I know this is old but what do you think about the draft the Stros had?

I personally love the Jason Castro pick. And I know I am going to get heat for this but I like Ed Wade and Bobby Heck and the way this year is going I know we are going to have a top 10 draft pick again but that doesnt bother me as long has we get some good playerrs then it'll be fine. But I want to hear want yall have to say. And I have one more question are there any international prospects out there we will sign?

I'm not an expert on amateur prospects....

but my reaction to the Astros’ draft is fairly positive. I was not overly impressed with the Castro pick; it was clearly a reach for that position in the draft, and I would have preferred picking a higher upside player. However, that was not a terrible pick, and Castro stands a good chance of becoming a major league player.

If the Astros sign Castro and Seaton, I will feel pretty good about the Astros’ draft. Already some of the signees seem to have shown potential in the minor leagues. The Astros’ rookie league team already has a no hitter, and several of the pitchers involved are from this draft. Jordan Lyles, the supplemental pick for the Astros (because Trevor Miller was offered arbitration) has a 1.0 ERA for that team. From what I have read, Heck seems to be an improvement in running the Astros’ scouting system.

Dissapointed

Most of what I heard about the top picks was something along the lines of he was projected a round later or they reached some.
I was hoping that they would get Smoak with the 10th pick – who the Rangers took with the 11th pick. He is supposed to be a great bat. Possibly the second best in the draft. Instead they took a catcher that was project about 15 picks later.
The baseball draft takes the longest to get a good read on though. It will be at least 3 years until we can tell who did well with this bunch of guys.

My friends suggested I see someone about my baseball problem. So I made an appointment but just ended up helping the doctor with his fantasy team.

Castro looked good

in the CWS. I wish they’d sign him & get him playing in the minors.

The Astros haven’t had a good catcher since they moved Biggio to 2B, and the franchise history of catchers is dismal. When your best catcher ever is Alan Ashby, that’s a problem. And it’s a big reason for no championships in 46 years.

They tried to address this franchise black hole with Max Sapp 2 years ago. Oops. They pretty much have to try again, or pin the franchise future on Towles coming through after all, a big unknown at this point. Taking the best catcher available when they picked was a good thing to do. Doesn’t matter if he might have lasted another 10-15 picks. He would’ve been gone by the time the Astros picked again.,

There is a bright side to the '08 season.
Barry Bonds & Roger Clemens are out of baseball.

The Astros need more than Catching

If that was all they needed I could see stretching for the pick but the Astros have possibly the worst organizational depth in baseball. Getting the best catcher available is not going to get them anywhere or fill a huge void right now. Towles may end up working out anyway.
The Astros need prospects at basically every position. You migth be able to leave out 1st and OF. The Astros are not a winning team looking for that last piece. They are a crummy team that needs to take the best available player.
It will take years to figure out whether this was a good draft anyway. I’ll give them benefot of the doubt till we find out otherwise and then I am taking Wade’s job.

Most available scouting report and the evaluation of amateur prospects come from BA, most comments form those experts were based on those BA report.

Scouting is kind of ….....Art. There is no scout never wrong, most of them get wrong quit often. If most negative comment on Astros draft is based on same scouting group source, then take it easy. Fans never know the real concern of the organization. If there is no “business first” in our draft, and our scouts really high on Castro, I will take it even he turns to joke eventually.

Since we never know the club is draft “the business” or “the talent”, just give our best wish to the young players.

By the way, 38th overall draft – Lyles is doing quit well at Greenville. Most comment when he got draft was “overdraft”, but who knows the future :)
