Astros Roster Moves

The Astros originally said they would wait until Tuesday to promote their September callups, but they got the ball rolling early when they summoned right-handers Jack Cassel and Fernando Nieve from Triple-A Round Rock Monday. Both pitchers were in uniform for the Astros' series opener at Wrigley Field.

After the game started, the Astros announced three additional callups who will join the team Tuesday in Chicago: right-hander Alberto Arias, catcher J.R. Towles and infielder Edwin Maysonet. Arias and Towles were already on the 40-man roster, and Maysonet's contract was purchased from Round Rock prior to adding him to the roster

Prior to Tuesday's game at Wrigley Field, the Astros activated second baseman Kazuo Matsui from the 15-day disabled list and outrighted right-hander Runelvys Hernandez to Triple-A Round Rock.

No real comments... I wouldn't expect to see much of any of these players (besides Kaz) unless the Astros lose a couple of games.

Most of the call ups aren't surprising....

I would like to have seen Saccamona called up to the majors for the first time. He is too old to be a prospect, but he has shown that he can kill AAA pitching and deliver RBIs. (He hasn’t shown that can play ML defense at 3d base though.) When you have the roster space, why not give him a shot, both as a reward and to see what happens. It’s not far fetched to think that he could become a pinch hitter in the majors. His numbers: 27 HRs, .298, .340, .523. http://firstinning.com/players/Mark-Saccomanno-a/
I really want to see how Arias pitches after his call up. The guy is only 24, has extreme groundball numbers, and put up an ERA below 2 for Round Rock after he was picked off the waiver wire from Colorado. Arias has also pitched well at the ML level for Colorado. He pitched well in a short stint this season for Colorado. You have to guess that the Rockies probably didn’t want to lose him on waivers.
