Pittsburgh Pirates at Houston Astros, 7:05 PM CDT
Pittsburgh Pirates at Houston Astros, Jul 22, 2008 7:05 PM CDT
I'm happy to see Cassel up with the big club... I think he should stay for the rest of the season and see what he can do...
I'm still shocked at the way we lost last night... I had a good feeling about it going into the 9th and was just thinking to myself how Valverde usually gets the deal done when he has a 1 run lead... I was so wrong as he didn't get out of the inning and the Astros ended up losing 3-9. How you give up 7 runs in the 9th is beyond me, but the Astros managed to do it. I guess Valverde heard us talking about trading him during the game and wanted to lower his trade value.

no homer
should have been a double.
although, the SOUND on the replay sounded like metal, but it’s hard to say w/ sound. who knows where the mikes are, the acoustics, etc
Controversial Homerun to start the game
The ball seemed to hit the railing in left and bounced back onto the field.
Anyway Pirates 1 Astros 0 , no outs in the top of the first.

Correction
Thre was one out when the homerun was hit.
It was the only hit of the inning so the homerun call versus a double call meant one run.

long FB out to the base of crawford boxes
c’mon jack, prove us all right who’ve been pulling for you this year.
2 K’s in the inning is nice.
Why am I still watching them?
It’s tough beyond comprehension, but i guess it’s fun to watch train-wrecks every once in a while (I witnessed the one in the ninth last night about 20 rows away.) We got Randy Wolf today, but I’m interested in the possibility of Wade signing Freddy Garcia. Anybody heard anything?
Pence was the right-handed Ted Williams in 2007.
cassell not fooling anyone
just gave up a hr into Ruggles (or whatever it’s called now)
that mcclouth guy is good.
3-0 Pirates

And the big "offensive powerhouse" Astros
Have averaged about 3 runs per game since the All Star break.. if that.
perfect game watch you mean
This is beyond sad. Astros needed to do something to wipe away that sour taste from last night’s collapse. And we get this, whatever it is.

do the pirates have a hit that is not an XBH?
close call as to whether that was fair or foul. haven’t seen a good replay. it’s probably one that you had to call in the air as it crossed the bag. I don’t think it bounced fair after the bag.
who are the hipster indie-rock guys sitting in the diamond seats
right behind home? guys that don’t bathe shouldn’t get those kinda seats.
Puma's made some off-target throws this series
a good throw has some chance to turn the DP there.
still good to get the out.
What a play by Pirates third baseman !!

was it weird for the 2nd baseman to be playing there on Berkman?
i realize they’re playing for the DP, but he was WAY up the middle. high hopper still made it impossible to turn it.
Lee singles through the left side
1st and 2nd w/ 2 out for miggy.
miggy is WAY overdue for a big, important hit. think Brownie said he was 3-46 w/ RISP.
Makes Chad Reineke seem like a great prospect
and with Randy Wolf saying he would like to return to the Padres in 2009, this deal is looking worse by the minute.

dePodesta is billy beane-like
in looking for players that he values diff than other GM’s.
plus, moving to petco for half your games helps a bit.
Out at 1st
nice throw by Q, definitely got him shows the replay… Ump calls him safe though..
Go 'Stros!
Q made a pickoff try on the runner at first - and he got him
but ump called him safe. he was in bad position to see lance’s tag on the runner’s hip.
lance, unfortunately, did not jump up and down, which would have been fun
Q's new helmet
As soon as Q got hit with the bat, Ausmus jumped on getting Q to use the new style of helmet
Go 'Stros!
i saw a report that said they added padding to it
not that it was completely new. i never noticed his helmet before, so i assume this one is
wow, a good defensive play from 'stros
what a surprise.
Pirate guy hits a ball to the wall, Pence gets it back in and the guy stopped before he got to 2nd. Miggy gets the ball and they run down the runner between 1st and 2nd, while the lead runner stayed putat 3rd.
2 outs, runner on 3rd.
pirates brain fart.
cassell's done
chad paronto a.k.a. Man Mountain on to pitch
between paronto, brocail, valverde, and runelvys, we’ve got a bunch of linebackers for pitchers.
he gets the final out ona fly ball.
5-0 in the middle of 5
hunter makes solid contact
but 2b fields the one hopper for the out. it’s the moral victories at this point
Carlos lee rumbles over, stabs, stumbles and comes up w/ the line drive to left
it’ll make web gems i’m sure.
2 down in the 6th.
at least this game is going faster than last night.
If it makes web gems
that will mean it’s a slow night…
Lee made it look much harder than it was ;)

Free MLB On Demand package
whatever they call it.
saw this on the brewer’s board, but Time Warner cable is doing a free preview of the mlb games.
Hurricane in the Gulf
Looks like it’s going to miss most of us, but you know how hurricane’s are.

unverified rumor: Cards prospect Colby Rasmus has torn lig in knee
http://www.stltoday.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=553424
source is supposedly Rasmus’ dad, who posts on another msg board.
we got a call on that one
mcclouth was prob safe.
guess it makes up for that missed pickoff earlier.
Hack Wilson "a station to station" baserunner at that point of his career
... that is, after he was dead.
JD & Brownie have kept me entertained tonight.
Bill Hall hits another later HR
this time in the 9th, to put the Brewers ahead of the cards 4-3 in the top of the 9th. they have to try to hold on again.
well, another stinker is just about in the books.
fitting that this game and last night’s come when the Astros make a trade “to make a run at it”.
maybe we can salvage one tomorrow. our ace is going, so we should be fine.
Luckily
I called my mother and while talking with her I missed most of this game. It ain’t pretty now in Astroland.
