Houston Astros at Cincinnati Reds, Aug 8, 2008 6:10 PM CDT
Wolf has one good outing, and one bad outing under his belt since joining the Astros... but overall (ERA wise), he has been an excellent pitcher. Then you look a little deeper and see the 2.04 WHIP and the brakes halt on the good pitcher train. Hopefully we'll see more of the Wolf we seen last game in which he went 5 innings while giving up no runs, 3 walks and 7 k's to earn his 1st victory in Astros red.
Wolf has only faced the Reds one time this season before tonight and pitched well. On May 22nd he went 7 innings allowing just 2 runs while walking 1 and striking out 9. I'll take that again tonight...

are the reds actually more pathetic than us?
got so used to getting beat up by the pirates I forgot there could be other teams in the NL Central that suck worse
Bourn hits a pop fly single that dies in CF
but his swings seem to be back like the old ways, not going the other way like he was before injury
it’s a hit in the box score.. but..

speaking of runs scored
anyone know off the top of their head where we rate in RS compared to last year’s team?
easiest thing is to compare rankings...
since I don’t feel like calculating runs per game. Astros rank 21st in the majors in runs currently. Astros ranked 24th in the majors in runs in 2007.
faith and family night?

paulino supposedly has tendinitis
but no structural damage. shut down for at least a week, but not as bad as it could have been.
That's good news

apparently as his legacy
Craig Biggio devised his penchant to swing at sliders low and away to Hunter. that was nice of him.

Carlos Lee hustles??
I hope you’ve all settled your accounts with the Lord, b/c the end is nigh
two he stole in two night
damn, Q gave that a ride.
i feel good about him and towles at C next year at least.
astros are leaving too many runners on base.
Miggy blew with the bases loaded, and in that inning Berkman hit a dinky infield grounder to ruin the inning.
it's gonna be tough to be a .500 club if those guys can't score in that situation
It helps if the hitter thinks you're a little crazy. - Nolan
Lee flubs a fly ball
phillips hit it deep, carlos jumped, it hit him in the glove and he just booted it.
wow
dunn hits it off his hands, a little bloop right to the bag at 2nd.
phillips looked a little lost, went back to the bag, Miggy had to go around him to field the ball, which he did and then threw out Dunn at 1st.
Joe West called Phillips out for interference. It was a bad call, but we catch a break. Dunn at 1st. 1 out.
on further review
it prob was a bad call, but the way that Phillips sort of hesitated in front Miggy when he was returning to the bag, maybe there was justification for it.
it’s pretty clear that Miggy had to go around Phillips to get to the ball, and even though Phillips was going back to the bag, he sort of hung up there for a second.
whatever it was - it confused MLB gameday

I want to see an investigative report
on how exactly Game Day works. are there a bunch of sweatshop children somewhere typing like monkeys? b/c for all it does, sometimes it seems to make really stupid mistakes.
hard to complain too much though, considering how much better it makes listening to the game on the radio, or following it on the ‘net
At least Pence didn't strike out that time.
Has it come to that with Pence? That I’m happy when he doesn’t strike out?

rumor that the marlins claimed ausmus off waivers
they eventually signed LoDuca, so I doubt anything else will happen.
almost all players get put on waivers this time of year, and many of them get claimed...
but it is rare if anything comes of it.
Seriously?!
Aww man wish I’d seen that :O Watching the Opening ceremonies
long fly ball for the lead off double...which is a bad sign for Sampson.
He gets murdered if he allows balls in the air. And now a line drive. not good.
Great LEAPING catch by Carlos Lee
But game tied as runner on third scored

Long flyball to the wall scores a run on a sacrifice.
Lee made a nice jumping catch to snag it. Sampson continues to get flyballs.
Matsui with a chance for the cycle?
but not this time. the hardest part of the cycle was left, anyway.

true, but
he’s in a slump that’s lasted > month and his numbers are still competitve. it’s perfectly reasonable to assume he can turn it around and have a big finish. expecting another May is probably out of the question, but he is still up there.
I doubt he’ll win though b/c the team is so bad. he would have to have had 3 Mays w/ this crappy team. of course if he had, we might not be this crappy
for instance, check out McTaggart's post today at the chron
asking if Carlos Lee is the Astros’ MVP. After he runs down all the stats, Berkman is still ahead of Carlos in many, despite his recent slump.
http://blogs.chron.com/gamedayastros/2008/08/is_carlos_lee_the_astros_mvp.html
it's sad because Berkman's run at the MVP...
was one of the few things for Astros fans to be proud of this year. Now we have to listen to Cardinals’ fans tell us, “we told you that there is no way Berkman is better than Pujols.”
even if he doesn’t get the MVP, I’m still proud of what he’s done this year…it certainly has been the highlight of the season for me
and he does have time to turn things around and finish with incredible numbers

amazing thing
during this slump is that Berkman’s OBP is still near .400. probably still the highest on the team except maybe carlos during that time period
BTW, it was interesting that Sampson struck out his buddy, Adam Dunn.
Sampson and Dunn are good friends, but Chris always seems to get the better of Dunn.
Wigginton was my big hope

Ironic that Matsui looks like he might be Wade's best acquisition...
during the off-season….yet it was the Wade signing which drew the most scorn and ridicule from the blogosphere at the time. I think Dayne Perry called it the worst off-season move of the year by any GM (at the time). .280 BA, .342 OBP, .402 SLG 82% SB rate. That’s not bad. And better than I expected. People said that it would be impossible for Matsui to duplicate his numbers for the Rockies. Hmm…. he has a 1 point difference in his OPS, compared to when he played for Colorado last year. His OBP and SLG are virtually identical to last year.
Nice win..
I caught some of the game on the radio while driving to the wedding and to the reception and caught the post game wrap up afterwards… Sounds like some clutch hitting to me!
