Houston Astros at Atlanta Braves, 12:35 PM CDT
Houston Astros @ Atlanta Braves
Bah, I guess the experience of having a lead off guy who actually gets on base was too much for Cooper to handle, so he puts in the Michael Bourn... I guess the .280 OBP is enough for Cooper.
No Tejada today... evidently the few days off they will receive during the All-Star break isn't enough. Cooper and Tejada "agreed" that today was a good day to take off...
No Berkman either... but he has pink eye or some sort of infection in his left eye that is causing him to be unable to open his eye.
Don't expect the Astros to score more than 2 or 3 runs today with this lineup... even if they are facing a guy with a 6+ ERA.

Opposing pitcher throws very hard...
but he is young…and given his ERA, I assume that the Astros chances depend on how patient they can be.

Mixed reaction
I was actually slightly comforted by Tejada not playing (though Loretta at short does not inspire confidence). When I saw Berkman wasn’t playing I figured Cooper was conceding this game (this was before I read about Berkman’s eye infection in the openign remarks).
I’m trying to decede if I want this rain delay to be a rainout.

Loretta's defense is bothersome....
I don’t know why it seems that Wandy ends up with Loretta at shortstop so often over the last year or so. But, other than that, I’m not too concerned about the lineup offensively, as long as Berkman isn’t out for too long. Loretta is hitting better than Tejada right now. And Erstad has hit very well in his starts.

AL STarters
4 Red Sox (Youkilis, Manny, Pedroia, Ortiz)
2 Yankees (A-Rod, Jeter)
1 Mariner (Ichiro)
1 Ranger (Hamilton)
1 Twin (Mauer)
Althought Ortiz is injuried and won’t play so someone will need to take his place.

I'm getting a liitle sick of all the Cubs games

My totally uninformed calcuation is
$50,000 per out or $150,000 per inning
I assumed he pitches in 80 games a year for 3 outs a game, rounded to 250 outs a year.

The only time I ever had a reaction to a baseball draft was when I fumed the Astros wasted their first two draft choices in 2005 – # 1 being for what I thought was a highly overrated Brian Bogusevic. Still I was surprised at this from McTaggart’s Chronicle entry:
Lefthander Brian Bogusevic, the Astros’ first-round pick in 2005 out of Tulane University, is done as a pitcher. The Astros plan to switch Bogusevic to the outfield and will send him to Class A Salem to begin making the transition.

many teams viewed him as a better draft choice as a batter than as a pitcher.

any estimates on when it will end?
truthfully, it’s probably to the Astros’ advantage to have a rain out….considering the effect of Oswalt’s injury on the rotation and the weaker lineup today.

Carlos Lee is a final vote All Star candidate
Other candidates:
Pat Burrel
Corey Hart
Aaron Rowand
David Wright
Lee should have a good chance to win.

Lee may have a chance but
David Wright gets the NY Media vote
Corey Hart, Aaron Rowan are good too. I’my not sure about Burrel, but he’s probably deserving, too.

Carlos Lee has a good shot
Pat Burrel is probably the most deserving, but he won’t get the vote. He’s not a marquee name.
David Wright is from New York, so he might get some votes… but only ONE Met made the All Star team. And it was their closer, who may not even pitch. He’s 19 and 24 in save opportunities. He snuck on to the team because they needed a Mets player. Wright wasn’t even in the top 15 outfielders for the fan vote.
Carlos Lee is a pretty big name because he was fairly recently a big name free agent, so he probably has more name recognition than a lot of the other players. Plus he was the highest vote getter in the fan ballot on the list of candidates last time the numbers came in. (They may have ended a little differently, though.)
Fan votes:
Lee: 6th
Hart: 8th
Burrell: 10th
Rowand: -
Wright: -

Maybe it's based on how far a softball can be thrown effectively?
It’s 40 something feet, isn’t it? Maybe if the pitchers set up farther than that the balll is too easy to hit. ???
