Astros VS Pirates, game 2 of a 3 game series. With the win last night, the Astros moved into a even season series with the Pirates at 7-7. If you wanted, you could at least attempt to make a case that the Astros can blame their current position(4.5 games back in the Wild Card) on the Pirates... there is no reason the Astros should be anything less than 8-6(.584 win %[rounded up]) against the Pirate this season... I got this record by seeing what the rest of the league has done against the Pirates. That being said, the Astros were a pathetic team for a good part of the pre-All Star break season and that is why they found themselves in a hold against the Pirates. That hole is gone and now the Astros look to win the season series against the Pirates by winning their last 2 games of the season series.

Earlier in the season many people were making a case that if the Astros could just overtake the Cardinals and finish in 3rd place in the National League Central for the season, they would be happy... well, the Astros screamed past the Cardinals and currently sit in 3rd place behind the Brewers and Cubs... unfortunately the 5 game slump we just endured allowed the Cardinals to get back in the 3rd place race... let's not let them pass us.

2008 - Jimmy Barthmaier 0-1 1 1 0 0 0 0 2.1 7 7 7 2 2 2 27.00 3.86

Not a very intriguing pitching matchup tonight as Brian Moehler takes on Jimmy Barthmaier and his 27 ERA. Okay, he's only pitched 2.1 innings in his big league career, but it's still fun to throw out outrageous numbers to make the other team seem inferior.

No mention

of the fact that Barthmeier is a former Astros prospect. He seemed to peeter out towards the end of his tenure, but there was a time when he was a prize prospect. I"m not even sure the circumstances that led to him becoming a Pirate. Maybe somebody else can chime in with that.

I knew I remembered his name from somewhere

I just couldn’t figure out why(didn’t try real hard)

In a Top 100 Prospects list in 2006

He was the 7th best minor league prospect !! Number 8 was Troy Tulowitzki

Pirates claimed him off waivers

Astros left him off 40 man roster

It was a very odd move.

He had been trumpted as a top pitching prospect in AA prior to the 2007 season, but he had an injury or something, and then pitched poorly in the Arizona Fall League if I recall. It was a very surprising move when he was left off the 40 man roster in late 2007, allowing him to be picked up off waivers by the Pirates. If anyone wanted to go through archived fanposts, I wrote one on this move.

I have heard rumors that the Astros had concerns about his maturity or off-field stuff…maybe even that they made an example of him.

On radio

they said Barthmeier went to the Pirates in an “administrative” move. I’m not sure what that means. I ws hoping soeimone knew mor ea bout hmi.

The radio guys also said orignally he was nat a September call-up but was called up (called from his home after his season had ended) because of a recent injury to a Pirates pitcher.

It all adds up to a short outing by Barthmeier (excpet he’s an Ex-Astros farmhand who may have that extra for the Astros)

Barthmeier also has

the Astros ability to make a terrible pitcher look like Cy Young. Not saying Barthmeier is a terrible pitcher… but he is very inexperienced on the major league level

Gonna split my attention between this and the Texas game, which is about to kick off.

i'll buy the explanation

from JD. late break due to the guy on 3rd and not wanted to get sucked in by the fake to third, look to first move, and hoping for contact or ball 4 from Lance. not really a straight steal.

5-0 on a sac fly

Hunter Pence make a great running catch to keep that from being a double or triple. Brain Moehler is having maybe his worst start of the season.

The Pirates are making the Astros look like the A’s in this series.

last night Pirates broadcasters talked of the Pirates walks

Pirates pitchers have walked almost 200 more batters than the Astros pitchers and like 300 more than Arizona.

Match the following events with either Cubs fans or Pirates fans:

1. Collect and donate money to help in Hurricane Ike relief efforts

2. Boo and harass Astros players while belittling Hurricane Ike effects

mere coincidence

I wrote my comments before I read yours. We independently used the word “erase” – me on the error , you on the baserunner who got on because of the error. But it is weird we both used a word infrequenlty used here. I guess that’s caused by both of us having small vocabularies.

JD Suggests resting Berkman tomorrow...

No! Don’t do it!

From BR Bullpen:

“Berkman shares with Lou Gehrig the obscure record for the most consecutive years hitting a home run on the same date. He has hit a home run on each 21 September from 2001 to 2007. Gehrig set the record on 8 June 1938.”

If he hits a homer tomorrow, it will cement the legend of Lance Berkman.
