Astros Lose 2 of 3 to Brewers - Kiss Any Chance of the Playoffs Goodbye?
Okay don't get me wrong here... but it's not exactly like the Astros had a good chance to make the playoffs anyways... but one thing I can tell you for sure is that, losing 2 straight series... isn't the way to the promised land.
With that being said... technically the Astros still have a chance to make the playoffs... A lot of people are saying that if the Astros had any hope of making the playoffs, that they needed to AT LEAST win 2 of 3 from the Brewers and better yet, sweep the 3 game series... but honestly... Losing 2 of 3 against the Diamondbacks and then coming back and losing 2 of 3 to the Brewers... didn't really put the Astros in much worse of a position than they were... let say a week ago. Let's face it, the Astros chances of making the playoffs a week ago were slim to none at best... so it can't get much worse.
Anyways... Yes, we sucked in the last 2 series and yes we're probably not going to make the playoffs... But let's look on the bright side... We could be the Tampa Bay Rays.. wait.. Doh, they are good this year... scratch that. With the loss today, the Astros are back to being 8 1/2 games out of the Wild Card Race...
I'm still an optimist... not an eternal optimist... scratch that... I'm not an optimist... I'm a realist... and the reality is... a 4 game sweep of the Mets and a 4 game losing streak for the Brewers could happen... I doubt it will... but it could. And if that did by some chance happen... we could be 4 1/2 games behind the Brewers.
So basically what I'm saying is... just because it's more than likely not going to happen. Don't give up on the team. Until the day comes(and it's coming....) that we're mathematically eliminated... Don't give up!

That was so inspiring.
Not.
Come on, Bro. If we were going to give up on the team, we wouldn’t be here in the first place.

we now
need to go 26-9 in our last 35 to get to 90 wins. in the meantime, Milwaukee would have to go 17-17 or worse, and St. Louis would have to go 19-14 or worse, assuming there aren’t multiple 90-win teams in the East or West, which is looking unlikely, although not as unlikely as Houston re-entering the wild card race.
by the sound of it, September callups aren’t going to be an audition time for young players from AA or anything, so it’s not like i’m looking for the brass to throw in the towel. we might as well keep hoping and praying that the unthinkable happens. i’m certainly not holding my breath though.
in a month and a half, we go into the long winter jones for the spring, so we might as well enjoy what we’ve got while it lasts.

Well...6.5 game back is a lot different than 8.5 game back...
so, I do think that losing the Brewers’ series made a significant difference in the Astros’ chances of a WC berth. However, I agree that the Astros continue to have a remote chance at contending for the WC, and we might as well watch and hope for the best.

Gave up a long time ago
My tombstone went up sometime in late June, but I still like to watch the Astros. Win or lose, they are an entertaining team with likable players. Generations of Cubs fans filled the bleachers at Wrigley Field, not because the Cubs were headed to the playoffs, but because they loved the team. Astros fans need to remember that winning is not everything and that if you are only satisfied with a World Series championship, you are in for a world of disappointment. So let’s just relax and enjoy the remaining games. Soon enough there will be no baseball at all.
Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you're a mile away AND you have their shoes.

I'm with Caradoc
There’s nothing wrong with giving up hope or being pissed at your home town team for under-performing and making bad decisions. I’m not saying the Astros can’t or won’t make the playoffs, but it’s HIGHLY improbable. That said, I still tune in, I root for the wins, I scream at the mistakes. I high five everyone in close proximity at brilliant performances, but I know that I’m simply enjoying the last six weeks of Astros baseball.
A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.
