Around SBN: Smoltz leaning toward signing with Red Sox Bar-right-arrows

Can Astros recover for next year?

Word is out on astros.com that Wade is looking at Freddy Garcia.  This is obviously in the early stages and the chance of this happening right now is very slim.  However, if  the Astros do pick up Garcia, do you think they could be competitive next year?  If Oswalt gets back to his form, Wandy stays in form, and Backe and Wolf stay as a decent 4 and 5, the Astros will have what is termed a "decent" rotation, at least to me, and will potentially have a potent offense.  Thoughts?

A rotation of

Oswalt, Wandy, Garcia, Backe and Wolf doesn’t do anything more than the current rotation does for me…

I’m not sold that Wolf is a good pitcher and I’m not sold that Garcia will return to be a good pitcher(he did have surgery recently on his shoulder).

I’m looking for the Astros to improve their rotation more than a Garcia signing…

If Garcia is pitching like it is, say, 2005...

yeah, maybe. But the odds that he will return to top of the rotation form are low, IMO. Garcia knows how to pitch, so I think he might turn into a serviceable starter, even if his velocity doesn’t come back. However, you would have expect a huge year (like a true No. 2 starter) from Wandy, in order to feel like that rotation can put the Astros in contention….and that is asking for a lot.

Even if Garcia

is pitching like he has in the past… I’m still wanting something else… Garcia has never really been a top of the line pitcher… he’s been a decent #2 or #3 starter in the past, but still not what I’m looking for as a #2…

The reason I mentioned 2005...

Garcia’s stats in 2005:

3.87 ERA, 228 IP, 1.25 WHIP, 14-8 W/L record.

To be a contender we need

2 ACES (top ten percent of pitchers)
1 EXCELLENT (Top 25 percent of pitchers)
2 AVERAGE (mid 50 percent of pitchers)

We have:

1 ACE (Roy, when healthy)
1 EXCELLENT (Wandy, maybe)
???? (Backe, Moehler, etc.)

We are short:

1 ACE
perhaps 1 EXCELLENT
1 or 2 AVERAGE, depending on where Wandy falls.

That’s a substantial deficit.

If the starting corps could be upgraded to contender status, I think the relievers and closer could get us there.

We are also short one solid offensive outfielder plus a catcher who can hit at least .250

It takes more than pitching to win a pennant, but not much!

Just throwing this out there...

I live in San Diego County and Jake Peavy has been upset for awhile now, this season and last season. One about his contract, two about how the team is playing. Jake and Roy are offseason pals, Hey Roy, call Jake! John Moores the owner of the Padres is going through a nasty divorce with Becky Moores, and she is pursuing the team. The Padres are sellers and have even brought up the beloved Khalil Greene who is like Hunter Pence to us, in trade rumors. The Astros need to get Jake Peavy, he wants to win, he is a gamer, do what needs to be done!

There's the other ACE we need!

How about we trade Drayton for Peavy?

It takes more than pitching to win a pennant, but not much!

the whole world would line up for peavy

we’d be way far down the list in terms of what we could give up

him and Roy O are best friends!! Maybe we can get him for the league minimum ;)

maybe John Moores would donate him to Houston

he’s given a lot of money to U of H right? why not a pitcher?

I don't see how Peavy can be upset about his contract....

he just signed a more lucrative contract extension with the Padres just before the season began. If he wanted to play elsewhere, he could have declined to extend his contract.

We could just

get Sheets and Peavy and put these rotation issues to bed…
