St. Louis Cardinals at Houston Astros, Aug 31, 2008 1:05 PM CDT
Pretty impressive win last night as the Astros took the 1st two games from the Cardinals of a 3 game series.
You have to give it to Moehler... he may not be the best pitcher and his stats may not tell the whole story... but he keeps you in ball games and gives you a chance to win. And that's exactly what he did yesterday. Moehler wasn't overly impressive yesterday going 6 innings and giving up 3 earned runs... but he struck out 6 and left the game to the bullpen with a big lead(thanks to the offense). He did what we needed him to do and at the end of the night, went home with a win and has the best W/L record on the team by far(10-5).
But the real story last night was the offense... It's pretty rare that 6 of your 8 starting position players all go for multiple hits and then your other 2 starting position players also cash in a hit. It also helps when you blast 3 home runs and put up a 6 spot in the 1st inning. Great game.
Today the Astros send Wandy Rodriguez to the hill against Todd Wellemeyer in hopes to finish off the sweep against the Cardinals. Game time 1:05 PM CDT.
Not surprised to see basically the exact lineup as yesterday(with the change of Ausmus for Quintero).

True
Although, if you do the math… 6 innings with 3 earned runs equates to a 4.5 ERA… which I don’t really consider to be that good… I think the MLB average ERA is right around the 4.00 mark
Go 'Stros!
The Home Plate Umpire
is the guy who badly missed the call on Quintero’s sinqle called a catch in right last night. It’ll be interesting to see if that brings out his inner Angel Hernandez today.

Wandy does not take much of a windup
I wonder if it would improve his speed or his step to home plate.

If I made the statement
That Pujols is the best hitter in baseball right now..
would anyone argue it?
Go 'Stros!
The homer in me would say Wigginton
but it’s hard to make a convincing argument against Pujols.

Odd force out on Pujols at 2nd
Hunter runs in and dives trying to catch a blooper to right.. Pence misses it but is able to get the force on Pujols at 2nd.
Go 'Stros!
Pence should have caught it
It looked like it was in his glove but came out when he rolled on the ground
Go 'Stros!
Couple hits, but no runs in the 1st for Wandy
That inning could have been much worse and probably should have been bases loaded with 1 out for Glaus

Followed by a long sac fly to right by Blum
Berkman moves to 3rd on the play. 1 out.
I thought Blum’s was gone off the bat.
Go 'Stros!
Berkman doubled
Pujols only singled when he batted

I've asked this before
but I thought Hunter Pence was taught to slide feet first only after he injured himself last year on the head first slide

I wrote two pithy comments
and neither one posted. Now I’ve forgotten what they were – but they were true gems – take my word for it.

Astros TV Announcers earlier said
Wandy’s pitching style causes a lot of balls to be hit to the third baseman. that certainly has been the case today. I’ll look to see if the left fielder plays closer to the line also.

I love seeing Tony LaRussa
explain to the home plate umpire he does not appreciate the quality of his umpiring.
(Where were you last night , Tony?)

Argued from the dugout
Two Cardinls (Pujols and Ludwick) called out on balls off the plate must have irritated him

May as well get the injuries out of the way this year though. :p

Wouldn’t be the worst thing to shut a young pitcher down for the year. Contrast it with Reds who will probably ride Volquez and Cueto till they drop.
Astros are trying to catch the Brewers for the Wild Card spot
Haven’t you heard?

whatever happens in this game
it’s been nice to put a major dent in the Cards’ wild card hopes (as desperate as they already were). hopefully the D’Backs will contribute to that cause as well.
I hope starting tomorrow in the Cubs Series
Astros give Brewers and Cardinals hope they may catch the Cubs (although it would be fun to see the Astros pass thee Cardinals in the standings)

Wellenmeyer leaves game
after Michael Bourn announced as pinch hitter for LaTroy Hawkins .
Good game – allowed only four hits in seven innings. Luckily for the Astros a double and a single came in the second inning for the game’s lone run.

I was about to write he's having a bad game with two strikeouts
but a 1 for 4 with a critical homerun in the 8th is a good game in my book.

Wigginton batting about .375 in his last 14 at-bats
counting only homeruns as hits.

Is Wiggginton's shift to left field
a factor in his vastly improved hitting or just a coincidence?

Awesome!
while there’s not much that can make this season less disappointing, sweeping the Cardinals, at a crucial time in their season is pretty sweet. We put them 6 1/2 back w/ less than 30 games to go, and they’re chasing two pretty good teams. We’re only 3 back of the Cards ourselves, so maybe with some of the wind out of their sails we might pass them for 3rd in the NL Central.
Nice job boys
Astros win!
