Neil Hohlfeld of Houston Chronicle and FSN

died from a heart attack today.

From Chronicle

Neil Hohlfeld, who covered the Astros and other sports with grace and distinction during a 29-year career with the Houston Chronicle, died Saturday morning of an apparent heart attack while vacationing with his family in New Mexico. He was 56.

He covered the Astros in a variety of roles from 1979 until 1995, a stretch that spanned some of the best and worst times in franchise history.

. . .
Hohlfeld later covered Texas A&M sports and NASCAR before assuming an editing assignment at the Chronicle. In the last year, he'd returned to his first love as a baseball analyst for FSN and as a guest on local sports talk shows.

He had been a regular on the pre-game and post-game show...

coverage of the Astros games on FSN. That is shocking.

was he...

the heavier set gentleman, balding, glasses? always pretty animated?

by exit53 on Jul 19, 2008 6:23 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No, apparently always with the Chronicle...

Some of the more interesting quotes about Hohlfeld in the HC articles were from the Post reporter who competed with him in covering the Astros.

Roy Oswalt to DL

Runelvys Hernandez and Jack Cassel called up from Round Rock to start Monday and Tuesday.

Chris Sampson to stay in bullpen.

crap

i had a strong feeling this was coming… but hopefully he can get everything sorted out rather than continue to make shortened starts and deal with pain.

by exit53 on Jul 19, 2008 6:09 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

looks like..

it’s retroactive to his one-inning july 11th start, with a hope for him to make his july 28th start…

berkman

ok, berkman cut all his hair off… could this spark a new surge? or will this bring about a slump? or am i correlating way too much…

by exit53 on Jul 19, 2008 6:08 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

just tuned in and saw berkman catching a pickoff attempt

funny how diff he looks. hope it’s not a sampson effect.

Well, Matsui caught stealing with a 3-0 count on Lee...

that’s unfortunate, and I’m not sure I like the timing.

by clack on Jul 19, 2008 6:25 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

texas truck stop questions

i think they need to start filming a lot more of these. seems like we get the same ones all the time. i can’t even count how many times i’ve seen today’s – what other career would jr towles have if it weren’t for baseball. (he’d be a rodeo clown, of course)

Pence RBI

crappy ground out, but at least it’s a run.

by entropic soul on Jul 19, 2008 6:39 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And get on base.

Too bad Matsui was out.
And Erstad… oi.. here comes the plunge.

Astros CF slot cursed?

we had Steve Finley before he blew up and the brief interlude of Carlos Beltran. Other than that it’s a long string of potential that fizzled out (Gerald Young, Eric Yelding, Mouton)

Where's Kenny Lofton?

I said we should have gotten him earlier in the season. He always goes to the play offs. :p

by entropic soul on Jul 19, 2008 7:19 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

maybe he's the originator of the curse?

and we could bring him home to end it. I’d go for that. it’s only Drayton’s money. Although to be fair to Erstad, he’s had a decent season.

I wondered how Chris Burke’s year is going. Anyone know?

Too bad for him.

Good for us he’s gone.
He, Qualls and who else was in the Valverde trade?

Juan Gutierrez with an ERA over 7 at AAA Tucson...

in fairness, that is a tough ballpark for pitchers, and his FIP is much lower. But with the D-Backs plentiful farm system, I doubt he is coming to the majors this year.

by clack on Jul 19, 2008 7:14 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

a AA pitcher?

Gonzalez? can’t remember for sure

by lnewcomer on Jul 19, 2008 7:11 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

sigh

Erstad.
0-3 with two Strike Outs and a Ground out and he’s batted with runners on each time.

Cubs don't play like the best team in the NL.

Maybe they started their August swoon early

i live in radio broadcast distance of Chicago and anything less than winning the WS will be viewed as a massive disappointment. That’s how over the top they are in how fantastic they view the Cubs. Fantastic hitting, starters and bullpen.

by ol Pete on Jul 19, 2008 7:30 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

it's not THAT unrealistic this year

at times, they’ve been the best team in the NL this year.

by lnewcomer on Jul 19, 2008 7:31 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Lotsa hate between those two groups of fans. Lots of arrests without a doubt.

Wandy rolling

Can he keep it goign thru the 7th? He’s had probs going late.

by lnewcomer on Jul 19, 2008 7:35 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Should Ausmus make a strategic out here?

avoids wandy hitting and then we can decide whether to PH next inning?

by lnewcomer on Jul 19, 2008 7:38 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

CF got fooled a little bit

took a bad route to the ball, but made up for it.

by lnewcomer on Jul 19, 2008 7:39 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That’s crazy. The good part of it is that he goes elsewhere and takes that giant swing.

by ol Pete on Jul 19, 2008 7:47 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Erstad gets his fourth chance

With runners on tonight. Let’s see if he can turn it around.

