New York Mets at Houston Astros, Aug 2, 2008 6:05 PM CDT

No Bourn again today... It also looks like Loretta's Grand Slam from last night got him a start at 3rd. This will be Loretta's first start since July 23rd in which he started at short stop against the Pirates. Most of the playing time at 3rd this season has been between Wigginton and Blum. I can't remember the last time Loretta started at 3rd base this season, but I can tell you that he's only started there 7 times before tonight.
The big storyline of tonight is obviously the pitching match up. Roy Oswalt against Johan Santana. Santana made comments before the season started that he was looking to win the Cy Young this year... he hasn't been the best pitcher so far; but he has been in the top 10. Hopefully Roy O can put him in his place tonight.

An ex-Astros vs. a current Astros pitcher.
As most of you know, Santana was in the Astros’ system, having come up through the Astros’ Venezuelan academy, but was lost to the Rule 5 draft. Santana and Oswalt were on the same pitching staff at A-ball in the Astros’ system.
Maybe it isn't good to play Loretta at 3d base, when he hasn't played the position...
for so long this season. His error puts Reyes at 2d, who scores on a Beltran hit.
Woulda scored anyway.
Roy is no Brian Moehler, my friend. :p

Braves have been devastated by injuries this year.
I expected them to be a good contender for the NL East.
Me as well...
I figured it would be a battle between the Braves and Mets.
Not that I actually think the Braves were a really talented team… they are just always good ;)
Go 'Stros!
I feared that would happen
An article had him hoping he would not need it but the data indicated everyone who had this type injury had to have TJ surgery.
I’ve followed Tim Hudson since his days at Midland in Texas League.

Is it just me, or does it seem that the Mets have had a lot of luck
on hits dropping in during this series.
Not a good idea to walk Santana, Roy.
JD says that he walks more than his share of walks to pitchers because he has the mentality to pitch everybody tough. Ausmus seemed irked and went out to talk with Oswalt.
Just got finished mowing the yard
Looks like things are turning around at least a little…
Hopefully me coming back to watch the game doesn’t screw that up.

How MLB.COM ticked me off
Last night I could not access MLB.TV after I got home (I had connected at work). It said blackout .I figured it was some flaw in the MLB.Com system. I could connect to the radio on MLB.com
Tonight I listened to pregame on radio then switched to MLB.TV for the game. No game – said restricted.
I called MLB.com. They gave me a long runaround before they admitted why I had the blackout page.
My credit card on file with them expired on august 1. To be sure their customers update their credit card informatin, they put on the blackout page so the customer (me) will call in to see what’s wrong!
While i was there I tried to solve another problem. When I pull up MLB.com the broadcast schedule is always August 7, 2007. I must do a few clicks to get to the current day. I wanted to start up with today’s schedule. The guy ran me through more rigamarole on my computer deleting all my cookies and who knows wha else. Finally he put me on hold for a higher level of “expert” . I was on the phone total from initial call an hour. No one ever picked up . So I hung up.
And Astros are losing!

That's pretty dumb
Under no circumstances should they black you out if you are paid in full… An e-mail that your card expired would have been enough.

My thought too
and they could do it next season. I’m paid up for the season on one lump payment back in February or March.

With 1 on and 1 out....
Hawkins will come in to face Wright. (Is Delgado after him? Is he LH? I’m too lazy to look it up right now.)
Delgado and then Tatis if it gets that far.

Yay!
Erstad is HBP.. (cause I know he wasn’t going to hit the pitch, so good thing the pitch hit him)
Santana out
Aw.. come on.. Wiggy could have taken him. Now they are going to bring in a hard throwing right hander and we know wiggy can’t hit those guys.
aawwwww
I thought it was 3 run homerun -turned into a double play!

Me too :(
Wigginton drives the ball to left field, but Murphy(rookie making his MLB debut) leaps high in the air and catches it before it bounces off the wall… then he doubles off Pence at 2nd to end the inning.
Go 'Stros!
That sucks big time.
Wiggy gave the bat flip and started a cadillac trot….so I’m sure he gets surprised when it isn’t a HR. And what the hell is Pence doing? If it’s a HR, there’s no need to get far off base….and it’s not, it is likely to get caught since it is coming straight down. That is a horrible base running play.
Matsui homers
That ’s a start

Off Topic - Any car guys/gals here?
Trying to decide whether to upgrade the K&N air filter in my 2002 Chevy S-10 4.3 to the K&N Air intake system… I can’t make up my mind if I want to spend the $300 for it.

I couldn't tell you what kind of model a car was even if i was looking at it.
(Name on the side/front, notwithstanding)

HOLY COW!!
HAHAHAH!!!!
Pence almost passes Loretta at home because Loretta stumbles, Loretta plows into the catcher and is safe with Pence right behind.
Go 'Stros!
Exciting play
I was afraid Hunter would touch Loretta on the way home.
It was a dangerous looking double slide into home. but great to watch!!!!

like a football or rugby play....
the Mets’ catcher was double teamed on the block and went out of the game.
Reminds me of Caballo and Scott last year
but crazier
Crazy slide by Loretta
definitely was going to keep Pence safe if he was out.
Pence probably hurt Loretta when he slid in, but not a whole lot he could do to avoid it(besides just completely slowing down and going in standing)
Go 'Stros!
Tie game 4-4
Astros still batting
Matsui to try to end it.

Erstad needs to take some pitches and hope we get lucky
with a passed ball or wild pitch or hit by pitch. This match up sucks and we are out of PHers
Has to be a strike
or game over!
Hopefully Erstad doesn’t go after a ball… and hopefully he doesn’t GIDP
Go 'Stros!
Game Over!!
Erstad hits a line drive to left field, Tatis dives to catch it and then throws home, but the time it took him to dive, get up and get the ball, Berkman tagged and ran home.. Nice running by Lance and way to get some wood on the ball by Erstad
Go 'Stros!
ASTROS WIN 5-4 in ten innings

Finishes like this....
...are why I pay attention to every game, regardless of the post-season odds.
that's, let's see. FOUR of FIVE series wins after the ASB.
Unfortunately, the loss was a SWEEP by the PIRATES.
I hesitate to bring this up...
the Astros have crept up to 9 games out of the WC, and 8 games in the loss column out of the WC. With the Cards losing, the Astros are starting to nip at St. Louis’ heels a bit.
