From Chronicle
Neil Hohlfeld, who covered the Astros and other sports with grace and distinction during a 29-year career with the Houston Chronicle, died Saturday morning of an apparent heart attack while vacationing with his family in New Mexico. He was 56.
He covered the Astros in a variety of roles from 1979 until 1995, a stretch that spanned some of the best and worst times in franchise history.
. . .
Hohlfeld later covered Texas A&M sports and NASCAR before assuming an editing assignment at the Chronicle. In the last year, he'd returned to his first love as a baseball analyst for FSN and as a guest on local sports talk shows.

He had been a regular on the pre-game and post-game show...
coverage of the Astros games on FSN. That is shocking.
No, apparently always with the Chronicle...
Some of the more interesting quotes about Hohlfeld in the HC articles were from the Post reporter who competed with him in covering the Astros.
Roy Oswalt to DL
Runelvys Hernandez and Jack Cassel called up from Round Rock to start Monday and Tuesday.
Chris Sampson to stay in bullpen.

looks like..
it’s retroactive to his one-inning july 11th start, with a hope for him to make his july 28th start…
berkman
ok, berkman cut all his hair off… could this spark a new surge? or will this bring about a slump? or am i correlating way too much…
just tuned in and saw berkman catching a pickoff attempt
funny how diff he looks. hope it’s not a sampson effect.
Cardinals won today
after trailing 5-0 early

They got the job done.

Well, Matsui caught stealing with a 3-0 count on Lee...
that’s unfortunate, and I’m not sure I like the timing.
texas truck stop questions
i think they need to start filming a lot more of these. seems like we get the same ones all the time. i can’t even count how many times i’ve seen today’s – what other career would jr towles have if it weren’t for baseball. (he’d be a rodeo clown, of course)
When you see Tejada go the other way with a pitch like that hit...
you get the feeling that he may be getting on track.
And get on base.
Too bad Matsui was out.
And Erstad… oi.. here comes the plunge.

Astros CF slot cursed?
we had Steve Finley before he blew up and the brief interlude of Carlos Beltran. Other than that it’s a long string of potential that fizzled out (Gerald Young, Eric Yelding, Mouton)
Where's Kenny Lofton?
I said we should have gotten him earlier in the season. He always goes to the play offs. :p

maybe he's the originator of the curse?
and we could bring him home to end it. I’d go for that. it’s only Drayton’s money. Although to be fair to Erstad, he’s had a decent season.
Seeing Hunter Pence Burke to second
I wondered how Chris Burke’s year is going. Anyone know?

Too bad for him.
Good for us he’s gone.
He, Qualls and who else was in the Valverde trade?

Juan Gutierrez with an ERA over 7 at AAA Tucson...
in fairness, that is a tough ballpark for pitchers, and his FIP is much lower. But with the D-Backs plentiful farm system, I doubt he is coming to the majors this year.
How's Qualls doing this year?
I know he had a good start, but I haven’t looked lately.

Qualls is 2-7 with 16 holds per ESPN
3.89 ERA

OK. He has had some of the occasional implosions...
like he had with the Astros. But overall he is pitching well. His ERA is below 4.
Astros lead 3-0 by the way

Cubs don't play like the best team in the NL.
Maybe they started their August swoon early

i live in radio broadcast distance of Chicago and anything less than winning the WS will be viewed as a massive disappointment. That’s how over the top they are in how fantastic they view the Cubs. Fantastic hitting, starters and bullpen.
What if they lose to
the White Sox?

Should Ausmus make a strategic out here?
avoids wandy hitting and then we can decide whether to PH next inning?
0-4 but i guess he gets the RBI
And that’s good.

Sleek & aerodynamic Puma w/ an infield hit
‘stros getting it done w/ trash hits, but Zambrano deserves it
Zambrano got pulled for Chad Gaudin btw
after giving up the run. Gaudin got Lee and Tejada w/o any further damage
Zambrano pointed to the sky as he was going to the dugout, I guess blaming God for the 4 runs.
LOL
I guess if you credit him with good performances, you got to blame him when you do poorly too. :p

Let's hope that Brocail is alright.
He had been experiencing shoulder tenderness and loss of velocity. The Astros have given him a week or so off, hoping that would help. I assume he will come in the game.
got the run back
but the chance of a big inning fizzles.
Figure Sampson stays on for the 8th, or do we give brocail his first chance after the ASB?
Cubs are holding him back; trying to baby his tender arm.
I notice that the fans on Bleed Cubs Blue site were bitching that he isn’t pitching in this series.
wow, already?
that must be disappointing.
did he pitch during the AS Game? it seemed like he didn’t but I could be wrong.
Puma leaps w/ grace
and manages to come down on the bag.
(I absolutely love beating this puma thing into the ground.)
great play by Puma, but it is the type of move which can result in an injury.
I would have been pissed at Brocail if Berkman had jammed his ankle or hurt his knee on that play.
Brewers may have traded for Huston Street
according to one rumor.
http://blogs.jsonline.com/brewers/archive/2008/07/19/did-brewers-trade-ford-for-street.aspx
sorry
i only read that one post. Later posts on the blog suggest that there may be a trade going on, but it’s prob not for Street.
which I'm kinda glad about
I keep hoping one of these teams looking for a closer will overpay us for Valverde. He’s been pretty good this season, but a team as bad as we are doesn’t need to be paying for a closer. If we could get a good prospect back for him I’d do it in a heartbeat.
What other teams fans want back for players is mind-boggling. Street they were talking about Gamel and other guys. The Indians guys were talking multiple players including Gallardo or Parra. Like that drummer girl says to the VW beetle in those commercials – cuh-razy.
never heard of him
supposed to be a speed demon OF, but his batting stats aren’t great at his current level.
pence gave it a ride
on his only good swing of the night, but fukodome tracked it down. Guess Fuko is in CF b/c we started a lefty tonight?
I think more because of guys being dinged up. Ward and DeRosa is some bad defense. Pass word to the team to hit it there.
actually, maybe they just switch OF around
b/c I think Reed Johnson was out there earlier. Maybe after Ward PH, or they subbed for Zambrano. I guess I just wasn’t paying attention.
Between Justice and Ortiz
do the Chron columnists have to be so self-aggrandizing? Ortiz can’t even talk about the death of Hohlfield w/o mentioning that he was appointed so some board of the BBWAA. Surprised he hasn’t worked in an anecdote about growing up in LA and rooting for the Dodgers.
true. but he's our hot dog.
and what’s more American at a baseball game than a hot dog with mustard?
those are the kind of liners that have been going just over his glove
the past two months.
maybe he got a new shipment of B12 shots over the break.
Game Over!!!!! Astros whip up on cubbies.
Tejada jumped and caught the ball. How many times have seen Tejada do that jump and miss the ball?
ASTROS WIN 4-0
Seemed like an easy methodical win

Good luck against Dempster tomorrow

he’s played a big part in both wins this series. plus excellent pitching.
