New York Mets at Houston Astros, Aug 3, 2008 1:05 PM CDT
Not quite the match up that we had from last night... but still an important match up at least on an Ed Wade/Astros standpoint. Actually, the game probably means more to the Mets since they would be in 1st place in their division if not for 2 straight losses to the Astros.
As you can see from the stats above(these are only since with Houston), Wolf wasn't exactly dominant in his first appearance as an Astro... maybe he was nervous pitching in a closed-roof stadium... or maybe it's just that he's not a good pitcher away from PetCo Park. I guess we'll see today aye? Not that Wofl having a bad outing today will really prove that he's not a good pitcher... but it will give a little more insight as to what he can do when pitching at hitter friendly Minute Maid Park.
If Wolf continues to struggle at MMP (or away from PetCo for that matter) for the rest of the season, then it will put yet another mark on Ed Wade's record as Astros GM.
I hope he does well... I really do... I would love for Wade to start making good moves and turn out to be a great GM and the savior for the Astros organization... We'll see...
Rough series for Aaron Heilman as he took losses in both of the games in the series so far... Let's go for the trifecta!
Good Lineup!!!

These are "for what it's worth stats".....
Wolf career ERA at MMP is 4.76 with a 1.32 ERA and 5 HR in 23 IP. (He has given up quite a few homers to the Astros at the Juice Box.)
Wolf career ERA against the Astros is quite good. 3.76 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and .222 BAA.
Wolf has a good career ERA against the Mets. 3.35 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, .240 BAA.
Wolf has already pitched once this year against the Mets and it was a beauty. He got the win, going 7.0 IP, allowing 1 H and 1 R, with 2 BB and 2 K.
By the way, Stros Bros, I’m sure you do want to see Wolf pitch well…since I just noticed that he is on your fantasy team. :)
FWIW stats on Oliver Perez...
Without looking at stats, I know almost immediately that Perez has been an Astros-Killer. I can remember too many games in which he has dominated the Astros, including a gem in 2004 against a good hitting Astros lineup.
Perez vs. Astros, 2.76 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, BAA below .200.
If it’s any consolation, Perez has started only one game at MMP (surprising), and he was rocked, going only 5.1 IP, giving up 4 HRs to the Astros, and posting an ERA for the game above 11.
This season, Oliver Perez has been almost impossible for LHB to hit. Lefthanders are batting about .150 against Perez with a microscopic WHIP. That is bad news for Erstad, who was complaining (well, that is probably too strong a word) last night that he has faced a lot of LHB lately, but normally doesn’t see them much. If Bourn was in the lineup against a LHB, that would be even worse. Unfortunately, Loretta (who hits lefties well) is out of the lineup because he is still dinged up from last night’s action. Wiggy will be in the lineup, and he normally hits LHP well. Pence and Lee also hit LHP well. But, in Pence’s case, he has problems against the slider….and Perez has an exceptional slider.
It doesn't take
a long fly ball to left field to be a home run here :)
Nah, I don’t know… I’ll try to find out though.
Go 'Stros!
Eyeballing Oliver Perez's HRs allowed over the last couple of years....
it appears that roughly 60% of the HRs are to LF or LF-CF. The remainder to CF, RF-CF, or RF.
Over the last 7 days
Matsui is hitting .347 with a 1.101 OPS.
Not too bad for a light hitting 2nd basemen.

Hey, I liked him since day one with us. :)

And that is bases loaded for Wolf with one out.
With Nick Evans. Too bad it’s only the 4th. Otherwise I would say it’s time for right handed specialist LaTroy Hawkins!
No Problem
Struck him out on called strike three (pitch looked low)

We can save Hawkins for Wright later on. :p

Wiggy Wiggy Wiggy!
Doubles….
JD mentions right before the pitch “Better keep it down”, well Perez doesn’t and Wigginton drives it to the fence in left for a double.

Astros up 3-0
Erstad bloops one into left field, the left fielder[Evans] slips when trying to come in and allows the ball to drop in front of him, scoring Pence from 2nd.

I've told six people already his classic line from Friday's game
When Moeller struck out to go “0 for the season” and looked angry about it, Brownie said he looked like he thought he was going to get a hit.
JD said, “He’s as optimistic as an accordian player with business cards.”

I hope bad karma does happen the rest of the game because of our jolly attitude.
(As I type this the Mets load the bases)

Wolf's curveball
is confusing alot of hitters today… I wasn’t at the TV, but I heard it made Delgado bail out earlier.

