Houston Astros at Cincinnati Reds, Aug 9, 2008 6:10 PM CDT
How does Bronson Arroyo have 10 wins and a 5.55 ERA!!?!?! Goes to show how much production you can get from the Reds offense...
Moehler starts for the Astros today and has been way better than I expected after moving to the rotation. In 16 starts this season, Moehler is 7-4 with a 3.76 ERA. Moehler has been unusually good in his last 2 outings since only making it through 2 1/3 innings against the Pirates on 7/23... Since that time Moehler has started 2 games, in the 1st he went 8 2/3 innings while allowing just 2 runs, and in his last outing he went 5 innings(Rain caused the quick exit) and gave up 0 ER. Moehler has won his last 3 decisions.

Tejada
follows the Matsui walk with single to left… started off 0-2 and came back with a hit..
Runners on 1st and 2nd for teh Puma
Go 'Stros!
Berkman
Singles to right, Matsui scores from 2nd and Tejada moves to 2nd.
Astros lead 1-0
Go 'Stros!
Loretta
I find it odd that Loretta is batting 5th and Pence 6th… the main reason is I consider Wigginton > Loretta and if Pence bats ahead of Wigginton… then he should bat ahead of Loretta as well..
Loretta lines out to 2nd for out 1. Bases still loaded.
Go 'Stros!
Game starting very positively I'd say
As I write this, Astros have one run in , bases loaded , and no outs—in the top of the first

Bottom 2nd
Reds have Keppinger, Patterson and Bruce due up in the inning.
Votto for the Reds is out on bereavement today… glad to not see him in the lineup, but not for the reasons he is out.
Go 'Stros!
Patterson
Pops out to Loretta in foul territory…
JD mentions that Patterson has the lowest avg in MLB of batters with 200 AB’s or more… it shows why here.
Go 'Stros!
Bruce
Flies out to Lee in LF to end the inning.. When I went to the ‘Stros game last week, there were some Bruce fans in the seats right in front of me… one was wearing an Astros hat and Bruce jersey(maybe family or friends?)
Quick ining for Moehler… I like it!
Go 'Stros!
Dunn
.236 average, but 32 home runs… Also has a .377 OBP… so even though his average sucks… he’s still a very producitve player.
Dunn works the count full(go figure, he works a lot of counts full) and then breaks his bat grounding out to Lance for out 2.
Go 'Stros!
Tejada
grounds up the middle where Phillips fields, tags 2nd and throws to 1st for a double play.
Go 'Stros!
Bloodied finger
Pitched ball hit Carlos Lee on little finger. He’s out of the game

Yes Flowed down his finger
Reds announcer thought it was his fingernail. He said Carlos hangs his pinky over the edge of the bat and it got hit flush.
It may be broken. It didn’t look crooked though.

Pence
Cardinals beat the Cubs today 12-4(so says JD). That sucks… I hope the Cubs win every game from here on out(except if they play us). We have next to no chance to beat the Cubs… if we’re going to the playoffs this season, it’s going to be the wild card.
Go 'Stros!
Quintero
Come on Q! Quintero grounds to 1st with Valentin making a nice diving stop to his right and then throws to a covering Arroyo to end the inning.
Aflac Trivia Question – Name the only 2 pitchers to throw a no-hitter the same season they won a Cy-Young

Bottom 4th
Reds have Keppinger, Patterson and Bruce due up in the inning..
Going to grab some food, be back in a few.
Go 'Stros!
Quickly followed by his first run scored.
2-0 Astros. Moehler doing it all. :p

Top 5th
Astros scored.. Moehler double and then was sac’d over. He scored on Tejada’s AB(I missed it), Berkman walked(1-1 with 2 walks on the night) and then Erstad flied out to end the inning.
Astros up 2-0
Go 'Stros!
Dunn
Grounds to Matsui in right field(due to the IF shift) robbing him of a single. out 1
Go 'Stros!
That would be worth plunking Arroyo
every time he bats for the next 2 months.
by entropic soul on Aug 9, 2008 7:42 PM CDT up reply actions
Erstad may have payed Arroyo to do that...
:p
Well, I guess now all those people that say Lee’s offense doesn’t make up for his defense will get to see what it’s like the other way around.

