won't be able to stick around
for the whole game, but i just wanted to tune in and say how much i hate that stupid thing that Dempster does with his glove in his delivery.
oh, and F the Cubs…
Go Astros!
Astros take early lead
Tejada singles followed by a Lance Berkman sac fly..
Lee follows with a single to left but Fukudome throws the ball out of the stadium while trying to get Tejada at home… Lee moves to 2nd and then 3rd on the ball going out of play.
Go 'Stros!
Pence almost has an RBI
but that damn Jim Edmonds makes a diving catch to save the run and the end the first.
Cubs scoreless through 3
Astros still lead 1-0.
Moehler throwing a bunch of strikes, I think I just heard through 30 pitches, he has 6 balls.
Go 'Stros!
Pence
follows Lee with a single of his own. Runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out for Ty Wigginton..
Who Follows that with a single! Bases juiced for Q
Go 'Stros!
bases loaded one out
If carlos Lee had taken third on Pence’s hit or ran faster on Wigginton’s he would have scored already. and Pence would be on third.

Pence trying to field a foul ball that barely goes into the stands
he turns away and the ball deflects off a fan and almost hits Pence.. he jumps and then turns around and starts laughing and then throws the ball back into the stands..
Go 'Stros!
Moehler K's Ramirez
Ramirez doesn’t like it… looked like a good pitch to me, and replay confirms… easy strike call.. Go sit down Aramis
Go 'Stros!
Edmonds
hits a liner to right field, Pence slides on his knees to try and catch it, ball hits his glove at his hip and then bounces away towards the foul line… Edmonds to 2nd
Go 'Stros!
Gotta be an error on Pence
but it’s ruled a double

scorers never want to call errors on OF'ers
unless it’s on a throw. they’re supposed to make judgments but they don’t seem to like to
I agree... well
I’m not 100% sure that it should have been an error… but I lean that way a little
Go 'Stros!
Cubs fans booing the 2nd strike to Soto
Geeze, open your eyes… It was an easy strike call… Above the knees and then curved to the outside part of the plate.. still completely over the plate
Go 'Stros!
Cubs scoreless through 4
Astros up 2-0.
Moehler forces soto to ground to himself and then Moehler takes it to 1st to end the inning
Go 'Stros!
He had a nice hit in the first.
Too bad it was too straight away center. :(
I thought he would do a little bit better after that.
But we all know he hates Wrigley Field.

i know the booth guys were talking about that earlier
but i’d never heard anything about berkman and chicago. i can’t really think about him and any particular city other than cincinnati.
wonder what we could have got for hunter?
not advocating trading him, but just curious. i’m sure he’s a guy a lot of teams would LIKE to have, but I can’t see anyone breaking the bank for him.

just read the chron guy's post from earlier
before his walk to drive in a run tonight, Q had no walks in 66 AB’s this year.

We need the hitters to learn a little discipline.
Walks are way too low.
by entropic soul on Aug 4, 2008 7:51 PM CDT up reply actions
i don't think hitters can really learn discipline
not saying they can’t improve some % in K/BB ratio, but overally, you either have it or not. we’ve failed because we haven’t developed or acquired players who have it.
interesting thing to think about is whether “plate discipline” declines in later years a great deal, or whether the diminishing of other more physical hitting skills deteriorates and exposes a previously concealed weakness in that area (e.g. Craig Biggio’s sharp drop in OBP over the last several years of his career)
I agree somewhat that plate discipline tends to show up early for most players.
But “high OBP/low BA/HR power” is sometimes used as the profile for “old baseball skills,” i.e., many older hitters offset their diminishing ability to hit for average by taking more walks and hitting more HRs. In retrospect, Ensberg was a good example of that. Jose Cruz was a good example of that.
Expect a LONG delay
I’d guess 2 hours minimum (maybe 90 minutes depending on what the light green on radar means following a heavy rain for teh next hour plus)

For what it's worth
Buck Showalter just assured the ESPN viewership that this game would be resumed, since it’s the Cubs people that will make the call. Take that for what it’s worth.
A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

That was wild.
Prince Fielder went bonkers on the Brewers starting pitcher Parra and had to be restrained by just about every player in the dugout.

Anybody on here play fantasy?? If so: who’s been your biggest surprise, and who’s been your biggest bust?
Surprise: Evan Longoria
Bust: Nick Swisher
I'm betting game will be called
If I read the radar correclty, the heaviest rain has passed Chicago but about 3 more hours of lighter rain will pass over the city. That means midnight before it stops.

