Astros For the NL Wild Card

If the Astros are going to get back into this Wild Card chase, they need to beat bad teams... well, they did that against the Reds, sweeping the 4 game series and need to do that again this week, starting with a 4 game series against the Giants.  A lot of people think the Astros have no chance to get back into the Wild Card... I am one to disagree with that assessment.  (don't get me wrong... it's a long shot at best)The Astros have 45 games left this season and sit 8 1/2 games out of the Wild Card race...  The Brewers are 8 1/2 games ahead of us and the Cardinals are 5 1/2 games ahead of us.  I am pretty confident that when all things are said and done... we are at least ahead of the Cardinals.  Now the Brewers on the other hand...  that's going to be a tough one.

Now for the Astros gaining the Wild Card Crown...  like I said, 45 games which equals to about 7 more weeks of baseball.  Let's simplify this some... 7 weeks, 8 1/2 games behind... that's just over 1 game / week that we need to gain on the Brewers to get in a race for the Wild Card. Shouldn't be too hard right?...  right??  Well... we'll see.  The Astros have been playing very good baseball lately(8-2 out of the last 10), but then again... the Brewers have as well(8-2 out of the last 10).  But stranger things have happened... The Astros could continue to stay hot and win another 4-5 games in a row and the Brewers could hit a drought and lose 4 or 5 in a row... all it would take is one bad stretch for them, and a good stretch for us and we could be back in this.

The Brewers start a 3 game series tomorrow(they beat the Nat's today to finish a 4 game sweep) in San Diego after just sweeping the Nationals out of town in a 4 game series.  The Astros start a 4 game series tonight at home against the Giants, after just going into Cincy and sweeping the Reds in a 4 game series.  After the Padres, the Brewers have a 3 game series against the Dodgers and then go home to face us in a 3 game series. The Dodgers are much better now than they have been all season(the Manny Ramirez factor) and I'm calling for the Dodgers to win the NL west...  so I think the Dodgers have a very good chance at beating the Brewers 2 out of 3 games.  The Astros should be able to at least win the next 2 series(I consider the Astros a better team than the D-backs)... So out of the next 7 games for the Astros, I expect us to come out of it with at least 5-2 record.  I think the Brewers will win the series against the Padres(winning 2 out of 3) and then lose the series against the dodgers(winning 1 of 3).  That puts the Astros with a 5-2 record in the 7 games before facing the Brewers, and the brewers at a 4-3 record in the last 7 games before facing us.

That would be 1 game off the 8 1/2 that the Astros need to make up with the Brewers...  1 Week... 1 game off the lead... that's about all it's going to take for us to get back into this.

Pretty simple aye?

your confidence is greater than mine RE: cards

it’s been killing me all year that they’ve been around 10+ games over .500, but i’ve come to accept that at least for now they’re for real.

I think that success is somewhat a fluke, given career years from ludwick, schumaker, wellenmeyer, lohse. i hope they sign some of those guys to bad contracts that will hopefully weigh them down.

however, as much as I’d love to see it, I don’t foresee them having a crash and us having a run that would allow us to pass.

You may be able to

blame my optimism on my lack of sleep, exhaustion, and about 2 liters of Dr. Pepper… :)

truer words have never been spoken

I made extra sure during my tour of the juice box to have my picture taken in front of the DP sign:

It has fueled many nights of SB Nation development. Long live Dr. Pepper.

also

we’ve had a nice run over the past 40ish games (numbers are off the top of my head), but it seems to me that it’s been borne along on the back of some above average performances like our earlier run this year was. Before it was Berkman’s outrageously awesome May. Now it’s Carlos’ excellent June & July.

Unfortunately Carlos’ run is at an end and while I expect Puma to come on stronger, asking for another may would be asking a whole lot.

by lnewcomer on Aug 11, 2008 6:00 PM CDT   0 recs

If we still had Carlos, maybe.

If the Brewers play .500 baseball over the last 45 games though, they’d win 22 or 23, losing the either 22 or 23. So if we want to beat them, we have to win 9 games more than that. That’d would mean we’d have to go 31-14 or 32-13. .689 or .711 winning percentage over a 45 game period. Down a slugger, I just don’t see where that is going to come from, given that we can’t ever tell what our starting pitching will provide.

