If pitching match ups mean anything, then this game should be a pretty high scoring game. You're putting together 2 pitchers with 5+ ERA's, high WHIP and allow quite a few home runs... but, both pitchers pitched pretty well in their last outings.
Aaron Harang pitched 6 innings of shut out ball against the Rockies on 8/22/08 earning his 4th win of the season. Backe pitched 7 innings on 8/23/08 allowing 3 runs against the Mets, earning his 8th win of the season.
Another similarity between the two is that they were both totally destroyed in their outings before that. In Harang's 2nd to last outing, he last just 3 1/3 innings while allowing 8 earned runs. Backe in his 2nd to last outing went 5 2/3 innings while giving up 11 earned runs.
Which pitchers will we see?
This is the final game in a 3 game series between the Reds and the Astros and will determine the winner of the series as the Reds won the 1st game 2-1 and the Astros took the 2nd 4-1.
The Astros sit 16 games back in the NL Central and 10 games back in the Wild Card. If the Wild Card leading Brewers play just .517(29 games, therefore impossible to play .500) ball for the rest of the season, they will end up with 92 wins on the season. The Astros will have to go 25-4 to match that record.

Chris Dickerson???
The ESPN preview thing says the player most likely to hit a homerun today is Chris Dickerson, Reds left fielder and lead off hitter, who has 3 homeruns all season.
I blinked twice or thrice when I read that,.

It'd be nice if Tejada got on base every once and again
That way Lance would drive someone in. Wiggy continues his sizzling.
A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Top o' the 2nd
Backe gets the Reds in order, with a minimum of pitches.

see, if you were in Europe...
this would be night game – and like myself, you could be home from work watching! (Though I miss seeing the night games live! thank goodness for mlb.tv!)
But we'd be in Europe

Europe sounds more exotic than
Birmingham, Alabama (but I can watch night games, no problem)

I have to come back...
(to San Francisco) soon, but at least I’ll make it back for play-offs and football season!
You missed Wiggy's blast to Crawford boxes
Berkman’s hustling for a double
A slick double play in the first
and an efficient Brandon Backe on the mound
That’s all

No
I like him. He’s steady. I don’t think he can carry the load all season by himself though. My worry is that a backup by defintion is not as good as Q. Astros need a second catcher at least as good as him.

I wonder
If it really did just take him time to get his arm and mechanics to come around post Tommy-John.

Pence started off 3-0
then swung at and missed a pitch over the plate and then swung at and missed 2 straight bad balls low..
Go 'Stros!

5th inning meltdown deferred until top of the 7th
Backe is really rolling. Of course Quintero’s pick off could’ve headed off what could’ve been a 6th inning meltdown.

Brocail
has very nice handwriting – like we all learned to write cursive in elementary school.
Yes, not so much baseball related, but I found it interesting to learn… (it being the Brocail fact, not cursive)
JD and Brownie have been talking about Albert Pujols' blow up...
in the Brewers game. Brewers’ reliever was too demonstrative getting the third out with bases loaded and Pujols on deck. Pujols apparently went wild. I haven’t seen any articles yet.
But does it seem that Pujols is too tightly wound? It’s not like this is the first incident for him. And, by the way, he is one to be complaining about demonstrative acts, given his bat flippage, which even teammate Scott Rolen said was too much.
it really was a show
It included Pujols striding toward the Brewers pitcher yelling and pointing his bat at him. Earlier Glaus had a nice tantrum over a strike call in the middle of the strike zone. Mather had a little helmet slam and Molina was trash talking. Now they claim to be “awoken.” And hey, they’re headed your way ;-)
Oh, and the ever so classy LaRussa threw at Braun’s injured ribs, probably because Parra pitched Pujols high and tight. Maybe it was because he smacked around Cards pitching this year or maybe its because the season series ended up 10-5, Brewers.
sounds like vintage LaRussa...he likes to create "incidents" and play beanball...
and then later complain about how other teams throw at his batters even though he NEVER does that.
Better than I gave him credit for.
I guess he can come back next year. :p

I returned to my office expecting to catch the last two innings or so and instead I see Quintero being interviewed.
