Justice: Drayton should sign Bonds
I had to laugh when I saw Richard Justice's Houston Chronicle column, suggesting that McLane should sign Bonds to replace Lee for the rest of year. Here is an excerpt of what he says:
The Astros need a left fielder. I know the name of a good one. He's rested and ready. He'll bring a buzz to the ballpark, too. He'd suddenly make the Astros baseball's most interesting team.
What's wrong with having a little buzz? Why should the Dallas Cowboys have all the fun?
Barry Lamar Bonds would be a perfect fit for the Astros.
Our local nine has been winning some games lately. Just as they're closing in on .500, one of their two best players, Carlos Lee, goes down with a broken finger.
If the goal is to win, Drayton McLane will make that call to Barry. What would the Rockets do? They just went for a guy that has done far worse things than Barry.
Trust me when I tell you Barry is vastly overrated as a bad guy in the clubhouse. He's a little prickly at times, a little standoffish, but who among us isn't? Jeff Kent didn't always whistle when he walked in the clubhouse, and he has turned out to be one of the all-time best guys to have on a baseball team.
Besides, Barry would be absolutely thrilled to get another shot. He thinks he has been black-balled. Maybe he has.
That's beside the point. Even if the commissioner doesn't want him in the game, it's Drayton's job to do what's best for his club.
Go for it, Drayton. He might just be the best offensive player of all-time. Since he got big, there's almost no argument about that. No one has done the things Barry has done.
He changes games unlike any other. Opposing pitchers began preparing for him an inning before he was scheduled to hit. If Cecil Cooper batted Barry third, Lance Berkman suddenly would be leading the world in RBI opportunities.
The Astros wouldn't have an empty seat in the house, and you know how many hot dogs that will sell. Hear that sound? That's the cash register ringing. See the standings? The Astros would be moving up.
I doubt that this would ever happen. But it is sure to generate much comment and discussion among Astros' fans, many of whom dislike Bonds immensely. I wouldn't mind seeing it happen, just to see what everybody's reaction would be.

Hmm
Weren’t the Giants resting Bonds like, every third game last year?

probably...but suppose he didn't cost much for two months....
his agent has hinted that he would have considered minimum salary, he wanted to play so badly. It’s hard for anyone to argue that Bonds isn’t a better player than Reggie Abercrombie.
Bonds would look like a more enticing possibility at this point in the season, than signing for a whole season. I think there is a big chance that he can hurt a team’s chemistry. It doesn’t make much difference now, since the Astros’ season is nearly over and getting a WC birth is a long shot.

The Minimum
Is what he stated multiple times that he’d sign for. I think it would be worth it for the club house reaction alone. Can you imagine Lance and Bonds on the same team?
He’s about the only person I can think of that could replace Lee’s production, but how long would it take him to complete a minor league assignment and then get to Bigs to produce?
I’ll chalk this up to another instance of Richard Justice’s editors needing to say “No” followed closely by: “You’re fired.”
A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

His agent claims Bonds has kept in shape and ready to play.
OK. I would put some skepticism in that claim. But I would give him 3 or 4 games in Corpus and Round Rock…..at least you make Nolan and Reid Ryan happy by producing sell outs.
I actually think that Bonds would be so highly motivated that he would fit in well with guys like Berkman and Tejada. Pence would be happy to play with his boyhood hitting idol. (Recall that Bonds had a nice talk with Pence last year when SF came to town, and Bonds learned that Pence patterned his hitting style after Bonds.)

In Shape
But how much live pitching has he seen?
And true, the man will be motivated enough not to be a total ass.

As much as I dislike Barry Bonds
it wouldn’t bother me to sign him for the minimum… hell, I’d even give him 1 million(pro rated) this season… see what he can do…
Being a nice guy is overrated.
Go 'Stros!

Yeah
Now that Bonds has the home run record, I wouldn’t really care as much if he played for us. I think I’ve even heard that he was willing to take the minimum and give it to charity.
If I were Ed Wade, I’d check with the guys in the clubhouse to make sure they’d be cool with it first. But if there are no objections from the players/coaches, and everyone will be able to handle the boos Bonds will draw, the monetary risk is minimal, so I’d pull the trigger.
Ever since the Mitchell Report pointed fingers at Miggy, Clemens, and Pettitte, the “Good Guys” reputation has been scuttled. It’s a move that makes sense for a team that considers itself a contender.

Wade says "no" on Bonds; Berkman says "yes."
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/bb/5935036.html
Wade says he doesn’t think the Astros are interested in Bonds. Berkman is enthusiastic about signing Bonds…he says he would love to have him as a teammate.
Wade’s response seems to be consistent with the claim by Bonds’ agent that MLB is colluding to keep Bonds from being signed.

Management misplayed this one...
...smart move would have been to say “we’re considering all of our options”, and then brought him out for a workout to “evaluate” him. They should’ve done this even if they had no intention of bringing him in. Doing that would have been a much stronger signal of “we’re in it to win it” than the Hawkins or Wolf trades. And if they don’t want him, they could just say that money wasn’t an issue, but they still had some doubts about his durability down the stretch. Doing that would have taken a little of the sting out of the collusion allegations as well.

Drayton won't do it
He’ll take the moral high ground, despite the obvious contradiction of having Tejada on the roster. And we would hear more garbage about “being a champion” or something.
And actually, I’d find myself in the peculiar position of agreeing with Drayton on something. I’m not sure if I could handle that!
It takes more than pitching to win a pennant, but not much!

Re: offensive production
He’s old and falling off. All we could realistically expect is a .270 BA and maybe one HR/week, max, from him. Pitchers are still afraid, though, and will walk him a lot; so should we pick him up he needs to bat ahead of Lance (who will pick up where Lee left off, mark my words).
It would generate excitement and $$ for DMc, but I don’t think it’ll really help at all. But yes, he’ll be better than Abercrombie, and at this point, why the hell not? I say Wade needs to nut up and do it.

keep in mind...
Bonds had a 1.045 OPS last year, and that’s not all OBP…it includes a .565 SLG. He is the only guy available who might remotely match the offensive production Lee has been providing lately.

Yes, I love this idea. He is the greatest hitter of all time, arguable, and still had stellar production last season. His numbers have not fallen off the cliff. The only explanation for his absence this season is management collusion, Wade included. It will take a miracle to make the wild card right now. Bonds is a miracle maker from the plate. I absolutely love this idea. Grow a pair, ‘Stros, and lets go down this year with our boots on. Not to say we are trying like hell as it is, as the kids have turned things around big time. But, without Carlos, there really is little hope. Bonds represents hope. Like Obama but with stats to back it up! Barry! Barry! Barry!

Drayton doesn't respond well to boos
and Bonds got booed something fierce everytime he came to the plate in MMP. i’m sure that has a lot to do with it. it may seem hypocritical with Tejada on the roster, but with all the people clamoring for Tejada over the last several years, it certainly had the appearance of a popular move at the time to sign him, Mitchell report or not.

Dierker complained that MMP cheered for Bonds too much...
when he tied the single season HR record at MMP. Dierker got booed for walking Bonds too much.

Sign Barry Now
if he can’t play we’ll find out in a hurry, and given his willingness to play for the minimum.
