Houston Astros at Atlanta Braves, 6:35 PM CDT
Houston Astros at Atlanta Braves, Jul 4, 2008 6:35 PM CDT
The Houston Astros head into Atlanta today after losing 3 straight games to the Dodgers and having lost 5 of the last 10. The Braves have lost 5 straight and 7 of the last 10 and have an identical record to the Astros at 40 and 46.
The Astros start off the series by sending Brian Moehler to the hill to face off with Tim Hudson. Moehler has been outstanding this season as a starter earning a 4-3 record with a 3.38 ERA over his 10 games started.
The Astros had originally planned to send Roy Oswalt to the hill tomorrow to face Jo-Jo Reyes, but Cooper decided to give Roy a few more days of rest to try and get his strained left hip abductor back to 100%. Roy said that he could probably pitch on Saturday but that it would be "a stretch". Roy is now scheduled to make this start on Tuesday against the Pirates and then the final game before the All-Star break.

Missed beginning of game...
Because FSN was showing Rangers’ game first and it lasted too long (Rangers lost to Orioles, 10-5).

Chipper Jones hit a ball which looked like a HR or double...
but Erstad, who is playing CF, makes a very nice running catch which required him to avoid hitting the wall as well as Hunter Pence who was running in his direction.

Towles whiffs on all three swings....reminds me of his pre-Round Rock days
with the Astros. Hudson looks tough tonight.

Erstad Starting in Center
I san see why Cooper started Erstad in centerfield tonight. The Astros sent a pathetic batting line-up wth Blum, Loretta, Towles and Moehler. Toss in a slumping Tejada and Pence, and Astros did not need another automatic out in th line-up. Hence Bourn sits and Erstad plays.
If I had my drutheor s, I ‘d get Wigginton in there as soon as possible.

Astros misplay the ball twice
to allow a rookie to get a triple as his first major league hit.

Pence
was slow in going back for the ball and it went over his head; then Loretta threw the relay throw to home well after McCann scored allowing the batter to trot into third.

Kotsay with run scoring sac fly
Now a rookie named Perry in his first bat has a RBI double. Seems like Pence wasn’t playing that ball well….started in and then had to chase it back toward the wall.
2-0 Braves.

Cecil Cooper looking
lLike he is withdrawing from everything about now, based on his body language.
It’s like he doesn’t like what he sees, butt doesn’t know what to do about it.
I feel for him. I’m not sure there is anything he can do (except let Wigginton play!) .

Yunel Escobar has a strange ritual.
Before his at bat, while still in batter’s circle, he jumps straight up in the air.
by clack on Jul 4, 2008 7:25 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Since he jumped just as previous batter was walked...JD jokes:
“Whoopee, we got a walk.”

1776 patriots?
I think Braves scoreboard screen is showing Braves’ players dressed as American patriots, and Astros players as British red coats.

Braves look so much better than the Astros. It is hard to believe they have the same W-L record

Did the scorer change Berkman's error to a hit?
Thought I just heard radio say that.
by entropic soul on Jul 4, 2008 7:37 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I don't think so. JD and Brownie said it was changed from "hit" to error.

Now JD and Brownie say that the scorer changed it to a hit...
they joke that Scott Boras got on the phone.

I want to strangle Tejada right now.
He’s been nothing but a rally killer for the last 2 months. Him and “Future of the Astros” Hunter Pence.

Towles with another swinging K.
maybe Sean Berry told him to go back to the way he told him to bat before he went to Round Rock. (I don’t know if you saw the article in which Towles said that the Astros’ coaches had changed in batting mechanics, and the Round Rock hitting coach told him to go back to his old style which led to a surge in his hitting at AAA.)
by clack on Jul 4, 2008 7:53 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Maybe Sean Berry is just the worst hitting coach of all time.
How else can this offense be explained?

Moehler with two conseuctive 1-2-3 innings.
See what happens when fielders catch the ball?

Full count on Moehler
Exactly.
Walked him.
Moehler is better than most of our line up. :p

DEAR GOD WE HAVE AN RBI!!!
Oh it’s Berkman. He’s the only one that gets them now-a-days.
Ok Lee does too, but what are the chances.

Has anyone else been announced besides Lance?

Braves announcers
say Moehler and Towles were not commincating well the first few innnigs;and that frustrated Moehler. They showed Moehler explaining things to Towles in the dugout between innings and says things have gone better since the talk.

Perhaps Jim Deshais should be the manager...
before the HR he wondered why the bullpen wasn’t up, and he said there was cause for concern because batters were getting such good swings on Moehler.

I haven't tuned into a game
where the Astros HAVEN’T been down by 4 runs or more since I got back from my mini-vaction. This has to stop soon.

I was on vacation
the week the slump began and the Astros played the Yankees. I’m thinking no regular on TCB should take vacatinos during baseball season.

Good work hitting the ball off the pitcher, Towles!
