Starting pitching. Carlos Lee's injury. Hunter Pence and his sophomore slump. Michael Bourn struggling to be the offensive equivalent of Adam Everett. Miguel Tejada playing like he's 44 and not 34. We STILL don't have a catcher.

Ty Wigginton leading the majors in HR's in August, and slugging .806 in the process. Roy Oswalt allowing only 5 HR in his past 88.3 innings pitched, below his career .7 HR/9 innings rate. (Source: Baseball Prospectus). Jose Valverde taking the NL lead in saves. Hunter Pence hits his 20th HR, records his team leading 15th OF assist. LaTroy Hawkins hasn't given up a run since his trade here.

All of the aforementioned story-lines are true. The positives, the negatives, the silver linings and the nagging doubts. Still. The team is a very respectable 72-66 and are playing their best baseball of the year, including their very good stretch of ball in mid to late May. A major roadblock seems to be in their way tonight, as Stros killer Carlos Zambrano takes the mound. Coop is fond of saying it's a different guy every game that steps up for this club. It may need to be several different guys if we're gonna push past Big Z. Does anyone doubt that it can't happen?

Zambrano has been tough tough tough

on the Astros, as a pitcher and a batter. It’ll be tough game to win. ESPN says Cubs 2-1 favorites. But It’s tied ten minutes before game time. I’m hoping for the win

Great defensive play by Tejada. And he made another good play earlier.

Cubs’ announcers are marveling at his strong arm and good range. On defense Tejada has been playing like he was 25 years old.

Cubs score 2 runs quickly on HRs....

Brenly has been making a point during the game that Cubs think that Backe will give them good pitches on the first pitch and they have a strategy of hackng on the first pitch. Brenly said that the BA against Backe on the first pitch is something like .450. The first HR of the inning was on the first pitch….I didn’t see the Soto HR, so I don’t know about it.

Now Backe seems to be getting hit hard on subsequent pitches too.

GREAT Game

I couldn’t bring myself to talk to anyone during the closing innings (much less interact with my computer), but that was incredible.

A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.
