Carlos Lee out for the Season
The broken finger may end Carlos Lee's season. He was the hottest hitter in the league the past few weeks. It'll be interesting to see if Tejada or someone else picks it up to replace Lee.
Here's the first paragraph from the Chronicle:
CINCINNATI -- Astros slugger Carlos Lee is likely out for the rest of the season after breaking his left pinky finger in tonight’s 3-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park.

7 weeks to go in the season
and he’ll still finish with 100 RBI. He would have had a shot at setting new career highs in both HR and RBI – what a shame.

Ugh
They’re calling up Abercrombie to fill the sizable gap Carlos leaves behind.

Dangit
He musta got popped good. I didn’t watch the game on TV, but the radio guys said he was rolling around in the dirt, in agony.
Looks like we’re headed for another September where we field the Round Rock Express.

Make it BAT
I love avocado’s and Abercrombie has starts with an A.
A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Wigginton and Erstad
Cecil Cooper’s early thinking is Wigginton and Erstad to play left.

The injury
The announcers said Carlos Lee lays his little finger across the end of the bat.
If so, I imagine the finger was squashed between the bat and the 85-90mph baseball.
The Chronicle article says Carlos will have surgery on the finger.,

I made my post in the wrong thread...I hope you don't mind if I repeat it here:
When we talked in the last week or so about Lee’s salary, I suggested, half-heartedly, that putting Erstad in LF, instead of Lee, wouldn’t be as big a loss as it seems, because the defensive improvement would offset part of the offensive loss. Now I feel bad about the possibility of seeing that experiment take place. Lee is out for the year, unless the Astros make the playoffs.
The statement I mentioned above about Lee was based on his normal offensive stats, which are generally in the mid-800’s for OPS. Since the All Star Break, Lee has been on fire, with a .372 BA and 1.11 OPS. (His OPS is 1.572 in August.) Even with defensive improvement, it will be hard for the team to make up for losing that kind of offense.
The best way for the Astros to overcome that kind of loss is for Berkman to get out of the offensive doldrums. Berkman has a .740 OPS since the ASB, and he is hitting .219 with a .636 OPS in August. If Berkman would get back to his "normal" OPS in the .900’s for the remainder of the year, that would go a long way. It also wouldn’t hurt if Erstad and Bourn could pitch in on the offensive side more.
The Astros called up Abercrombie to replace Lee. I’m not too excited about that move. We’ve seen him already. Try someone else. Maybe even Nick Gorneault. He has hit 3 grand slams this year.

Lee was not going to continue
to hit as well as he had been recently, especially since the run of games against Cincinnati ends today.
I don’t think we get hurt all that much with Erstad. We trade Lee’s power for Erstad’s consistency and improved defense. It’s a loss, but not a crusher, in my view.
It takes more than pitching to win a pennant, but not much!

I glanced at Gorneault's Round Rock numbers...
and didn’t exactly feel too good about his strikeout/walk ratio: 78 SO / 41 BB.
But then I looked at Abercrombie’s numbers: 93 SO / 9 BB. Ouch! And all that in 30 fewer AB than Gorneault.
It looks like the only real advantage you get with Abercrombie is that he’s got a little more speed (17 steals/9 caught stealing in the minors, versus Gorneault’s 7 steals, 7 caught stealing), but that doesn’t mean too much if Abercrombie can’t get on base in the first place.

How about Barry Bonds in left?
Richard Justice suggests signing Barry Bonds to finish the season.
Barry Bonds was no ESPN yesterday from a Giants game. He looked thinner, healthier, happier. Said he was not retired and was ready to play.
Assuming he can hit without steroids bulging the muscles and whatever else steroids do, would you favor signing him?

Just when I thought we'd never
see a slower player than Carlos!

Six (or more) fractures
According to JJO, Carlos Lee ” was informed that actually his pinky might have six or more fractures to it.”
The ball crushed his finger .

I wonder...
a) how much that would have affected his swing;
b) how much it would have affected his fielding; and
c) how much quicker he could re-join the team.
For as much money as he’s making, the amputation option has to at least be considered…