Stranger things have happened, but they usually happen to teams with more talent.

A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Mentioning the loss of Lee

didn’t help my argument, so I left it out :)

Some numbers to think about

http://www.baseball-reference.com/pi/tgl.cgi?share=1&team=HOU&year=2008&t=b#73:117:sum

That’s a link to our last 45 games. We’re 25-20 in that span. Inewcomer correctly mentioned that we’ve played some pretty good baseball in that time. We have indeed. .556 winning percentages are nothing to scoff at, but we’re going to need some kind of performance to find six or seven more games in our last 45. If the Astros aren’t willing to budge on Bonds, I don’t see how we’re going to be able to create that kind of a “spark” with what we have on the field.

you have to include the" :177:sum" at the end there

I don’t know why the link won’t work right, sorry.

Thank you. That’s amazing.

Fun to dream about, but...

1) Anybody remember the St. Louis Cardinals? We’d have to catch them too.
2) ESPN and BP have the Astros chances (as of today) of making the WC at 7 in 1000 and their chances of winning the division at 1 in 1000.

Stranger things have happened … but don’t bet the mortgage on it!

Bro, you are high

What are you spiking that DP with? I agreed with DQuail’s post about the ‘Stros being lucky to be as close as they are.

I wish it we had a shot, but don’t believe we do.

On the other hand, if we make it to the playoffs, I will buy you a case of Dr. Pepper.

Oswalt v. Lincecum today...

You would think if Backe can hold the Giants to 1 run, Roy can hold them to none. That’s what we are gonna need tonight.

by entropic soul on Aug 12, 2008 1:50 PM CDT   0 recs

I agree with Stros Bros.

Astros are a long shot for the WC, but they are in contention for it. Two weeks ago, saying they are in contention for the WC was close to irrational, and it’s interesting that in the short period since then the Astros’ position has improved enough that it’s not outside of reason to suggest that they have a chance, albeit not a real good one. I have been saying all year that the Astros are fundamentally a .500 team and the chances are good that they would have a record in that range. So, I’m not suprised that they have reached .500, and it’s not likely that they will surpass that by a lot. But, having reached .500, they have put themselves within one big winning streak of possibly getting in the playoffs. Is it likely? No, but it’s not something that would be shocking if it occurred. All it takes is for Berkman or Erstad or Tejada to get extremely hot, and the Astros won’t miss Lee that much. Again, not probable, but not earth shattering possibilities either.

Not Earth Shattering...

It would be one of the greatest come backs (statistically of all time).

2004 Astros...

On Aug. 14, the team was 19.5 games behind St. Louis and 8 games behind Chicago in the WC race. At 4 games below .500, the Astros had 5 teams ahead of them in the WC race. The Astros went 36-10 from Aug. 15 – Oct. 3 to take the WC on the final day of the season. I’ve got to say, though, that the Rockies’ late season surge last season probably was more impressive.

Sleepless in Seattle

“I’ll have whatever you guys are having!”

Could you please give me the specific names of the compounds and fluids you are ingesting that have led you to this insanity?

Leaving those pesky Cardinals out of the picture, if Milwaukee plays .500 ball the rest of the way, Houston will have to play better than .700 ball to overtake them.

I called the Commissioner’s office this morning and begged them for over an hour, but they aren’t going to let the Astros play the rest of their games against the Reds and the Giants. Damn!

It takes more than pitching to win a pennant, but not much!

Brewers are over- performing their Pythag as much as the Astros...

why is it unreasonable to say that they could fall apart? I’m not saying it’s likely…just saying it is certainly possible. Like in 2004, when the Cubs just plain blew an apparent insurmountable WC lead in the last week. Or the way the Padres blew their apparent cinched WC last year in the last week. Astros probably have to sweep their 6 games remaining games against the Brewers and Cards….improbable, sure, but it’s the kind of thing which the Astros did during the stretch winning streaks in 04 and 06. That’s why baseball is a funny game.