Loretta
grounds sharply to 3rd, Encarnacion boots it to Keppinger at 2nd who tries to throw Loretta out at 1st but is too late as Loretta reaches on what is initially ruled a single…
Probably should be E5
Go 'Stros!
Top 7th
Moehler, Matsui and Tejada due up in the inning.
Moehler only has 61 pitches in the game, so I can’t imagine Cooper pulling him out of the game now(well…. I can imagine it being that it’s Cooper making the decision).
Go 'Stros!
Speaking of Moehler...
he better not take off on us in the offseason. We gave him a chance when no one else would! Twice! >:o
Maybe Tjada wil take Carlos Lee'sole
Homerun here

Bruce
Hits a hard line drive single past a diving Matsui. Matsui layed out for it but barely missed getting his glove on it.. Nice try
Go 'Stros!
Phillips
grounds past a diving Berkman, Berkman layed out for it but barely missed getting his glove on it.. Nice try(yes I copied that from the one above)
Go 'Stros!
Dunn
Uh oh.. Big Dun up with 1 out and 2 runners on.
Come on Moehler!
Dunn flies to CF for out 2, Bruce moves to 3rd on the play.
Go 'Stros!
Encarnacion
JD mentions Geary is warming up… hopefully we don’t need anyone else…
oooh… Both ball 1 and 2 looked like strikes to me… borderline strikes, but strikes nonetheless.
Damnit, Encarnacio grounds to Tejada’s right, he tries to back hand it but the ball rolls up his arm allowing Bruce to score from 3rd… Ruled a base hit.
Go 'Stros!
Carlos Lee would have hit 5 home runs already.
In the sixth inning, even.

Bako
Geary in to pitch… Works the count full and then walks.
Moehler only through 80 pitches… I would have left him in… but then again, I would do a lot of things differently than Cooper
Go 'Stros!
Cabrera
Is Brocail not available?
Cabrera swings and bunts it in front of Quintero who fields and throws to 1st moving Bako over to 2nd.
Go 'Stros!
Keppinger
JD just mentioned Byrdak and Brocail in the pen.. not sure why Brocail isn’t already in if he’s warming up. If I’m wanting to rest him, I wouldn’t be warming him up…
Keppinger flies out to right, Bako stays at 2nd.
Go 'Stros!
Hunter Pence
Is that his second GIDP on the night?

Bourn
Weathers still in to pitch to Bourn.
Bourn strikes out like a minor leaguer for the 3rd time tonight… Will Bourn be here next season?????
Go 'Stros!
Newhan to PH
Batting .200 on the season… I can see why we are using him here(sarcasm)... JD mentions he’s 1-18 as a PHer.
Newhan grounds sharply to Phillips at 2nd who turns another double play(4 for the Reds tonight)
Go 'Stros!
JR House
hmmmmm. Couldn’t he be more useful than Newhan?

Hey, all it takes is a 13 game winning streak by the Astros
and a 13 game losing streak by the Cubs…
And we’ll probably still be behind the Cardinals and the Brewers. :p
by entropic soul on Aug 9, 2008 8:43 PM CDT up reply actions
Yep - Cubs lost
Even if Astros don’t catch the Cardinals and Brewers it’s still much more fun to win a game than to lose one (or two or three).

Bruce
Valverde in to pitch for the Astros.
Bruce flies out to Erstad on the left field line… 1 pitch-1 out
Go 'Stros!
Phillips
Flies out to Bourn in right-center for out 2. Come on Valverde!!!
Did you know there is a road in Houston named Val Verde?
I didn’t… but I drove past it yesterday while going to the reception after the wedding.
Go 'Stros!
