Randy Wolf makes his Astros debut today against Jeff Suppan and the Milwaukee Brewers.  Wolf was picked up by the Astros earlier in the week in an attempt to get this team into the playoffs.  The Brewers pick up Sabathia; the Cubs pick up Harden... and the Astros pick up Wolf.  We were already a worse team than either of those teams and no offense to Wolf... but he isn't exactly pitching as well as either of those 2 players.

Wolf has started 21 games this season, which is more than he's started in any of his last 3 seasons.  The last time Wofl started more than 20 games was in 2004 when he pitched 23.  So far this season, Wolf has earned a 6-10 record with a 4.74 ERA.  In Wolf's home games in San Diego, he was 5-4 with a 3.17 ERA... but in away games, he was 1-6 with a 6.63 ERA.  Which pitcher will we see?

Why is Wigginton not playing?  Okay... he's been kind of slumping... but he's still head and shoulders above Blum as a hitter.  Sit him one game while he's slumping to try and break up the slump... but 2 games in a row is excessive to me.  He needs to be playing today.

Blum

11-21 against Suppan… I’m assuming that’s why he’s in… I still don’t care :)

I understand it

but I don’t agree with it…

21 at bats means nothing to me

No.

Called Coop last night. Told him about my new rule:
Players who get a first pitch out in a game without getting any RBIs or runs in said game are automatically benched for the next day’s game.
Obviously, he’s just doing what I told him to.

Wigginton not playing

I also wonder why Wigginton is not playing. I had not noticed he was in a slump. I saw him as Astros number 3 productive hitter larely.

doubt this has much to do with it

but he had a horrible game last night after he came in during a double switch. i’m sure it was probably the Blum numbers though

by lnewcomer on Jul 27, 2008 1:45 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

it could have something to do with it...

I have noticed a pattern in which Cooper benches players for a game after they make a bad error.

Braun gets a hit to LF

Hall aggressively took third and just got in ahead of Carlos Lee’s throw. Braun takes second on the play. Lee did a decent job charging the ball and made a good throw.

Fielder lines a ball into center and Erstad makes a nice sliding play to get it. Hall scores from third on the sacrifice.

Hart up w/ Braun at 2nd.

Geoff Blum has a good AB and ends up lining a homer into the Astros bullpen in right field.

Tied up 1-1. 1 out.

“[The soreness] is around the whole ankle, so it’s not like a sprain. I think I just jammed it,” Bourn said. “I can ride the bike and loosen it up. I’m going to take [batting practice] in the cage after chapel.

“I don’t think it’ll hurt to swing; I just think it’ll hurt to run. I can put pressure on it and stuff like that.”

Houston manager Cecil Cooper was positive when speaking of Bourn’s condition, but said that the Astros would be cautious with him.

“It might take a couple of days,” Cooper said. “He was walking gingerly today; the hope is he’ll feel better tomorrow.”

Bourn’s hitting .400 since July 9 according to the article. Bummer

Brewers playing Erstad w/ a shift on the infield

or so it looked, and he hit right into it. bouncer to 3rd baseman playing way over in the hole, who throws it to SS covering 2nd and onto 1st for the DP

Spikes high

looking at the replay, Rivera was out by two miles at third, but he slid in w/ his spikes way high, I suppose on the theory of trying to knock the ball out of the glove. He didn’t do much and I didn’t see Blum react at all.

seemed a little cheap to me.

CRAP!

I don’t know whether to blame Miggy or not.

He hits a sharp grounder to Hall at 3rd, who bobbles it, drop it, but still has time to run to the bag at 3rd, and then throw across the diamond to get Tejada for a DP. seems like it took way too long to get down the line.

but Tejada can’t get the throw out of his hand, double-clutches and then bounces it to 1st and Puma can’t scoop it. E6, runner on 1st

Braun hits a 2 run oppo field HR

thanks miggy.

I was going to write a minute ago that Braun swung right thru an 83 mph breaking pitch, right in the heart of the plate. He didn’t miss that high pitch and drove it out down the RF line

Fielder is pissed

don’t know if he’s in a slump or what, but he just missed a hanger and foulded it off. looked like he yelled something and almost replicated his bat shattering move from last night. kinda looks like an idiot. he should lose some weight.

brewers are leading 4-1

by lnewcomer on Jul 27, 2008 2:07 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

crazy play

2 outs, Hall hits a soft bouncer to the left of the mound.

Wolf broke well off the mound, fielded it, but w/ no chance to turn and throw to first. Instead he makes a wild throw to 2nd, that was BEHIND Hart who had rounded 2nd. Matsui chased him towards 3rd, then tossed ot to Tejada as the rundown headed back to 2nd. Only problem, there was no one covering 2nd. Berkman tried to get over, but wasn’t in time.

Hart just stole 3rd.

by lnewcomer on Jul 27, 2008 2:16 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wolf not doing a good job holding runners on 2nd

Hart got a huge jump on him.

Earlier Braun did the same but had to go back b/c the pitch was fouled off

Wolf is playing with fire today

brewers are getting solid knocks of fhim and he’s given up 4 runs thru 2 1/3. (one of those reached on an error, so I’m not sure if all of them are earned or not). could get ugly.

It was a critical play...how many extra innings did that game go?

And by taking the game on the Astros’ home turf, it did make the Astros odds go way down in that series.

by clack on Jul 27, 2008 3:51 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, but it was just one play

I think statues more for players that have done great things for their teams for 10, 15 years or something. Unless he did that… I’m not familiar with his background with the White Sox.
