A meeting of two mediocre pitchers should result in a high scoring affair.  So load your fantasy rosters accordingly.  The rubber game should be a doozy.

Of no importance, but Backe sports a 1-0 W-L Record, on the strength of a 3.00 ERA at Wrigley.  Unfortunately that is 6IP from his only start in the friendly confines -- making this absolutely useless information.

With Brocail's meltdown yesterday, I know I'm hoping that his given the rest of the week off to rest and avoid high leverage situations.

Who knows? Maybe it'll be a pitchers duel.

As we continue to fade into mediocrity my question to you becomes this:

6-pitch 1-2-3 inning as the Astros go down in the top of the first. that’s always a frustrating way to start a game.

follow up question

to your poll…

if the Astros put together a nice run and pulled within a few games of the wild card, but fell short, playing just a few games mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, would the enjoyment of “meaningful” games in September be worth not being sellers in July?

by littlevisigoth on Aug 6, 2008 1:31 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

For me

No, because I don’t see it happening, and I don’t see them leaping frogging everyone in our division let alone the rest of the NL to make it happen. I’d rather not lose out on future dominance for present mediocrity.

A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

my contention though

is that there weren’t going to be big moves to make.

not sure what they could have done except maybe move Valverde. i don’t buy the “firesale is our only hope” viewpoint. it’s just not that easy.

If Astros win and Reds and Cardinals lose today

Astros will be five games ahead of Reds and five games behind Cardinals in the loss column,

idle pondering

but i wonder if Backe might be a serious candidate for the silver slugger award this season. he’s currently hitting a staggering .314 with a .911 OPS (small sample size of 35 ABs). Zambrano and Owings are probably more highly regarded than Backe, and both have considerably more AB’s (both have been used more frequently as pinch-hitters, as well as being better pitchers and getting more AB’s by lasting longer into games). Backe’s rate stats are better though, so if he keeps it up, maybe he can get some consideration.

At least

He’ll have that to hang his hat on at the end of the day.

Matsui

with a 2-out ground-rule double over Edmonds.

now would be a good time for Hunter to make some ammends for his awful game yesterday.

disgusting.

Just Numb

Backe has been so bad this year, command, etc. That you just knew it was coming. I even told my brother as much.

I get that this guy was nails for us in the post season, but he’s just not pitching well. He has TERRIBLE command. He needs to find his stride in the bull pen or figure out what he’s doing out there with his new ligament.

A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

30 pitches thrown

Ridiculous

Does anybody want to chime in on the poll question now?

With out restocking the farm, Brandon will probably still have a job.

I watched a muted television as I ate a late lunch downtown...and WGN showed a very animated

Backe when Cooper took him out. It looked like Backe was reading the riot act to Cooper, poking Cooper’s chest with his finger. Did any announcers say what was going on?

by clack on Aug 6, 2008 5:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

WGN Announcers speculated

Backe was making his case it wasn’t all his fault, that the umpire made some bad calls. But I think he had no real idea what was going on. At any rate they weren’t sympathetic to Backe.

Earlier in the game the same announcers noted Backe and Quintero weren’t communicating well.

Backe says:

“It was time for me to come out,” Backe said after giving up a career-high 11 runs on nine hits and six walks over 3 1/3 innings. “I literally just apologized to (Cooper) for not being able to get into the fifth or sixth inning. That was all that was said.

“Really that’s all there was to it. Like I said, it’s just an unfortunate day for me and an unfortunate day for us as the Astros. Tim Byrdak really gets a big thumbs up for what he did.”

Embarassing

We really had to win this series to even think about a smidgeon of a possibility to be wild card contenders, and Coop leaves Backe in for a 8 run inning and a second grand slam setup in the following inning?

TBuford’s winning me over to the “Fire Ed Wade, Cecil Cooper, and fire sale the lot of them” side.

Should the bullpen pitch 6+ innings?

They are already overworked because of the last few days. Backe just sucks and he needs to go. Or at least go to the bullpen. Lesson learned for next year.

i don't think

this was a MUST win series. even if we’re somehow able to average two out of three from here on out, which is about what it’s going to take, we’re not going to win EVERY series. dropping two in Chicago (best record in the league, best record at home in all of baseball) isn’t much to be ashamed of, and ultimately doesn’t change much about where we stand. we need to win 6 or 7 of these next 8 against Cincinatti and San Fran.
