The Astros have averaged 4 runs per game against the Mets this series while allowing the Mets to score just 3 runs per game...  seems we should have won both games... but unfortunately, all 8 runs we've scored this series came in yesterday's 8-3 winner.  One thing that has been constant in this series is the Astros pitching... starting with the complete game, 3 run outing by Roy Oswalt on Friday and then the 7 inning 3 run outing by Brandon Backe yesterday, the pitching has been good.  Unfortunately, the offense has been less predictable.  Hopefully we didn't use up all of the offense yesterday.

Today we send Randy Wolf to the hill against Oliver Perez.  Wolf has been... okay since joining the Astros.  His Astros career would look much better had he not given up 6 runs over 4 innings the last time he went out.  One thing Wolf has managed to do is keep the ball in the park, allowing just 2 home runs over 26 1/3 innings pitched as an Astro.

Perez has faced the Astros just once this season and earned a loss by pitching 6 innings and allowing 4 earned runs.  Last time out, Perez went 6 1/3 innings allowing 3 runs and earned a no decision.

reggie abercrombie batting leadoff

Im in San Antonio, so I cant watch the game, but knowing that he’s leading off makes me sort of happy because I wont develop an ulcer this afternoon

by HighLeveragePerformer on Aug 24, 2008 12:18 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

by doing that

he’s justified his place in the lineup today. nice work

by HighLeveragePerformer on Aug 24, 2008 12:19 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

perhaps not first

but at least if he goes 0/4 at the plate, he’s taken an out away from the Mets. Would Erstad or Bourn have made the play, I didn’t see the throw?

by HighLeveragePerformer on Aug 24, 2008 12:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe..

I think it would have at least been a close play with either Erstad or Bourn… maybe not in time, but close.

Abercrombie’s throw beat him easily

With the Beltran home run

you could say not only did he save an out… he saved a run

Nice play by Loretta

to save a run or 2 in the 3rd..

Astros now down 3-0 after Wolf loaded the bases(via IBB) and then walked in a run

That play was sick.

Maybe that’s why he hit the bomb?

I like that move by Wiggy. Kind of funny, but good idea.

Wigginton swung and missed on strike 3 but the pitch was wild and scooted away from the catcher. Wiggy ran hard to 1st base and as he did it, he criss-crossed back and forth like a destroyer trying to evade a torpedo. He was obviously trying to distract the 1st baseman or at least make the throw by the catcher more difficult. Good job, Wiggy.

I just noticed that Berkman isn't playing today.

(I know, it shows that I haven’t been concentrating on the game.) Does it seem like poor timing for a Berkman rest day….on the day after he seemed to break out of his power slump?

by clack on Aug 24, 2008 1:56 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Every day is bad day to rest him... ;)

but yes… I mean we just had an off day earlier in the week… why does he need a day off?

Blum hit what seemed like a certain HR off the bat.

But it bounced just off the top of the wall for a double. And Pence showed just horrible base running. Anybody on first base should be able to score on that hit. On replay, it appears that Pence slowed down to watch the ball. J.D. says, “Pence needs to be picking up his 3d base coach…not looking out in the outfield.”

Pence eventually scores on a single. Blum is out trying to score from 2d base.

by clack on Aug 24, 2008 2:10 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Blum shouldn't have been sent on that hit, by the way.

J.D. says that Romero probably would like that decision over again. The catcher had the ball when Blum was 2/3 down the baseline. Blum did the only thing he could….try to barrel into the catcher, sending both sprawling, but the catcher held onto the ball.

by clack on Aug 24, 2008 2:26 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

yep

you can’t score on that ball with average or lower speed…. Blum definitely falls in that category.

Pinch hitters this inning

Blum
Newhan
Bourn

Meanwhile Berkman sits on the bench

BUT . . . all three reach base ! Double – single – walk

Sampson coming in for inning2

the Bullpen hasn’t exactly been taxed this series… Sampson is much better as a 1 inning guy… putting him in for multiple innings is just setting him up to fail. Sampson has yet to give up a run this season when only pitching 1 inning.

but Sampson prevails

and gets all 3 out in his 2nd inning pitched

According to fangraphs

Chris Sampson has done more to help the Astros win this game than any other Astro (Highest impact player is Carlos Beltran of the Mets)

As much as we criticized the Hawkins acquisition...

I have to admit he has been damned good in his stint with the Astros. What I didn’t know about Hawkins when the Astros picked him up….despite his age, he can still throw the fastball in the mid- to high 90’s.

Yep

He’s been very good… I think I would like to have him back next season.

spotless inning for Hawkins.

I was sort of worried that he was facing 2 LHB in that inning. But Ausmus went out to talk with him before the first LH, and Hawkins relied heavily on throwing curveballs. He got a fly out on the first LHB. He couldn’t get strike calls on his curveball against the second LHB, but then came inside with his FB and got a broken bat grounder.

I had the same thoughts too.

I can’t believe he got through that inning and for maple bats.

My college XC coach (the one semester I did it)

Made us do that hot yoga crap. Where they add steam to the room and make it 101 degrees. I wanted to strangle the instructor. That stuff is miserable.
