Sure, our chances of making the playoffs may be at .1%, but we've got the Cards right in front of us. Brian Moehler, the recipient of a new contract makes his 21st start of the season. Opposing him has been the surprising Braden Looper, who hopes to cash in on an even more impressive 2008 than Moehler has had. The Cardinals may be short on talent compared to most playoff contenders, but rest assured, this team won't do anything to beat themselves...oh wait, they did exactly that last night (thank you, Mr. Glaus). Don't expect that again tonight, however. This is a team that isn't just trying to win as many as they can. St. Louis still has an outside shot at the post season, so their best effort should be forthcoming tonight.

He was too excited about his new contract.

Cards must have just signed Looper for 5 million. :p

That is one of the most chicken sh$t calls I've ever seen.

That wasn’t even close to being caught. And the umpire is too afraid of being proven wrong to ask his fellow umpires for help. I hope that the league office has something to say about this. The replay speaks for itself.

Real Bad Call and Cooper tossed

Quintero hit to right – BALL BOUNCED – Right fielder caught ball on semi-short hop. Ump says it was caught. Pence doubled of easiy at first.

Theball clearly bounced. Umpire refused todiscuss with other umpires. Cooper explains the ump is blind and a jerk. Ump tosses Coop.

And did you notice Schumaker's reaction too....

He knew he didn’t catch it, and everything he did indicates that he was making the plays one would make after failing to catch the ball.

Men of Genius

The two men who do the Real Men of Genius commercials are at Minute Maid Park tonight being interviewed on television. They’ve done over 200 “salutes.”

They did a live salute to the Astros Mascot. Funny!

Assuming we win this game...

Do you realize we will have a 20-9 August with 1 more game to play?
That also makes us 26-15 since the All Star break. That’s a .634 winning percentage — which is a little better than Chicago has been playing all year.

Mayhap we actually have a good team now that some of the dead weight is gone/out of the line-up (Bourn, Towles, Borkowski, Villareal, Cruz Jr., etc)

by entropic soul on Aug 30, 2008 7:53 PM CDT   0 recs

Won't Bourn be getting more starts in September?

Why isn’t he getting starts now? Are they trying to field the best line-up since they’re playing a team with playoff hopes?

by mokulen on Aug 30, 2008 7:58 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Solid job by Moehler

I thought he’d give up 10 runs

by mokulen on Aug 30, 2008 8:13 PM CDT   0 recs

Brian Moehler

After that terrible first inning I figured Moehler was doomed to a short outing.

But he went six solid innings, holding the Cardinals scoreless since the Ankiel’s homerun in the first.

Byrdak relieves him in the seventh.

by entropic soul on Aug 30, 2008 8:25 PM CDT   0 recs

This reminds me...

Does anyone notice how Pujols always bends down at his waist and ties his shoes when an Astro hits a home run?

Hawkins continues his scoreless streak.

On one of the Astros’ post-game shows last week, Hawkins was interviewed and when he was asked about the scoreless streak, he emphatically said he didn’t want to talk about it. Then he explained that his father had called recently and started to say something about his scoreless streak and he hung up on him. Hawkins said he would prefer to think about each game situation without the scoreless streak in the back of his mind. Though he didn’t use the word “jinx,” clearly he is worried about jinxing himself.

by clack on Aug 30, 2008 8:46 PM CDT   0 recs

I've refused to talk

about some things in my life recently for the same reason. I understand Hawkins’ thinking.

Q gets a hit.

He’s been having a nice August too… well, relatively nice anyway. Batting about .260 on the month. Nice average to go along with the D.

by entropic soul on Aug 30, 2008 8:54 PM CDT   0 recs

He was pretty awful in AAA this year

I wonder if he was sulking from being sent down twice.

by mokulen on Aug 30, 2008 9:02 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

He's a free agent this winter

I’ve assumed he’d return to the Astros next year. I still think he will but there’s a possibilty he may go elsewhere.

Justice (I think) said he cried when he got sent down after Spring Training :(

Hopefully he will have a solid place on the team next year as either a back-up or starter as has been the last couple of months.

Miguel Tejada will NOT play winter ball

I see this as positive. I think a lot of his probelms is araesult of too much baseball – no time to recuperate.

Which means Brian Moehler

Is now the second Astro to 10 wins this year behind Roy, despite only having 21 starts. A pitcher who gets a win in half of his starts has how many wins by the end of the season? About 17?
