It's Official: Cubs v. Astros at Miller Park

The baseball Gods have been shining on us a lot lately, so I guess we can't complain, but they decided that the home series versus the Cubs should be held at Miller Park. The Astros will play one game on Sunday and one on Monday, according to an article on Astros.com. The third will be played at Minute Maid Park at the end of the season, if necessary. This essentially means another home series for the Cubs since Miller Park is within spitting distance of Chicago. It also means that we'll just have to sweep the Cubs on the road again.

BAH!

I’m not a fan of this… I would have rather them made up the games some other time at Houston than to play them at Miller Park. The Astros are a VERY good team when playing at home(much like the Cubs) and hold a 43-29 record at Minute Maid Park and have a sub .500 record on the road(37-38). Yes I realize the Astros will be the “home team” for this game… but that means little to nothing if they aren’t playing at MMP.

I don’t like it because I think it hurts the Astros chances at making the playoffs. Home field advantage is called home field advantage for a reason… it’s an advantage to play at home… and the Astros just got screwed out of a 3 game advantage on the season. It’s an advantage to not have to travel on a plane to the other side of the country to play a game… it’s an advantage to be able to sleep in your bed after the game and it’s an advantage to not have to sit on a plane for 5 hours(or however long it takes to fly from Houston to Milwaukee).

If these games didn’t mean so much to the Astros and their chances to make the playoffs, then maybe I don’t care as much… but the Astros have worked their butt’s off to be a very good team in the 2nd half of the season and have a chance at playing in the post season…

That being said… hopefully this hindrance to the Astros doesn’t prove to be too big of a issue and the Astros can go into Milwaukee and win both games against the Cubs…

Agreed on all points.

Don’t like it one bit.

I also agree.

Not only is this a disruption for the Astros players who have to travel when they weren’t planning on doing so…but it also creates a worse travel situation when they have to leave Milwaukee for Florida. Meanwhile, the Cubs’ next games are in Miller Park also…so they can just stay instead of traveling. Is there any doubt that the Cubs wouldn’t like this move?

This truly is just BS

But, we should never under estimate the heart of a champion…are we champions?

A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Glad to see you have your power back (I assume)

I hope you made it through the storm relatively unscathed.

Cardinals

They are pretty much getting their play off hopes stomped on by the Pirates. They lost another game to them tonight, (in extra innings) That puts them even further back from the Wild Card.. We’ll .. sorta.. they didn’t lose ground.. but no one thinks the Brewers are going to be the Wild Card leaders at the end of the year, do they? They can’t even win a coin toss!:p

What a lot of crap.
  • you, Bug Selig and MLB. **** you.

Yes it sucks... but...

Milwaukee is not neutral, and I am now interested in finding out Selig’s links to the profits from games at Miller. (not an accusation, just a curiosity right now…). Plus, there is a link on the chron site to a chicago tribune message board – some cubs fans are less then sympathetic to the situation, and rather full of entitlement (not all, some) but it made me more owly than the original situation. At least is is only 2 of the 3 games. And if the cubs have clinched at the end of the season, that game may not be as tricky.

I do not think the weekend has been mismanaged by Drayton – perhaps he was overly optimistic, but after Rita, a lot of people were. I also think he is now looking after the best interests of the team – which is his job.

But, one cubs fan had the right thought – good teams win where ever they play. Hopefully our boys are pissed about this and can use that energy to win tomorrow – after they travel all day! The worst part of all this could be if they decide they are victims to nature, to Selig, to the Cubs, and give up a little. Now, I don’t think they will – if they didn;t give up in June, they can’t give up now!

Would we be fighting this hard if it was a series against the Marlins played in Tampa Bay? Or if it were May? Yes, I think hypotheticals like that are unfair in a way – it’s not the Marlins, its the division leader, and its not May, its September – but someone has to be the better man, so let it be us: the better man that travels to Milwaukee and the better team that beats the cubs tomorrow.

yeah, I admit to getting pissed off at some of those comments from Chicago Tribune readers...

which were posted at chron.com. This quote from the Cubs’ Ryan Dempster was posted at the astrosdaily.com forum and it irritates me too:

“We’re all big boys here,” Ryan Dempster said. “Whatever the situation that is thrown at us, we handle adversity all the time, and we’ll handle it very well. … Nobody said it was going to be easy. Sometimes you’re going to hit speed bumps. This is a big one, but it’s all right. We’ll be just fine.”

OK, how exactly are the Cubs facing adversity from this event? It’s so terrible that they had to sit at home for a day or two and now have to board a 30 minute flight to play a game in Milwaukee. Give me a break. I doubt that people in Houston and Galveston dealing with the actual effect of the hurricane will have much sympathy for the adversity suffered by the Cubs.

My hope is that the Astros play with a bit of a chip on their shoulder and win these games.

Dempster's Quote

Hi all,
Just wanted to clear something up! Dempster’s quote about handling adversity and speed bumps was originally used when talking about the Cubs’ poor play in September. The original story had mentioned that Chicago hadn’t a prolonged slump all season, and that this is possibly the worst time to go into a slide…

thanks for the qualification!

I love it when, during any sort of of spat or rivalry or unusual situation, the players always (at least to the media) seem to be much more reasonable than many of the fans :)

the original post I got the Dempster quote from...

had a a link to the Chicago Tribune article, but the link had expired. So, I’ll take your word for the context of his comment.

I guess

maybe the Stros will have karma on their side. If the universe is fair, Carlos Zambrano and Jim Edmonds will just spontaneously combust, right there on the field.

In fairness...

…there was concern that now is not the time to be holding baseball games in Houston, and I agree. Dozens of cops work every Astros game, and they have better stuff to do right now.