Berkman's AB earlier this inning...
...prompted me to look up his current stats. There’s been some talk about his recent home run drought, and some have speculated that it’s due to the fact that his early season dominance has caused pitchers to never really give him anything to hit.
His OBP is a ridiculous .442. I hadn’t realized that from 2001-2006, he finished each season with a .400+ OBP. In 2007, he “only” posted .386.
Right now, he’s on pace to walk 99 times, which is par for the course for the last four years or so.
His rate stats right now look a lot like his 2001 season.
2001: .331 / .430 / .620 (AVG/OBP/SLG)
2008: .340 / .442 / .615
One big difference…intentional walks….in all of 2001, he only received 5 IBBs. This year, which is only 2/3 over, he’s already received 13.
Wolf looks like he's done
Sampson probably coming in.
Wolf Stats
5 innings, 6 hits, 3 Walks, 7 K’s and 0 ER
Not too shabby! Now let’s add a W to that.
Go 'Stros!
5-8 doing it again today
6 for 8 with 4 RBI’s and 4 runs scored.
1-4 hitters are 1-11 with no RBI’s and no runs scored.

I haven't checkout out the fantasy league in awhile.
All the forgetting to switch pitchers got on my nerves. :p

Yep
should be able to set it up to automatically activate a pitcher who is scheduled to pitch ;)

That's where I was last time i checked a few weeks ago.
Down way too many points to even think about moving up much at all without many good pitchers.

Yea
but then you have to research and find out who’s pitching when…
That’s too much work :)

Nice play by Tejada
That ball took a weird 1st bounce… Tejada bare hands it and fires to 1st to get Evans by a step or 2
Go 'Stros!
Lee drives one off the wall in left
and then gets thrown out going for 2… Lee kind of loafed it out of the box…

Sampson 2 scoreless innings
Allowed a hit to Reyes, but no damage allowed…
I doubt he’ll go 3… but he probaby could after throwing just 24 pitches

Hmm.. what am I thinking of then?
Did we shut someone out recently?

On the Mets' blog game thread yesterday...
I noticed that Mets’ fans are pretty negative on Newhan, who played for the Mets last year. They seemed to think that it’s crazy that any teams think he belongs in the majors. Someone suggested that he isn’t even good enough for AAA.
He hasn't done anything for us..
I’m not sure why he’s here either. We have enough utility infielders as it is…

Sheets pitched today
Frequent topic of conversation is whether the Brewers resign CC or Sheets. Talk radio guy who covers the team, Sparky, said that everyone close to Ben that he has talked to says he’d like to end up in Atlanta or Houston.
How’s that for a giant FWIW?
I like it.
Would like Sheets to sign with Houston. He’s good and it seems like it would be pretty easy to get him to come here.
by entropic soul on Aug 3, 2008 3:40 PM CDT up reply actions
Sheets to Houston? I like it.
Oswalt is friends with Sheets, from their Olympic team days, and indicated he would gladly try to persuade Sheets to come to Houston if the possibility arises.
Are the Astros really going to spend that much
on one pitcher and for how many years?
I'd say yes
And I don’t think 5 years would be out of reach…
Maybe 5 years, 85 million would do it… maybe…I think the Astros payroll is around 84 million right now.. so that would put them just above the 100 million mark
Go 'Stros!
I suspect that the Astros will bid some big money on a pitcher...
this off-season. Whether that is enough to meet the market price of Sheets, I don’t know.
I am optimistic we can sign him.
There are many things in our favor.

Too many baserunners but bottom line no runs allowed. Would have been nice to get one or two more innings. Overall though a positive outing for him.

SWEEP
Let’s sweep the Cubs next!
7-2 agianst winning teams since the ASB
2-4 against losing teams teams (Reds and Pirates)
9-6 overall.
Damn the Pirates!!!
This sweep has to be devastating for the Mets.
Not just because a worse record team did it, either. The way they lost game 2 was so absurd and kooky, the Mets seemed to be shell shocked in this game.
In an earlier thread to open the series, I took a trip down memory lane to recall the Astros’ sweep of the “Miracle Mets” in August, 1969. At the time, I didn’t want to suggest the possibility of a sweep for this series. But it happened.
Also, depending on what the Phillies do tonight
It could leave them 3 games out of 1st place.
