Astros @ Cubs: Stymie the Bleeding
Chicago Cubs at Houston Astros, Sep 15, 2008 1:05 PM CDT
I'm not even going to dignify the fact that I purposefully inverted the Home and Away teams with a snide remark -- although this may have served as one.
Well, it wasn't until I just posted that widget that I became aware of the fact that the Cubs were slotting Lilly in today instead of Marquis. The only thing I can say about that is **expletive deleted**
Moehler was solid in his last outing, which inspires a modicum of confidence, but the analytical side of brian tells me not to put too much faith in him given the circumstances. Lilly has been on or off all year. In his last outing against the Astros he was on, but he most recently was shelled by the likes of Cincinati two starts ago. It would be nice to get Wigginton back in the line-up against the lefty, but Abercrombie is OPSing over 1.000 against lefties, so let's hope our righties mash Lilly.

Too pissed about yesterday's joke of a no-hitter!!!
I will go crazy if we don’t shove it down their throats today.
Who gave Abercrombie a .313 batting average?
That’s almost as much of a joke as Zambrano’s no hitter.
He had a 3-hit game the other day

To explicate that
It just that the Astros were way over aggressive. Hopefully Lance changes the tempo for our offense.

Hey now
Dropping 2 (assuming we go on to drop 2) is by no means the end of the run. We still should be able to do well at Florida and Pittsburgh, and the Brewers and Mets are still imploding.
I wouldn't say the Mets are imploding.
They are 6-4 in their last 10. The Phillies could overtake them, but the Astros still have a worse record than 3 possible wild card teams right now. After being humiliated with possibly back to back no hitters and getting screwed by MLB, how well do you think the team is going to play? The team’s morale has to be in the shitter.

No Morale.
After getting fucked from every direction by MLB and mother nature (and now the scorer).. every out makes it worse. Battles cannot be won without morale. That’s why in historic military battles in which the human element played an important part, it was important for leaders to keep their troops morale up. At this point, only luck or something outside the ballpark (something good happening at home, for example) can help them.

We can only hope that they will be able to pick up the pieces
against the Marlins. And maybe power will be restored to the Houston area so they are isolated from their friends and family and things might start looking up for them.
I think that's likely
The situation in Houston shouldn’t do anything but improve, and fast.
And since these two games were such ridiculous blowouts, it should make it easier than otherwise to write them off as flukes, a result of the perfect storm of Ike and Bud, and then get back to playing Astros baseball.
And
isn’t Roy O slated to start tomorrow against Florida? That should be a pretty good way to right the ship.
The Marlins are hot right now though.
They could be tough to beat.

It is interesting .
It’s not really the Cubs fault (except for the Cubs fans moronic statements teh past few days).
But the Astros cannot do anything about Bud Selig . The only thing the Astros can do is take it out on the team most closely associated with this ourtrage and who benefitted the most from it (and the Cubs may not benefit as much as the Brewers, Phillies and Mets; but they are the visible object of revenge! )

Really the No-No should not count.
I mean its not like Carlos Zambrano pitched a good game or anything. Come on guys you are absolutely ridiculous with this whole denial thing.
Zambrano pitched a no hitter against, regardless of the circumstances its impressive.
So every time a team is dealt a bad hand and loses (no matter how that loss comes) the result should be simply disregarded because there are some bad circumstances involved in the game. If Drayton would have simply would have let the game be played in Seattle or LA, but because he didnt: Oh no, the No-no is a farce, put an asterisk next the no hitter.
The Astros are not as good as they have played the last month (as there negative run differential indicates) and to say that this would not have happened otherwise is a true farce. It would have been harder to do at Houston, but the cubs are a clearly superior team and it is very possible for Z to do this to that lineup.
Im going to preempt your response first of all no run differential isnt a lie, your just mad because it doesnt support your team. If your team had a great run differential you would be trotting out that stat too. And no you cant use the D-backs last year as a reason why run differential is a bad stat. The D-backs are only 1 of 2 teams to make the playoffs with run differential. Think about that: in over a hundred years of baseball only 2 teams EVER have overcome a negative run differential to make the playoffs. An imperfect stat it is, but it is quite accurate.
And 2 the Cubs are the superior team by any objective measure so dont try to say otherwise with random anecdotal junk.
Anyways end of rant: Ill probably be banned after this, but Im right
Madlarkin
ACB
it's ridiculous to call these "bad circumstances"
I don’t really blame the Cubs for anything in these situations. It’s MLB that screwed us. That doesn’t mean that plenty of Cubs fans aren’t colossal jackasses. Read the last game thread for the “McLane was greedy stuff”.
like a club that had a bad call go against them or had a player get hurt.
I doubt anyone here would seriously argue that the Astros aren’t playing over their heads so your whole run differential argument is wasted.
If you’re going to argue that having to travel across country and play a game the same day when many of your friends and families are living w/o power is anything resembling normal circumstances, then you don’t deserve to be taken seriously.
Enjoy your no-hitter* and early exit from the playoffs.
Wait, Time out
When did anyone here say that the No-No shouldn’t count? I believe we said that it probably wouldn’t have happened if Zambrano didn’t get two extra days of rest, have to travel 90 min in a bus, and face a team that had just weathered a hurricane, not slept for days, and then have a ridiculous travel schedule. However, you’re free to distort the facts as you please.
As per your Run differential argument, let’s just look at the Post ASB Astros. Why? Because before then, Villareal, Backe, and Roy Oswalt were giving up HR at an unprecedented pace. Villareal was in the top 5 for HR allowed at one point, as a relief pitcher — he was axed and then Roy regained form. Post ASB Astros own a +32 run differential (251 RS and 219 RA). So I don’t think it’s unsustainable.

Phillies are now one half game out of the East.. so we need the Brewers and one of either the Phillies or the Mets to keep on losin’.
so....
this past weekend has been bizzare to say the least. I came here to see what the reaction would be from Houston and it’s not that far off from what I expected. It sucks getting your schedule messed with. It sucks losing home games when you are desperately trying to make the playoffs. It’d be really convenient to blame one side, but I truly believe that everyone involved screwed up on this one big time. Best of luck to you guys the rest of the way. Hopefully the Cubs can knock off a few teams that are in your way.
