Listening at work
and it’s already ugly. 3 runs on 4 hits so far in the 1st, with only 1 out. Bay homered to drive in 2 of the 3.
we NEED some offense for a change. aren’t the Pirates starters sporting the worst ERA in baseball?

Ian Snell
batting 8th, logs hit number 6 to drive in run number 4.
Jack Wilson, the 9th guy to bat in the 1st, up with two outs and men on the corners.

Bottom 1st
Walk, Single, Walk, and the bases are juiced with no outs for Lee.
by littlevisigoth on Jul 23, 2008 1:30 PM CDT 0 recs
Lee flies out too short to score Matsui
then Loretta (no Tejada today) sees a ton of pitches before lining it to the gap in left, scoring two. great at-bat.
1st and 3rd, Pence up, one out. he chops it to short, but beats out the double play, allowing Berkman to score.

Wiggy sees 7 more pitches
and Pence swipes 2nd in there, but eventually K’s to end the inning.
Nice that we loaded them up with no outs and managed to get all three runs home, and forced Snell to throw 36 pitches in the process (Moehler’s at 27).
4-3 bad guys.

Top 2nd
Pirates strike again quickly. McLouth gets all the way to 2nd on a fielding error by Berkman (hit off his glove into no-man’s land) and is driven home by a double into the corner by Sanchez. 5-3 bad guys, Sanchez on 2nd, no outs.

Work got in the way of a couple innings
Matsui homered (only his 2nd on the year) and Bourn got ANOTHER hit (and stole a base), but we only got one run back in the 2nd.
Back to back doubles score another for the Buccos in the 3rd. Moehler gets a ground out, but is lifted for Sampson (missed this part, so I didn’t catch any discussion of an injury, or if it was just obvious he didn’t have it today). Sampson induces a popout from Wilson, intentionally walks McLouth, then strikes out Sanchez to get out of it.
Onto the bottom of the 3rd for the Stros, down 6-4. Snell still pitching with 62 pitches thrown.

Bottom of the 3rd
Wiggington and Ausmus double back-to-back with two outs to bring the good guys back within 1.
Top of the 4th and Sampson works the first scoreless frame of the game for either team.
Bottom of the 4th, Matsui walks and steals 2nd after Bourn’s fly out to right. Lance up with an RBI chance with one out.

And Lance comes through
singling up the middle to score Matsui. TJ Beam pitching now, btw. Both teams into the bullpen after the 3rd frame.

Astros 6 Pirates 6 top of the fifth
I didn’t realize it was a day game until I saw a scroll score in a restaurant at lunch. Astros trailed 4-0 at the time. I was semi-thankful I was missing the game.
I’m relieved to find the game tied after 4.
Pirates threatening in the fifth – naturally.

Sampson sounds like he's on his game today
has gone 2 2/3 scoreless so far. He hasn’t pitched since Sunday (if I’m not mistaken), and with the off-day tomorrow, I’m sure he’ll go another. He’s only at 33 pitches.

Top of the order again
and Matsui and Bourn have reached a combined 5 of 6 times so far, with a SB each, scooring 4 of our 6 runs. we need more of that from those two.
just as i’m typing that, Matsui grounds out.

Trouble in the 7th
Doumit singles, Bay pops out, Nady singles, and LaRoche walks to load ‘em up with one out.
Mientkiewicz singles to score just one. bases still loaded. activity in the bullpen.
Jason Michaels pinch hits for Osoria, who was the Pirates third pitcher.
by littlevisigoth on Jul 23, 2008 3:38 PM CDT 0 recs

but Loretta’s relay on the DP isn’t in time, so it goes as a FC with a run scored. bad guys up 8-6 now.

is it me
or has it been a while since Pence has gotten the ball out of the infield. sure seem to be a lot of choppers, dribblers, and rollers on the infield. he’s beaten out some hits and some would-be DPs, but he just doesn’t seem to be hitting many hard lately.

I was off work most of today
so I saw almost the entire game. Actually had tickets, but got off work late enough that I didn’t want to go to the trouble of driving to Houston. Was very glad I didn’t! Had I actually attended the game, I would have missed the best part, which was Brownie and J.D. (Pretty sad when the announcers are the only reason to watch, as someone else noted a few days/weeks ago.) They interviewed Matsui’s interpreter, and it was pretty funny. I was never quite sure if the fellow truly had a sly sense of humor, or if some of the jokes were unintentional, but it nonetheless made me giggle quite a bit. For instance, they asked him how to say “home run” in Japanese. He responded (phonetically spelled), “Home lun.” (And don’t think I’m being racist here, or anything—he made J.D. and Brownie pronounce it that way several times.) And “double play” was “douber pray.” Later, J.D. was joking, “Hey, maybe I could get a gig like that. He’s not an interpreter, just a guy with an accent!”
Meh. Guess you had to “be” there.
The other thing that astounded me was attendance-over 36,000 for a weekday afternoon game against the (formerly) worst team in the division? How is that possible? Granted, I was considering going myself, but simply because I didn’t want to waste the tickets and I couldn’t find anyone else to take them at the last minute. And maybe that’s exactly how you get that kind of attendance, but I’m starting to agree with those who find it problematic-in other words, nothing will change in the outlook of the front office if attendance remains good, because the money is all they really care about. I’m certainly not planning to re-up next year.
Okay, end of rant.

I noticed that there seemed to be lots of kids...
maybe that is just what the cameras zeroed in for, because kids don’t tend to look pissed off, like adult fans. But there aren’t many day games left, and a weekday game in July can be a good time to take your kids or your little league team to MMP.

Not only kids , .
but organized groups of kids. I thought it was little league day or something. I’ll see if I can find out what today’s event was (besides cotton candy eating day).

Somebody on one of the Chronicle blogs went to Monday and Tuesday’s games. He was an irritated camper. I felt for him.

I thought it was always this way on
day games when school is out? Day camps – there must be tons of them – pick these games to attend. There must be only 2 – at best 3 weekday afternoon games – to choose from, so for these few games they pack them in.

On a Pirates' note...I wonder what the heck has happened to Snell...
Last year, Snell looked like one of the real up and coming young pitchers in the majors. I was pretty high on his future, but he has gone in the ditch this year. If you’re a Pirates’ fan that has to be disheartening. It is like the way that Oliver Perez ’s Pirates career fell apart.
