lost the next 9 divisional games against the Yanks).
I must not be as much of a Rangers fan as an Astros fan (I’ve never posted on, or really even read, Lone Star Ball), but I should not have to choose until they meet in the World Series. That’s one reason that baseball is dead to me when they play exhibition games that count in the standings, also known as “Interleague Play”.
