The Astros kind of lucked out for this game... they were originally scheduled to face Edinson Volquez for today's game, but instead are facing Aaron Harang who is coming off the disabled list.  As from looking at Edinson's stats below and Harang's stats above...  you can see why I say this.

you know things are going well...

when you get a 3 run bomb from Bourn, and the pitcher leads off the 2d for the Astros with a double and now scores on a single by

I join this game in progress

Back to Back homers....Berkman, Blum.

Poor Harang. Something must be wrong with him.

Astros read Dying Quails’ article about their “luck” on the Pytahgorean record, and they decided to make up the differential all in one game. :)

Seriously

I do what i can.

A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

just a joke...

didn’t mean it as anything against your article.

Semi-Interesting observation

A week or thereabouts the Astros and Reds were pretty much tied in the standings.

If the Astros win today (and it looks like they will), they will be 9 games ahead of the Reds in the loss column. Meanwhile the Astros are only 8 games behind the Brewers and 5 games behind the Cardinals in the loss column.

OOps - I mean

Astros would be 8 games ahead of the Reds in the loss column.

Barry Bonds to the Astros??

Reds announcers think Astros should sign Bonds.

JD and Brownie talked about it and seem convinced it won't happen.

I wouldn’t mind it at this point in the season. I think it would be entertaining.

Sure, why not?

$500,000. That’s all he gets.

I looked at Reds Reporter...

and they said the Reds DFA’d David Ross, a catcher (didn’t he just hit a HR against the Astros on Friday?). His numbers are pretty good for a catcher:

http://www.hardballtimes.com/thtstats/main/player/index.php?playerId=1551&firstName=Dave&lastName=Ross

by clack on Aug 10, 2008 1:16 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If that's true

We need to scoop him up ASAP. We need any kind of a decent catcher next year and he’s had a pretty good year, worth the prorated league minimum contract for sure.

I love that his OBP is better than his SLG this year too.

A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

not sure.

Bloggers on that site were surprised. They think (hope) that Ross still will be traded (Reds have 10 days to trade him or release him). Maybe he was waived and claimed earlier (then withdrawn), and now Reds have no choice but to DFA him in order to have a chance at trading him. (That is the speculation from Reds Reporter.) It’s also possible that Reds are trying to cut costs, and hope that someone will pick up his salary.

by clack on Aug 10, 2008 1:57 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

seems hard to believe

that if he was really worth a damn, one of these catching starved teams out there would take a chance on him.

make that 12 straight.

Wandy is showing his joy at the trade of Ken Griffey, Jr., out of the NL.

Much much better outing by Wandy

than his last one in Chicago.

Ugh

Two consecutive coreless innings for the offense. What losers. :p

Wandy Wandilicious on the Road?

In a ridiculously hitter friendly park?

This is a big day indeed.

What if it were capped off with a Bonds signing? How crazy of a day would this be.

Reds Reporter...

I enjoyed this banter on their game thread:

i bet

if Franz Kafka were alive today he would be writing a book on the Reds.

I bet if Dusty Baker were alive today

he’d do a good job managing the Reds.

That’s clever.

LaTroy Hawkins in for Wandy —Bases loaded two outs.

That Erstad catch in left looking very important right now.

But Astros get the last laugh as the bases are loaded with score, 10-2. Bourn, Pence, Blum, Wiggy with hits.

Is it Jeff Brantley....

He has been fairly controversial in his criticisms of Reds’ players.

by clack on Aug 10, 2008 2:38 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

OMG. If you are Reds' fan, you have to be slamming your head...

With bases loaded, 2d baseman gets a DP grounder, throws to 1st for an out, but then the throw to 2d goes into CF….12-2. Then, Erstad with a hit….13-2.

Just got home

Took my son fishing this morning with the grand parents… I caught some of the game on the way home… Sounds like we’ve destroyed the Reds today and this series(assuming they don’t score 11+ runs in the next 1 1/3 innings).

Glad to hear that Lance hit a home run… not that it really matters much as a whole… just kind of a slump

2 run HR for Hannigan...first ML HR on his first day in the majors.

Hannigan is the young catcher called up when David Ross was DFA’d.

Pessimist!

It’s not likely he’ll have 2 terrible games in a row… and the Giants aren’t that good this season..

There’s no reason to think that the Astros can’t win tomorrow.
