New York Mets at Houston Astros, Aug 1, 2008 7:05 PM CDT
It's not too often that you could say in a game started by Pedro Martinez and Brandon Backe, that you could put the favor on Backe's side... but with the way they have pitched so far this season(and the fact that Pedro missed most of the season due ot injury), you could actually favor the Astros starting pitcher... at least by looking at the stats.
Pedro isn't exactly the pitcher he was when he signed with the Mets from the Red Sox. Due to injuries(and just age catching up with him), he doesn't have the good fastball that he used to have and he just can't pitch deep into games any more. So far this season, he's averaging just under 5 innings per game pitch. He still has the attitude and will probably still throw at you if you "upset" him... but he's not the threat to an offense he used to be.
As speculated(after Blum's 2 straight 0-4 games), Ty Wigginton has found his way back in the lineup, batting 6th behind Pence... Bourn also returns to the lineup tonight... the last time we seen him he was pinch running(and limping) for the Astros. Hopefully the ankle is healed to where it doesn't bother him. A healthy Bourn hasn't been very productive for the Astros this season, so I fear what an unhealthy Bourn can do.
This is off topic and really has no point to it.. but I was just looking through stats and noticed that Darin Erstad played for the Angels when they were the California Angels, the Anaheim Angels, and the Los Angeles Angles of Anaheim...

ESPN.com makes Astros a slight favorite in tonight’s toss-up game.
If ESPN is correct, expect a Carlos to hit a homerun for each team.
Erstad will start instead of Bourn. Looks like Bourn’s ankle did not hold up in pregame activities.
Astros sign a draft choice for twice the recommended slot price. It looks like Drayton McLane would rather have a team like the Selig-less Brewers than one like the Brewers team owned by the Bud Selig clan.
I’m liking Bobby Heck more and more as a scouting director.

One more miscellaneous comment
Did anyone else notice that articles about who were winners and losers in recent trades don’t even mention the Astros?

The one I read did.
I think it was on mlb.com (maybe?). It listed the Astros as neither a winner nor a loser. It listed them under a heading simply titled, “Huh?”

I read two that called the Astros losers
one on Baseball Prospectus and the other on Fox Sports I think. most were incredulous.
just a few

The diagnosis of Ed Wade’s senile dementia is confirmed, and while he avoids the social faux pas of using the laundry hamper as an outhouse, his amusingly befuddled brain cooks up a scheme to follow his Randy Wolf doozy with a perplexing deal for LaTroy Hawkins. Yes, their 20-34 record since May 27 notwithstanding, once that rusted jalopy gets some fuzzy dice, this team will be doing 90 on the interstate to the promised land.

Fun Double Play
Berkman catches a ground ball on the second base side of the Mets runner (David Wright). Tags Wright for out one and jogs to first for out 2 to retire the side.

DAYUUUM!
Did you see that shot? (I didn’t) But I’m going to imagine it was a towering 450 foot home run.

Do Astros want a used catcher?
This news item: Late Thursday, the Nationals gave infielder Felipe Lopez and catchers Paul Lo Duca and Johnny Estrada their unconditional releases.
I remember Paul LoDuca being a fine catcher not so long ago.

That's kinda odd
usually it’s 1 player at a time…
I might take a run at one of them… both are having bad years, but both have much higher career numbers than any catcher we have… and both were decent last season.
Go 'Stros!
I remember Johnny Estrada
was quite a coveted talent a few years back. for the Braves, right? never really fulfilled.
Lo Duca
had a couple good years but i’m pretty sure he was on the roids

Nice shot for anyone, much less a pitcher

They are showing the Rangers game over here.
Rangers are getting stomped by the Blue Jays.
And for some reason they are showing the NL central standings.
hey now, don’t sound too disappointed ;-)
Suppan is on the mound, so I have my fingers crossed for an inning or two more, but it should bring back some pleasant memories for you.
Cards are winning 4-0 now.
Doesn’t look like we are getting any closer to the wild card tonight. (Yes, I still have hope, misplaced as it may be.)

AHHH!!
I would have kept Sampson in… he’s been good at stranding runners lately..
I don’t trust Wright as much as I do Sampson and I don’t care about matchups.

Maybe someday we won't have a reason to complain...
Next year.. maybe?

nice relief work. Good thing we added more relievers at the deadline to help, they really came in ha…. oh wait, we had all those guys before the deadline. my bad.

drayton said in an article today on astros.com
that he believes we can still win the division, based on the fact that we went 17-11 in May and had a good surge in June.
Maybe it’s not ALL Ed Wade’s fault. geez.
I thought Drayton learned his lesson w/ the Drabek/Swindell fiasco, and then the failed trade for Clemens from the Blue Jays. But he continues to Jones (as in Jerry) this team to death. next few years are going to be depressing.
To be fair
Every time the past several years that we’ve made the playoffs, we were written off at some point that year, and made a Drayton-predicted improbable run. And made the same run falling just inches short one or two other times.

Milwaukee has gone final
9-0 Brewers. No wild card advancement today, folks. Cards still winning theirs, 6-3 in the 8th.
I was stunned Carlos didn't make that play
as soon as Puma hit it I just figured he’d catch it b/c he’s carlos and we’re the astros. nice to see Puma w/ a big knock and bad luck for it bouncing over the fence.
Er...gameday is jacked up.
Ground rule double soo.. the score should be 3-3. They say it;s 4-3. Didn’t have Tejada on third, but now they do.

Ground Rule Doubles
I’m too lazy to look up the actual rule, but am I wrong in thinking that it’s within the umpire’s discretion to award the baserunners the bases they would have reached had the ball stayed in play? Maybe that’s some old rule, or I’m just insane. Of course, if it is a rule, I don’t think I’ve ever seen it exercised, so for practical purposes it’s moot.
I’d guess Gameday messed up b/c whoever is running it saw that Miggy clearly would have scored on that hit before he noticed that it had been ruled a ground rule double by Puma. Lance probably makes it to third standing up.
Has anyone ever heard anything like that?
This is what it says on wikipedia
So I’ll assume it is correct.
Any baserunners ahead of the batter are also entitled to advance two bases on a ground rule double, based on their positions when the ball was pitched. This sometimes has the effect of denying a team a run, since a runner starting from first base would frequently come around to score on a normal double to the outfield, but in this case must stop at (or go back to) third base. This also means, that if a man is on second base, and a ground rule double is hit, he advances to score.
Go 'Stros!
the umpire's discretion comes into play on balls affected by fan interference...
in those instances, the ump can make a judgement as to how far a base runner would have gotten, and place the runner at that base. Maybe that situation is what lnewcomer was thinking of.
There may be a judgment call
as far as “based on their positions when the ball was pitched”. If there was a run & hit, could the ump decide the runner on 1st was on 2nd for purposes of that rule and score him?
by Xan on Aug 2, 2008 1:11 AM CDT up reply actions
I think the two-bases on a ground rule double
is not subject to the umpire’s discretion. The Wikipedia entry is what I understand the rule to be.
The fan interference is subject umpire discretion, but not the ground rule double.
