Astros Claim Jose Castillo Off Waivers

The Astros claimed Jose Castillo off waivers from the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday, and the 27-year-old infielder will join the club at Shea Stadium on Friday for the start of a four-game series against the New York Mets.

"We just felt that at this point with (Ty) Wigginton playing a lot of outfield and (Kazuo) Matsui down — if we had a chance to get this guy he'd give us another experienced infielder — and it gives (Cecil Cooper) a lot more flexibility," general manager Ed Wade.

Castillo, who will be under the Astros' control as an arbitration-eligible player this winter, is a career .253 hitter batting .244 with 28 doubles, 35 RBIs and six home runs this season.

My thoughts.... who cares?  He does about as much for me as Mark Loretta and Geoff Blum do for me.  I don't think it was a move that was needed to be made since we have other options and the team isn't exactly contending for a playoff spot... but it's not like we're giving a whole lot up for him.

It doesn't hurt the team...

Don't we have too many infielders already?

We need an OUTFIELDER!! (Preferably one who does ground into play off hope dashing double plays)

DOESN'T, I mean.

We already have one who does.

J.R House & Newhan

J. R . House goes back to Round Rock.

How does this affect Newhan? Can’t be good.

I like the pick up.

Castillo has alway been viewed as a guy who had good talent but never played up to his potential. My recollection is that he has certainly hurt the Astros in the past. He is only 27 years old, and he provides protection in the future. At the least, he is a younger guy who can perform the reserve roles of guys like Loretta or Blum. I like him on the team better than either Newhan or House. He is much younger than Newhan, and should be a better hitter. He likely will hit better than House, but in any event, he can field several positions, whereas House has trouble fielding any positions.

As for outfield help, my recollection is that the Pirates played Castillo in LF against the Astros at times.

so Cot's says

Castillo only had 4.00 years of service time coming into this year. if he’s been DFA’d, he should have less than a full year of service time this year, so does that mean we’d control him for two more seasons if we wanted to? looking at his stats though, he’s not a very exciting acquisition. career OBP below .300? career OPS of .675? he does play all over the infield.

at least we didn’t give anything up for him.

he was mis-cast as a 3d baseman by the Giants, because his bat isn't good enough for...

that position. His ceiling might be a low or mid- .700’s OPS (not that he has met his potential), which would be typical for a middle infielder. He always had the reputation of great potential as a exceptional glove man in the infield. I think the Pirates felt that he was prone to spectacular plays on difficult balls but sometimes lost his concentration on easy plays. I recall some of the sparkling plays against the Astros. It seems like the question is whether he can become more consistent on defense, and if he can, he would be an excellent fielder.

i like it

I think it is a good pick up…Kaz out and Wiggy in Left, the stros have lost 2 INF so Castillo was needed and he could play the left side of the field and 2b…now someone said we dont need a guy to GIDP…well Miguel Tejada seems to GIDP every single game, its ridiculous!

The only way this makes sense is if we're offering Loretta arbitration.

Last year Mark was a class B free agent. Offering him arb will net us a supplemental pick if he declines and signs with another team. If Loretta accepts arbitration again, then we can just DFA or cut Castillo. If he leaves, then we can field Castillo behind Kazuo.

I'm not even sure that Loretta will play another season.

Someone mentioned on another board that he has talked about retirement. I think the Astros may offer him arbitration if he doesn’t retire, and that makes sense (assuming he is a Type B FA). But, then again, I’m not sure that they will, given that Wade may feel that Loretta was “forced on him” last year. (It seems apparent that Wade was hoping Loretta would reject the arbitration offer last year.) Blum is likely to be back, because his second year supposedly will be guranteed based on contract targets.

Wade’s quotes indicate that he thinks Castillo could be a starting quality infielder next year. I’m not sure what to make of that. Maybe it gives him the option of trading Matsui or Tejada. I’m not saying I am in favor of that…just trying to figure out why he would say that.

I think it's best just to ignore what GMs say publicly.

He probably just saying what he feels will make his players and the media happy. If he says “Yeah, I grabbed him because we’re hoping Loretta will sign with another team, but we think he’s just another below-average infielder,” then nobody is going to be happy.

If he simply says, “I think this is another great acquisition for the Astros,” then people might think he’s stupid, but they’re not going to think he’s trying to cut payroll or something.

The only way to judge GMs is by their actions. Billy Beane has made statements about how important team defense is in the past, and we all know he doesn’t care one bit about defense. It’s just a front for the media.

And Loretta will be 37 next year. It’s not as if he’s facing significant range issues in the field (at least at 2B), and he’s actually had a better offensive season this year. He’s played a lot less, but he’s put up better numbers. So he might stay a Type B FA. And he might sign somewhere else.
