Backe blows.

Lead off walk. And the 3-0 strike prolly should have been called a ball.

Last night someone wanted Wigginton

to play all nine positions in the game (at least in the batting order). Two is a start.

In fact, he is in left . Blum tackles third base tonight.

D-Backs bat around

Second night in a row at nine Arizona batters bat in the first inning. Last night D-Backs scored only 3 runs in the first. They scored 5 tonight.

5 runs on 3 hits.

what's it at now?

I was just looking at his HR/RBI and trying to guess where they’d end up for the year. Right now he’s at 17/60 I think. Say he hits 5 more HR for the year and gets 25 more RBI he’d finish w/ a line of 22 HR and 85 RBI.

Great for a CF, for a corner outfielder, not so much.

But you’re right, his big problem is OBP (the flipside of that being huge K numbers; think he’s projected to finish w/ 120+).

Ticket to Biggio retirement game tomorrow

We interrupt the shitty start to this game to draw your attention to my craigslist posting: http://houston.craigslist.org/tix/799923130.html

Coming from Austin early tomorrow with a buddy and we’re meeting my sis at MMP. If one of you Crawfish Boxers wanted to go, I’d love to meet up at the clock tower. Gonna get there muy early.

And Backe gives up a leadoff line drive in the 3rd….

Skip Caray Broadcast Booth

I have Braves game on without the sound, I looked up at the screen. Catchign my eye wa wa ofical pacard on the all saying “Skip caray Broadcast Booth.” I wonder if the Braves have officially named the booth afer Skip Caray. That would be neat.

Astros probably would name theirs something like “Jimmy Dean Sauage Broadcast Booth.”

Did anyone see Richard Justice's column about Backe....

He was pleading with Astros management to keep Backe in the rotation next year. His argument seemed to be: you can ignore his numbers because of his fiery competitiveness. I like Backe’s competitive spirit as much as anybody. But if that alone is enough to keep a player in the rotation, Woody Williams would still be on the team. The more I see of Backe this season, the more I doubt his future as a starter.

Are any of his problems related to the surgery?

Will he be stronger and have better control next year?

Agreed.

When he came up I thought, how cool it would be if a kid pitcher who grew up as an Astros fan became an Astros star himself. Well, as much as the hometown flava makes folks want to give Backe a break, the game is about winning.

Don't Know If It Was Said On the Broadcast

—cuz I turned it off in disgust—but it should be said here that Brandon Backe is the first pitcher in Houston NL history to give up two slams in one game.

However, entropic, he is STILL better than that piece of shit Jennings.

on both points.

Last time Astros gave up two slams in one gaem, teh pitchers were Tim Redding and Chad Harville.

…and in both their cases, it seems like they were left in the game too long by their managers.

by clack on Aug 16, 2008 8:34 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Backe has now

given up 11 runs in 2 of his last 3 starts…

And he went 7 innings and only gave up 1 run last time out….

Was last time a fluke? Do you think he may be at his innings pitched limit after missing most of the last 2 seasons?

Backe has never pitched as many as 150 innings in a season… he’s going to do that this season(assuming he doesn’t hurt himself before his next outing).

Since we were discussing how long it had been since the Astros gave up 2 GS's

in a game….maybe, we can looking at it a different way (OK, I’m bored..). From Astrosdaily’s “history” section, this entry for 1969:

“Houston was the center of the world’s attention in late July as Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon. The Astros provided their own moon shots during a July 30th doubleheader in New York. Menke and Wynn belted grand slam homers in the same inning, the first time it had happened in the National League since 1890. Even the pitchers got into the act as Larry Dierker spanked a homer off Nolan Ryan and portly closer Fred Gladding got the only hit of his career.”

that Mets’ team, BTW, went on to win the World Series.

Remember the last D-Backs' series, after Michah Owens' grand slam...

Cooper made the curious “guarantee” that it would never happen again. I wonder if he will guarantee that two grand slams by one Astros’ pitcher in the same game will never happen again.