Sleek & aerodynamic Puma w/ an infield hit

‘stros getting it done w/ trash hits, but Zambrano deserves it

by lnewcomer on Jul 19, 2008 7:59 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Is he pacing around and wiping his forehead repeatedly?

by ol Pete on Jul 19, 2008 8:00 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Sorry, my brain was stuck on Zambrano. I didn’t mean Puma – the new sleek Puma.

by ol Pete on Jul 19, 2008 8:03 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Zambrano got pulled for Chad Gaudin btw

after giving up the run. Gaudin got Lee and Tejada w/o any further damage

Zambrano pointed to the sky as he was going to the dugout, I guess blaming God for the 4 runs.

by lnewcomer on Jul 19, 2008 8:05 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

LOL

I guess if you credit him with good performances, you got to blame him when you do poorly too. :p

by entropic soul on Jul 19, 2008 8:09 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Let's hope that Brocail is alright.

He had been experiencing shoulder tenderness and loss of velocity. The Astros have given him a week or so off, hoping that would help. I assume he will come in the game.

by clack on Jul 19, 2008 8:05 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

FB @ 94

on the 2-1 pitch to Lee just then

by lnewcomer on Jul 19, 2008 8:07 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

got the run back

but the chance of a big inning fizzles.

Figure Sampson stays on for the 8th, or do we give brocail his first chance after the ASB?

by lnewcomer on Jul 19, 2008 8:05 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Harden tomorrow?

he pitched last Sunday I think, so is tomorrow his day?

by lnewcomer on Jul 19, 2008 8:06 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Cubs are holding him back; trying to baby his tender arm.

I notice that the fans on Bleed Cubs Blue site were bitching that he isn’t pitching in this series.

by clack on Jul 19, 2008 8:07 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

wow, already?

that must be disappointing.

did he pitch during the AS Game? it seemed like he didn’t but I could be wrong.

by lnewcomer on Jul 19, 2008 8:09 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Puma leaps w/ grace

and manages to come down on the bag.

(I absolutely love beating this puma thing into the ground.)

by lnewcomer on Jul 19, 2008 8:08 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

great play by Puma, but it is the type of move which can result in an injury.

I would have been pissed at Brocail if Berkman had jammed his ankle or hurt his knee on that play.

by clack on Jul 19, 2008 8:10 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

sorry

i only read that one post. Later posts on the blog suggest that there may be a trade going on, but it’s prob not for Street.

by lnewcomer on Jul 19, 2008 8:12 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

which I'm kinda glad about

I keep hoping one of these teams looking for a closer will overpay us for Valverde. He’s been pretty good this season, but a team as bad as we are doesn’t need to be paying for a closer. If we could get a good prospect back for him I’d do it in a heartbeat.

by lnewcomer on Jul 19, 2008 8:14 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

What other teams fans want back for players is mind-boggling. Street they were talking about Gamel and other guys. The Indians guys were talking multiple players including Gallardo or Parra. Like that drummer girl says to the VW beetle in those commercials – cuh-razy.

by ol Pete on Jul 19, 2008 8:16 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Latest is a Giants reliever.

by ol Pete on Jul 19, 2008 8:12 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Some super speedster with a mediocre batting average in A ball maybe?

by ol Pete on Jul 19, 2008 8:14 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

never heard of him

supposed to be a speed demon OF, but his batting stats aren’t great at his current level.

by lnewcomer on Jul 19, 2008 8:14 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

pence gave it a ride

on his only good swing of the night, but fukodome tracked it down. Guess Fuko is in CF b/c we started a lefty tonight?

by lnewcomer on Jul 19, 2008 8:16 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think more because of guys being dinged up. Ward and DeRosa is some bad defense. Pass word to the team to hit it there.

by ol Pete on Jul 19, 2008 8:18 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

actually, maybe they just switch OF around

b/c I think Reed Johnson was out there earlier. Maybe after Ward PH, or they subbed for Zambrano. I guess I just wasn’t paying attention.

by lnewcomer on Jul 19, 2008 8:19 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Between Justice and Ortiz

do the Chron columnists have to be so self-aggrandizing? Ortiz can’t even talk about the death of Hohlfield w/o mentioning that he was appointed so some board of the BBWAA. Surprised he hasn’t worked in an anecdote about growing up in LA and rooting for the Dodgers.

by lnewcomer on Jul 19, 2008 8:19 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ortiz on the board of BBWA? LOL.

And Rob Neyer gets rejected for BBWA membership. what’s that say?

by clack on Jul 19, 2008 8:21 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

They beat Cubs with Lilly and Zambrano starting

They can win with Dempster starting.

depends on whether Tejada continues his little resurgence

he’s played a big part in both wins this series. plus excellent pitching.

Backe v. Dempster tomorrow?
