Would you?

In an e-mail from one of our awesome developers here at SBNation(who is an Astros fan and was showing some disgust with the Hawkins trade/Astros management), jokingly(well... ) made this comment...

Can we trade Oswalt to the Rays for Hunsicker?

So I give this question to you.  With the current state of the Astros... would you trade our best pitcher in Roy Oswalt to the Tampa Bay Rays for Gerry Hunsicker?

I wouldn't trade Oswalt for players, much less front office people.

Hunsicker is OK, but overrated, IMO. (Don’t give him complete credit for the D-Rays; he isn’t the GM there, just a consultant.) Look, the Astros had their chance to get good GMs this last summer, and they blew it. Even setting aside some of my preferences for the GM job (e.g., DePodesta) who were not in the mix apparently, the Astros interviewed several candidates who probably would have been good GMs (Mozeliak who later became the GM in St. Louis and Logan White with the Dodgers). And maybe the worst front office mistake was letting Nolan Ryan go to the Rangers. If Ryan wanted a front office job (like president of baseball operations), why didn’t they offer it to him?

Hunsicker had the Astros on top

For he better part of a decade. He would understand the need for the system and how to start putting it back together and tell Drayton to stick it when he came up with some hairbrained idea for how to keep the fans in the seats. Oswalt can’t give the Astros a winning record by himself and either could Hunsicker. But Hunsicker would have a much better chance of getting them there.

My friends suggested I see someone about my baseball problem. So I made an appointment but just ended up helping the doctor with his fantasy team.

I voted no

since you can get Hunsicker without trading Oswalt. I figure that is not really one of the choices but that’s the reality.

Maybe a Wade and the rights to Woody Williams for Hunsicker

Wade for Hunsicker?

The only person you could talk into taking Ed Wade and giving up Hunsicker is Ed Wade and that is because he might be able to put Woody in the bullpen. Well, you might be able to get Purpura to do it too.

Almost 2-1 in favor of trading Roy

Shows how bad people feel about Wade…

Wish Drayton could see this…

I tend to agree that Hunsicker is getting too much credit in Tampa

for one thing, a lot of it has to do w/ the fact that they’ve sucked so bad that they’ve been getting premium draft picks for years. Drafting wisely is still difficult, but we really don’t know what role Hunsicker’s played in that. I agree w/ clack that we had a legitimate shot to change the trajectory of this org last offseason w/ the choice of GM, but McLane and Tal Smith chose to stick w/ the old. Maybe b/c Purpura was sort of considered one of the new generation of GM’s it scared them, but I haven’t had any hopes for this team since we hired Wade.
