Livan Hernandez
The Twins called up Francisco Liriano and released Livan Hernandez. My question is this: if Livan Hernandez is available for league minimum salary, would you sign him? Hernandez was eating up innings in Minnesota but producing a bad ERA, 5.48, in the AL. His Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) is significantly better than his ERA, though, suggesting that his ERA may be inflated by bad luck. It is plausible that could produce a low 4's ERA in the NL, based upon his FIP and the change in leagues. I suppose part of my reluctance in signing him is that it's not clear who you would remove from the rotation, since Backe and Moehler have pitched well lately. At the least, Livan Hernandez could be pretty good depth for the rotation, in the event someone goes down.

Good Question
But I don’t know… I’m thinking if the league minimum is what he’ll get, then someone else would offer him more or he would be more inclined to sign with another team that is in a better position than us. Hernandez hasn’t been a very good pitcher since about 2005… so it’s not like he’s just having an off season. I’m saying No, we have no need for Livan Herandez.
We have enough #5 starters as it is.

I'd sign him - IF
1) He really can be had for the major league minimum
2) We could could get an option for 2009 (most likely for more than the major league minimum), and
3) He would be willing and the rules would allow him to be shuffled to and from Round Rock as needed.
If he’s still available in a week or so, that deal might look very attractive to him.
It takes more than pitching to win a pennant, but not much!

If nobody picks him up
Then I’m sure us offering him an option for next season would look good to him…
As to the going to round rock and back and all of that.. I think he’d have to clear waivers each time… and I doubt a pitcher with time served would be willing to do that… he’d probably just retire.

I'll give him an option for $50
I actually thought he’d be an alright pick up earlier this year. Shows how much I know.

Isn't his WHIP
incredibly high? That’s not good in a hitter’s park.

It's high...but not much higher than Backe's WHIP.
If his pitching stats were good, the Twins probably would have traded him to another team. I’m not really pushing the idea that much; it would be a gamble to sign him. However, his Fielding Independent Pitching stat is better than Backe’s (4.60 vs. 5.25).

My 2 cents about Livan
Livan has given up 18 bombs in only 139 and 1/3…very Oswaltian
He’s struck out less than 60 batters, and has a WHIP of 1.63- this is especially bad because once he gets guys on base, he can’t wipe the bases clean with the “pitcher’s real best friend”, the strikeout
In other words, the a pitcher has a great deal of control over the following: walks, strikeouts, pitch placement, and whether a ball ends up being a ground ball or a flyball. His high homer rate is due partially to luck, but he doesn’t help himself by being a high WHIP guy or a high Fly Ball guy.
I would vote no, but if we win tomorrow in the opener vs. the Cubs, who knows what Ed, Tal and Drayton will do…

Reportedly the Rockies won the waiver claim on Livan Hernandez.
The Astros have a slightly better record than Colorado; so if the Astros claimed him, the Rockies’ claim would have taken precedent.