We may get an answer to the question, What if they finished a game and nobody showed up to watch.

by Joe in Birmingham on Aug 4, 2008 9:21 PM CDT reply actions
it will be finished
I doubt they’ll resume it tonight. Couldn’t they just finish it at noon or 1 tomorrow, and play the second game almost immediately after? There’s no way the Cubs will allow this one to be called after just 5, losing in a rain-shortened shutout by only 2. If we were up by 5 or more, maybe. But as is, I expect this game to be finished either tonite or tomorrow afternoon.
just tuned in
to crawfish boxes, that is… without having to re-read everything, can someone update me? i get that there are tornado warnings/heavy rain… anyone following, is there a chance of resuming tonight?
your guess is as good as ours
last official word was that there are tornado warnings, but game hasn’t been called.
On ESPN's BBTN, they said that there is still a chance the game will be continued
tonight. If it isn’t, then the Astros will win the game. The Cubs have to be pushing baseball officials as much as they can to hold off on the calling the game for as long as they can.
ugh, but...
anyone turned over to the rangers game? i really don’t like watching them, i get a weird/uncomfortable feeling, like i don’t belong and it’s a club i never wanted to belong to anyway, every time i watch them… but it’s on and it’s vs the yankees… and seems like a pretty good game thus far..
the Rangers
I have a bunch of buddies from Dallas, and whenever they rip on the Houston clubs, I always point out that the Rangers are perhaps the most irrelevant team in American professional sports. Anyone agree?
nope
irrelevant is too ambiguous, but I’m not sure how they’re worse than any of another 10-12 franchises, and pretty much all hockey teams
clarification
well, irrelevant in the sense that at least the Pittsburghs, Tampa Bays (before this year), Kansas Cities of the world are known in MLB for being small market teams that just dont compete. The Rangers are a mid market team who havent sniffed the playoffs in a decade, and havent had any “great” players in that time, save A-Rod and possibly Hamilton. Basically, they really arent worth mentioning in most regards.

lol. unless I missed something, but they’re cheering for a K to end the seventh like it was the end of a no hitter
also
they are booing every single astro that bats… i am a bit unclear on their phillies fan-like behavior…
i went to a white sox game earlier this year
that was rained out, but they obviously went through the whole routine of waiting to see if the rain would stop. during the three hours we waited, all of the concessions were still open, so it was just a mob of people hanging out in the concourse, getting hammered. anybody that wasn’t drinking was gone, and any slightest inclination that play might resume got everybody all excited. i can only imagine the crowd if play had actually resumed, as it did at Wrigley yesterday. i just chalked the crowd up to being well-lubricated and amped up for anything resembling baseball.
also, and i don’t know if this applies to Wrigley, but i assume it does, i was impressed by how much pre-game drinking went on at that White Sox game. i like to grab a cheap couple of beers across the street before Astros games, but the crowd in Chicago seemed to really be getting after it, more like a football game crowd.

the thunder
wasn’t too loud on the ESPN feed, i think. I thought maybe lightening had struck close to one of the players. :D

hard to tell if it actually hit anything, but it struck down on something directly in line w/ the big flagpole thing on top of the scoreboard in CF and that building behind it.

it’s over… I don’t think they could continue the game another day… but I don’t really know the rules exactly for these cases… I’m thinking if they rain delay it to the point to where the game isn’t going to continue that day, the game is over.

on the chron blog
http://blogs.chron.com/unofficialscorer/2008/08/another_rain_delay_1.html
just reading the rule suggests ump may not be able to finally call the game until 30 min after game has been suspended for rain delay. I think that would mean 30 min after the last suspension, so maybe we’ll hear something after another 15 min or so.
I was driving and listening to Astros radio broadcast before the 2d delay...
and the two guys (OK, I still don’t know their names or tell them apart) were just ripping the officials up and down for failing to call the game earlier. They were using terms like “outrageous,” “dangerous,” and “absurd.” One of them said, “even a chicken has a big enough brain to know when to get out of the rain.” Even before the last big lightning bolt struck the scoreboard, they were saying that it was very dangerous, with lightning visibly striking the parking lost next to Wrigley. One of them said, “if you have a heart condition, this would not be the place to be,” and said that the players on the field seemed scared. They wondered how batters could concentrate with frequent lightning strikes nearby. They said that the Cubs must be pressuring the officials to keep it going because these conditions would have caused the came to be called anywhere else. One of the guys said, “Oh, I know they’re telling them, ‘we have to play the game, because the Cubs have to go the World Series, blah, blah…’ but with several hundred million dollars of payroll on the field, keeping players from getting injured or killed is more important.”
sounds like the radio guys are over the top as usual
but I basically agree that it was a shortsighted decision to proceed w/ the game. i’ve never seen a ballgame keep being played with so much thunder & lightning around before.
Angels trying to blow their game in the 9th
had 5-1 lead, but error by Texeira, 2 run single and now a WP have runners at 2nd and 3rd w/ 2 out
