Everett Back with the Twins

For those of you who were sad that Adam Everett got DFA'd by the Twins, well.. he's back with them. It wasn't actually a DFA, but a contemplative outright assignment form... which I have no idea what that means, but he had 3 days to accept... He was on the DL, though. As it turns out, the Twins had to place their 2nd baseman on the DL so they activated Everett.

I really like Adam Everett (even though he couldn't hit worth a lick) and he'd be a good defensive replacement for the Astros next year. Well, he WOULD if he hadn't been on the DL like 3 times this year. I'm not sure if he could be an effective defender anymore.

What do you think of signing Everett next year and have him as a defensive replacement for SS with a move of Tejada to 3rd base late in the game? Tejada would have to learn some 3rd base, but he has a very strong and accurate arm. That would keep the team with a superior offensive shortstop during most of the game, with a BIG increase in defense later in the game when we have a slim lead. (Assuming Everett can still play effectively.)

I'm worried that broken leg

Everett is Brad Ausmus w/o the intangibles

that have kept Ausmus in a major league uniform years after he should have retired. Everett’s bat doesn’t warrant him a spot on a MLB roster, no matter how good his glove.

Think about that next time a ball gets through...

between Wigginton and Tejada in the 8th or 9th inning with a 1 run lead.

Tejada's stick

has way outweighed any differences between him and Everett in terms of defense in my opinion.

From my original post:

I could retort that by saying

Think about that the next time Tejada hits an RBI double in the 8th or 9th inning in a 1 run game.

I don’t like defensive replacements… period. I hate every time Lee is pulled out of a close late inning game and the game goes into extras and then they are unavailable. (It’s happened) It’s against my religion :)

The chances of a player like Lee or Tejada being the reason we lose a game due to their defense(in the later innings) are much slimmer then the chances of them helping us win a game in the late innings with their bat.

He wouldn't replace Tejada in the line up.

He would replace Wigginton. Tejada would move to third. Everett would play SS. That is ++ defensive. (Although the whole argument could be a moot point since Everett hasn’t shown to be a productive defender this year anyway.)

I think the answer depends on Everett's defensive ability...

at this point in time. He has been injured so much, I am skeptical as to whether he is the same defensive player. When he has played for the Twins this season, Everett has a good Revised Zone Rating score (.871), but it is only marginally better than Tejada’s RZR (.864). If Everett could perform at the same level he did in his prime, I think he is a great addition…in fact, it would be worth thinking about the defensive improvement of a Tejada at 3d and Everett as shortstop tandem on a starting basis. In the 2005 – 2006 period, Everett saved a ridiculously high number of runs, according to most defensive metrics, and I think he was a big part of the reason that the Astros had a pitching staff which was ranked so highly in those years. However, as I say, I’m skeptical whether Everett’s injuries have taken him down a few notches. Unlike Stros, I think using defensive replacements for Wiggy and Lee in the late innings of low scoring games (with the Astros leading) is smart baseball. Personally, I would like to see the Astros upgrade 3d base next year, but I’m not sure what is available.
